Kayak Fishing for Deep Sea Monsters -- New Zealand Ep 9

In this episode, we're leaving the cove at Arid Island and heading far offshore to a deep underwater mountain to see what we can drum up from the deep. We'll be kayak fishing in the middle of the ocean, and the bite is on FIRE! We also enjoy some incredible wildlife encounters including hammerheads, mako sharks and giant manta rays. COMMENT BELOW and tell me how you'd feel about having those sharks around while kayaking! Robert Field Not at all, I saw the barracuda 3 hours earlier while swimming and decided to get out immediately! I went to play beach volley ball and got sandy, so I decided to clean off. When I was getting out it bit my finger and severed a tendon. I had to get emergency surgery and I had 6 months of physical therapy. Another surgery was included for movement because I couldn’t straighten or bend my finger correctly. The bite was on Christmas Eve last as well. I’m 13 now and it was one of the most terrifying things I’ve experienced.

Weirdly arrogant attitude on the fish names. It's as if you think the american names are more official or an average American fisherman would know the phylogeny of their species in relation to fish on the other side of the world. There isn't any real reason for the common names of fish beyond it just being what people happen call them. Snapper in New Zealand are Pagrus auratus, not part of what is usually known as the snapper family but it looks similar. Hapuka are a wreckfish, not the same family as your Grouper.

In South Africa we call that 1st fish you caught a snoek, its not a barracuda, completely different fish and it tastes awesome if you bbq it with apricot jam and butter. Do not over cook it otherwise it is very very dry and unedible. Normally it is butterflied and cooked skinside to the fire and constantly basted with the jam and apricot jam (melted) just before it is ready you flip it to do the meat side. Try it you will never use them for bait again.

All the times I've been fishing in nz I've never seen a 'proper' shark dont go out really deep though I do but dont wanna see one cause one of my biggest fears is seeing a shark swimming up towards me while I'm in the water. I've heard stories about a great white swimming around my pops canoe and I would have a major panic attack if it came near me.

Aloha Robert. I've seem two fish caught on one lure but never one fish caught on two lures, pretty amazing. Funny how different Kiwis and Aussies name their fish. What they call a barracuda, snapper, jacks, are quite different from what we in US waters are used to.
On Maui a few years back a kayak fisherman got his foot bit off by a shark, and he bled out. The USCG found him adrift still on his kayak. I have had-tiger sharks close to 17 feet cruise right by my canoe right at the surface, and give me the "stink eye". They are known to give exploratory bites like a baby or a puppy except when a tiger-shark give a love bite it can be lethal. A friend had a tiger give his kayak a exploratory bite that punctured his hull. It was not an aggressive bite or my friend would have stood no chance. Fortunately the holes were small so he made it back into shore before his SOT kayak swamped. Don't dangle in sharky waters.
Those "Hamachi" look delicious.
Looks like fun was had by all. Mahalo for sharing.

When releasing the fish back you should always try to revive it by just simply putting its body in the water and moving it’s tail till it’s ready to take off
Robert Field
Robert Field - 5 years ago
That’s actually not a very effective way to revive a fish. You want to propel it forward through the water with its mouth open. But some fish just don’t recover well when brought up from down deep.

Hey Rob. Love your vids. Always fun to watch. If possible and I know you were given a couple of rods to fish with where one broke but the very one you used after that, the light one or thin one the didn't break. Can you remember which one was that exactly? That rod held up nicely and I'd like to look more into it. If not, can you recommend one that can hold up a huge load without snapping thats that light/thin? Fishing for just 5 years so still learning and experimenting. Thanks Rob. Marc.

Owen Gray
Owen Gray - 5 years ago
Might be worth not highsticking your rods so much- when ya lift them above about a 45-50 degree angle while fighting fish you lose most of your lifting power and hugely increase the chance of it snapping. Good work on the kingies though- good fun in the kayaks!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 5 years ago
Yeah I know. That rod is awful for kayak fishing, short rod with a long butt. Super awkward. Was glad it broke
Owen Gray
Owen Gray - 5 years ago
+Lachlan O'Neil It's definitely a bit trickier on the yak but it's possible- just need to work on the technique a bit. Fibreglass rods are 100% bulletproof though and allow for slip-ups hahaha
Lachlan O'Neil
Lachlan O'Neil - 5 years ago
I don't think you can do that in a kayak but he should probably just get one of the unbreakable fibreglass rods for this.
