Wheres your baro trauma device? Most of the fish with the bug eyes and stomachs pooched out will not survive. And Cdf says not to puncture the stomachs as it will lead to infection and death!

How does that Old Town pedal compared to pushing a pedal on a Hobie? Seems Hobie might be more efficient. Wonder if you could share what the swing mount is for your camera? Nice video!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Chuck Peacock I think it comes down to personal preference, they feel totally different. Hobie's might be a little more efficient, but reverse is more efficient on the Old Town. Everything's a trade off. The boom is a Railblaza Camera Boom 600 and I did a full review of it on my channel under Product reviews. You can use code field1720 to get a discount on it at yak-gear.com

Hey Robert, I'm about to make my first venture into the same area. What clothing do you recommend and what are you using?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Black Label Corals I mostly wear stuff from NRS on the water. In this vid I'm wearing their Sidewinder Bibs, Velocity boots and lightweight jacket. May be warm enough to wear less though. I'd just check the weather and dress appropriately. If it's going to be chilly air temps, always be prepared for the possibility of flipping. If you get wet, will you be at risk of hypothermia? If so, pop a spare change of clothes in a dry bag inside your hatch, just in case.

You mentioned eating the lingcod as ceviche. Be sure to wait longer than usual to allow the lime juice to kill any parasites. Unfortunately lingcod often have worms in the fillets.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
You're the 2nd person to tell me that. We did the ceviche with the rockfish and fish and chips with the lingcod. That VLOG episode is up on my channel, too.

Edward Dergosits - 6 years ago
Great video. When fishing for rockfish that you intend to release it is good to use a decender device rather than puncture the swim bladder. Here is a link to a very simple and inexpensive device . You will feel good knowing the fish get pressurized without damage to the swim bladder. http://www.sheltonproducts.com/SFD.html

When Sea Lions are jumping out of the water like that (@ 11:47) it's known as "porpoising," and they'll sometimes do that when they are entering an area where the bottom drops out and GWSs ambush them from below. The porpoising action is a defense strategy thought to make it more difficult for a GWS to draw a bead on a single pinniped. I'm not saying that's definitely what's going on there, but it's good to keep your head on a swivel for those types of signs.

He's right, you dont have to worry about the GWS you see. It's the one that hits you from below with enough force to throw you and the yak 10 feet into the air. Not a lot of bumps in Morro Bay. Come fish Beans Hollow, you're almost guaranteed to see a GWS.

After you knock them on the head do you bleed them and put them on ice?
Kevin Johnson
Kevin Johnson - 6 years ago
Absolutely. I was going to say that I don't use stringers when in the ocean for that very reason. Especially this year being a very great white year in SoCal. But I was curious. Thanks.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Kevin Johnson I didnt bleed it but I put it on ice. Bleeding a fish is never a bad idea, but more important on some species than others. Being in the middle of great white country, pouring fish blood into the water around me didn't seem worth it
erik s
erik s - 6 years ago
You need to bring a descender device when rockfishing. It is a aw here in Oregon to have one on board if fishing for rock cod. It is about a 2 dollar inverted hook that goes on a big weight and you just put it on a old rod and you drop the fish to the depths and it releases pressure. Putting holes in the fishes air bladder most likely just kills them....
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+erik s good information Erik, thanks. I wasn't rockfishing intentionally, and that's not a law in California, but I'm all about treating the fish as well as possible. I'll remember that for next time.

Hey Robert field I don't know if you'll read this but you need to come to the east coast Virginia, I catch these fish call taug tog or also called black fish. Really hard fighting fish you catch them around rock piles or the Chesapeake bay bridge on bottom rigs. They are really prized fish to catch around here and very delicious and tasty. I catch a lot of them in my kayak!

In the winter when the big lings move off the deeper reefs and onto the shallower reefs to spawn the boats fish sand dabs for bait using multi hook ganions over Sandy bottoms.I have reeled in 11" olive rockfish to the surface only to have it being held crosswise in a 12# lingcod's mouth like a dog with a bone. Curious as to how you liked this yak compared to the mirage system?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Gary Myers ummm I think it's personal preference. Some like the bicycle motion and some like the stair stepper motion. The propellor style has easier reverse. I think the fin style is a little more efficient. Both work well

Hey man you're fishing in my home turf! Sadly I'm missing the ling action this year due to me being in college all the way out in Texas. A little tip, lingcod fish tacos are probably the best way to cook them up. Blue rockfish are pretty dang good too. Best of luck out there man

Paddle Tales

Danielle garcia last year a man on a kayak was attacked by a great white. He was with his buddies so he was ok, but if it wasn't for them he be gone. Those great whites travel up and down the west coast, if you go down to L.A. area there's over 5000 sharks just in that area alone, different species. I will never go into the Pacific with a kayak, especially since we also have earthquakes very frequently.
Danielle garcia

Michael Nicolaysen
Michael Nicolaysen - 6 years ago
Fair enough. Got a jackson cuda atm. But in the next year I'd like to add a pedal drive for offshore as the main purpose.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Michael Nicolaysen it's really nice man! The boat is really well designed and built. The drive is a personal preference in terms of propellor style vs fin style
