There's no skeg on that kayak? I've never tried a yak with one, so I typically wind up sideways like you did. When I saw you get abeam the wave I thought, shit, he's gunna get dumped and wind up in the water with an excited shark. What do you reckon it was? Bull or a Hammerhead?

FUUUUUUCK THAT SHIT, I'll drop the Fuck Bombs then...dont like it...then dont read it! My kayak would need a pressure washing after that to git the shit out of it...I was almost attacked and murdered by a gang of squirrels once....I will never go to that part of town again after dark(ok...it was only 2 squirrels,but they had weapons and looked very pissed off....but sharks...no fuckin way)

I surf in matanzas inlet almost every day and I've had plenty memerable shark encounters as long al you stay calm you'll be fine

It is kind of sad how our media sensationalizes stuff...let that be a lesson to all. Thought the pics were cool and that others could learn from my lack of preparedness. Amen to beautiful and scary. After 21 years in the Coast Guard I've seen both om many occasions. Surf Safe!

The link I clicked through on AllTop that led to your video was titled something like, "Florida Kayaker's Terrifying Shark Encounter." As you know, if you spend any amount of time in the ocean you're bound to see some beautiful and scary things. Perhaps I am mistaking the splash from your paddle or the shifting of your boat in the water for a bit of bait. I think the shark did as well. Thanks for sharing your experience at this great spot with us.

Must agree the bravado is funny. I never used the words large, scary, aggressive or repeatedly attacked to describe the event. It was an interesting encounter and watching the evolution since the video was posted has been just as interesting. Nonetheless I think the images are nice and I'll always look at the paddle and smile. It's not as nerve wracking as having an orca, bull sea lion or a humpback surface nearby. I find your comment about the fish interesting...no matter how much I look I don't see the fish scatter when it breaches. Thanks for bringing some reality to the discussion!

I surf there a lot as well. It's my low tide spot. I find the comments here a tad overblown. You can see the fish scatter when the shark breaches. This guy happened to be in the same place as a pod of bait the shark was feeding on. There's been a ton of fish in the water over the last couple weeks from the pier to Matanzas.
