Kayak Hole Repair!

In this video I show you how to plastic weld a 3/4 inch long hole in a kayak. I test it by beating it with a ball peen hammer and it doesn't fail! Bottom line is, if you put a hole in your kayak you can fix it. Also, if you can buy a deeply discounted kayak because it has a hole in it, don't be afraid to buy it. The day after the video we spent 4 hours out on the water in our new Kayak, and had a great time!

I'm not sure the grade of the thicker plastic clothes hangers, but curious if you could cut them and straighten them out, instant welding rod?

Cut a piece of material out of a plastic bucket is large enough to cover the hole, then plastic weld the edge all the way around and you've covered your hole.

A heat gun to heat the surface, a 2 or 3 inch screw threaded into the original hole to pull the dent (heat applied) then use the same technique as shown finish quick and easy. Great presentation.

Another thing, when you work on a large area, use a block of wood with a wheel barrow inner tube under it that way you can inflate the tube to get a bit of support from underneath. Warning fumes produced while melting plastic are hazardous so work out doors and use respirators.

That's a great idea, it would work as well as filling the dent while using less repair material.

I would have poured boiling water or applied a heat gun to reshape the area before the weld. great vid.

It might. I wonder how durable it might be since it was made for waders and such. I'd hate to hit a rock and tear the repair off.

I built a kayak when I was a scout, many years ago, I'm 67 now, an old fart... The Kayak was a wood frame with canvas stretched over the frame...Patches would only take 20 minute or so. Cut some canvas, we carried a small jar of rubber cement, coat the canvas/ slap on hole and weight about 20mins.... I ran the Green River, Colorado River, spent 3 wks in the primitive area on the Southeast arm of Yellowstone Lake. We had wonderful times.... Later, I bought a kayak made from the same material as your and it had a remote control electric trolling motor in it, I would put a deep cycle battery in it, my wife and I could go all day and never run out of a charge... I kept it for years, even after we bought a 27' cabin cruiser that we kept on Lake Powell in the 70,80,90's 4 days each month on the boat, what a ball....

Welding is the only way, good job. People try gluing and epoxy but due to the wax in plastics it will not stay. Your weld is the way.

I've used a very similar technique to modify saiga magazines. I recommend cleaning the whole area with alcohol, using the flat glass leading tip, and preheating the whole area with a heatgun or torch first. Use the low heat setting on the soldering iron and massage the area thorougly so that you get full bond without scorching.

That was a really skillful repair. Looks great. All manner of things are made of HDPE, milk jugs and laundry soap containers etc.. Your house will be full of such containers. Keep on keeping on.

I'm going to be inspired by watching you to finally fix a bumper cover that has been needing to be fixed. It's a different plastic, but some fiberflex ought to do the job. Good repair on your kayak! I've watched lots of your videos and appreciate your help--I've learned a lot from you. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could you sand down the repair with 200 or 400 grit to get a smoother finish afterwards? I suspect you could repair, sand, touch-up repair, then a final fine sand to get a really good smooth finish. With correct color you would probably have a hard time finding the repair.

GunFun ZS - 7 years ago
Yes. I use a course sharp file first, then sand at ~200 with water to keep from clogging the paper.

Most white milk jugs should be HDPE , also plastic bottle caps ;) These could give you some color choices. :D

Good work with the repair! Got scared when you pulled out the hammer. lol
