KayakFishingTales Yeah thats how ive found it. Easy to get tangled and waste time fumbling with it between a set when you need to be paddling and building up speed.

Yes in the surf zone it can cause you to get tangled. Fine to use once outside

I made the same exact mistakes ...on my first ocean kayak launch...bruised shins, broken kayak fishing rod holder, snapped rod, swallowed surf water, disorientated, was happy to get the heck out of the surf in one piece....overturned kayak floating in the surf with rip currents....after 10 minutes I tried again....the sad thing is the exact same thing happened the second attempt....I felt totally defeated....some of those waves are simply not launchable on a rough swell day. I had to pull that water logged yak 1/4 mile along shore to a rocky area with less waves until I finally launched out....then bad news number 3....the swell caused me to get seasick and I had to quickly turn back to shore....Next day...I launched from a safer area...only to get seasick from the 4 foot swell....and that is when I started vomiting..right onto the pdf and right into the yak....I thought to myself....the ocean doesn't give anything predictable and easy...now I pay attention to the swell reports and simply will not go out on any day with swell greater than 1 meter...and winds greater than 5 knots....learned the hard way...I know exactly how this man feels

Thats some funny chit right there. Also sad too. I made a mistake the first launch by not paying attention, and a small wave took the kayak and bashed my shins. The thing that really struck me dumbfounded was the no PFD though. He coulda drowned out there if his rib punctured his lung(s) swimming.
