Why near death? He did not get pinned and the kayak impact was not strong enough to knock him out. Just a swim over a waterfall that happens often in kayaking

Only a complete beginner would lean upstream, so the water builds up over the deck and flips him. He needs to stay with class-II streams.

A Kayak full of water fell on top of him. Could've broken bones or given a traumatic brain injury. Either way, had his ability to swim been hindered he could have drowned in the following rapids regardless of their grade.

I thought the Boat hung longer before it fell
so the Boat could've hurt him but it would likely have only busted his nose or teeth

that pourover of the waterfall is no more than 1ft, so with my experience i say he hit atleast 5 rocks with a class 4-5 swiim

there wasn't a thing near death about that, considering when he flipped what happened was virtually the best possible outcome. getting pinned at the top in the shallows, which easily could've happened would have been truly life threatening

There's generally a pocket of water inside of your kayak after you wet exit. It didn't really get a chance to "fill" with water, and also float bags.

Can anyone explain to me how he lost his paddle? It looked like he was unused to bracing/anything.

Yes, there was. A flipping kayak full of water fell on top of him. Could have broken bones, or given a traumatic brain injury, either of which could have killed him in the oncoming rapids.

Looks quite painful. Kayaking remains quite dangerous if you're unlucky and/or react wrong. I hope that he has survived.
He already lost patience when he stopped at the stone. Then he let his boat lean on the wrong side. I'm quite confused why he wasn't able to do the roll. His comerade didn't even react a bit. It doesn't look really professional and thoughtful. I usually take my short playboat but at this stony fall even I would have take my best Creeker and not a riverrunner.
