This project was originally on Facebook and went viral with 1,000,000 views and 9000 shares. The people on Facebook dubbed this project a “water go-kart” and “kayak go-kart”. It is just a name likely derived from the steering wheel, motor, and compact size. You can call it whatever you wish. I agree it would be a cool kit to make. Checking into it.

Here is a possible upgrade option you could work on adding in...... Try mounting a small Solar battery maintainer/charger to the top front of the kayak for added longevity to the battery. Let you rip around the lake all day!

Love it very awesome. I wonder how much time you would get out of the battery? And would it help to add a 12-volt solar panel maybe with Velcro strips just in front of the operator/driver of the kayak? Or add a small alternator on the side out the back with a water wheel to help it spin while in forward motion? Either way there could be a marketing potential for this idea and he should apply for a patent and find a big company that might be interested in selling kits for this idea asap. Thanks for the video and good luck........

Now you are thinking! I’ve been brainstorming those ideas for months trying out things. Especially with my Hobie TI where I could run two solar panels across trampolines. I think alternator idea would best work for a shack near a river. I’m not sure that an alternator could work with the kayak due to high drag.

Nick Nuzzi not at all. I offered means for it to benefit Brett significantly. I edited the video he provided the raw footage. It is still a mutually beneficial collaboration should he want to take advantage of the opportunities I offered. YouTube channels collaborate all the time. Some Instagram accounts are entirely curated content. I just like showing off things others have done because the channel I feel is bigger than just me. The elevator trailer video was another collab I did.

Mounting an out board motor to a kayak makes it a go cart? You have a hillbilly boat.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
When the post went viral on Facebook that is what it got dubbed. They started calling it a kayak go-kart and a water go-kart. I think due to the similar size and steering wheel. If it didn’t have a steering wheel I likely would have just titled it as no-drill motorized kayak. Instead I chose to go with what viewers on FB were calling it.

How do they get around needing a registration being as it has a motor. I live in fl.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
In Florida I believe you need the manufacturer’s certificate of origin to register it. That can usually be acquired by contacting the kayak manufacturer or dealer and giving hull number.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Private pond/lake would bypass need for registering. Also some areas allow certain size motors without registration. We have viewers all over the world. Australian viewers were mentioning that 30lb thrust in many areas didn’t require registration.

Now you need a US coast guard pfd , throwable , horn , flares , fire extinguisher , and registration every 4 years ! Sweet job though for thinking and doing at the same time . A simpler version is to mount the motor next to you on a bracket that crosses the cockpit area . It doesn't matter that the motor is on the side it will still handle nicely . And you have full control of speed and direction directly at the tiller .

I put a car battery in the cooler and used the normal trolling foot control holding it in the opposite hand ad the motor. I steered the motor next to me. It didnt work perfectly as it was on the side but later i ended up putting another kayak on the opposite side so the motor was between the 2 for my and a special lady. KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Richie Rich some pricey trolling motors have PWM which will greatly improve battery life (5-10x). You can add a PWM to any trolling motor even to motors like this one which costs only $95! See the link in video description for motor. It is the best priced motor.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Richie Rich depends entirely on the battery size used. Charging speed depends on battery amp capacity and your charger amp speed. All chargers have a different amp rate. All batteries have different amp capacity.

Water and open electric parts ? Not sure how i feel about that lol
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
gatojj trolling motors were made for water. 12V won’t kill you from getting wet. It isn’t going to deliver enough amps and volts. I know because I work as a Vascular Access Nurse and also worked ER. I have the training for shocking people and have started and stopped ♥️. I also have had 12v batteries get soaked. Now household electric in water is big no no....! People die in marinas often from extension cords dragging in water. They don’t die from electrocution as much as drowning due to loss of muscle control.

Yes depending on where you live and use it you may need to register the motorized kayak.

Thanks. Can’t take credit for the creativity. I only edited the video. We agree though....pretty darn sweet. It really did inspire us to see such creativity. Thus, we had to share with viewers.

You can do it there are a ton of engines you can use just have to look around how much does the electric components weigh now
KayakDIY

Haha. Yeah a 2.5hp will only weigh about 29lbs. Definitely doable.

This guy is a freaking genius and the simplicity of it...why haven't I thought of that u know if he cleaned up the design a little bit and was able to make a handful of these a week I would guarantee he would sell everything he made and probably more keep on keepin on dude u r gonna make it far in life with skills like that

I think this would just be called a electric powered kayak, not a kayak go-kart. Saying go cart had me thinking that it had wheels and could drive straight from land to water.

KayakDIY: Just made the comment due to not seeing one. Everyone has their own threshhold of safety. Granted, a type I or type II is a better selection, depending on the activity, and a type III is a whole lot better than a type "none". Just my personal preference, and once again, everyone has their own threshhold/perception of safety. I safely managed to complete a 21 yr career in the Navy, with a few yrs of that spent at sea, and would personally find it embarrasing to myself if I drowned while out kayaking. ;)

Do you need to register a electric bike? Don't think so.
So why a trolling motor? Falls in the same category!
That's why pedaling and rowing will do for me. Thanks

gotnokittys - 6 years ago
Steve Lyk Only human powered are exempt here in Az. Even a 4 person/4 oars rowing boat is included.
But once you register you must keep it up.

Maryland only requires you to register your kayak if it is any way “motorized”...
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Yeah it is totally crazy. I still don’t always do it. Depends where I use the craft. We grew up going to private ponds and lakes which weren’t controlled by state. Also when testing a motor mod I don’t always register. I just test in low traffic areas or private ponds. When I want to go on more public waterways then I register. That is how I do things and I totally accept the risk of being ticketed.

I lived in Oregon and actually got a ticket because i had an inflatable boat with a trolling motor on it. trying to get that boat registered was exhausting! Boat places thought i was nuts. however Oregon law is written so that if you have anything floating (tube, raft, log,) if it has a motor of any kind it has to be registered. crazy!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Our Australian viewers said this wouldn’t need registration by them due to motor size. Here in US most states would require registration. I see tons of guys in Florida using trolling motors without registration. Doesn’t seem to locally be enforced much. I personally think it is a dumb law. I hate government over regulation. Some states even require registering non-motorized kayaks. The registration money seems to rarely benefit kayakers.

Very cool. I had thought about putting a trolling motor on my kayak but I dont want to have to go through the hassle of registering it and paying for it.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Yeah but registration in most states is cheap and to me worth the money. Some states it is really easy to register and others a bit more difficult. I see tons of unregistered motor kayaks in Florida. Some choose to risk it. Our friends in Australia said they don’t if the motor is 30lb thrust.

I don't know what to say except that's wicked awesome!

I'd run to Wal-Mart and buy one of those kayaks just to build one, because I have most of that stuff laying around here, as I'm sure most of us do. The only thing stopping me is it has to be registered and here we also have to pay "personal property tax" on top of that. That stinks!

The state gets enough of my money already!!!
james ellis
james ellis - 6 years ago
same here in WV,if kayak or rowboat is human powered no registration or personal property tax.The minute you put a trolling motor on it you pay and register.ABS system that pimps the public while kissing the coal companies ass.

My state squeezes every penny they can out of us to pad politicians pockets. I wouldn't feel so bad if they put that money into roads or schools or something useful, but they don't. The roads are so bad here you can't even hold a cup of coffee in your hand while driving...unless you want to wear it! Then, to make matters worse they just announced a few days ago that the govt. won't be funding the roads any more and we might be going back to gravel. (So much for rebuilding the infrastructure!) Probably 1/3 of the schools have closed in the state and consolidated with others and they are always begging for money. So where does all that personal property tax, vehicle inspection and licensing money go? Toward some politicians summer villa! So I make it a point to avoid registering anything I don't have to.

I think any state regulates, simply to keep the cash flow going, because looking around here I can't see one good use of any of that money unless they are paying $1,600 for fountain pens too!

This project is awesome and I think we need to see stuff like this once in a while to push our creativity to the next level! That's what DIY is all about!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
Wow! Your state really socks it to you. Honestly, I don’t register some of mine unless I’m going on major public waters with powerboats. However, I assume the risk. I think the states over-regulate. I know lots of private ponds/lakes. I saw this project via FB and it totally inspired me to maybe push the envelope of DIY a bit further.

That is an awesome law! This one uses a 30lb thrust motor (link in video description). Here in U.S many states like to suck as much registration money out of people as they can without offering any benefit in return.

Instead of non-fuel exemption i would rather see a hp or thrust one.
Mainly because you can build some very high powered electric outboard motors.
IMO any thing 55# and under should be exempt.
Larry Talbot
Larry Talbot - 6 years ago
There should be a non-fuel powered exemption. I mean to register a trolling motor? Its ridiculous! How far do they think we can go with the best of them?!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago

True..most states require hull numbers. I wouldn't have registered it in Iowa...then again I would have been on several private lakes/ponds. I only register my motorized kayaks that I use on big water shared by boats.
