I tried this a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be much less difficult than I thought. I actually think climbing back in on my own is easier than getting another paddlers assistance. I recommend that you try this out and do have a paddle float ready at all times on your deck. Also quite interesting, the kayak stays quite stable once you put one leg into it and then you can get all things ready (blow up the float etc.) without loosing a kayak or a paddle. :) Elegant, really.

I just started kayaking two months ago and have only done so in calm rivers and beach coasts. I have hardly considered the prospect of falling out. I am definitely going to learn reentry now before kayaking in rough water.

Personally i think if you are dressed that lightly for the water conditions you are making a big mistake. Yes I have a foam float I use in the winter but I always am dressed for immersion for an extended stay. This is your life you are dealing with.

Mike, I have taken one of your classes before I think they are a great value for what they cost and I plan on taking a few more. You and I have talked video stuff in the past and I have got to say that the audio on this video was spot on, a difficult task considering the envirnment you are in. Great job on the video and demonstration.

Another voice of experience: practice these techniques in rough water. Better yet, practice after paddling for a few hours when you are exhausted. Also, pumping the water out of your boat in rough seas may not be a realistic option, since you are likely to get flipped while you screw around without a paddle in hand. So practice paddling a boat full of water back to shore. A side benefit of paddling a boat full of water is that you will get plenty of practice doing re-entries!
