Kayak Bass Fishing the Colorado River

Another adventure in the Hobie kayaks with me and Craig. We head to the Colorado river just outside of Austin, TX to see if we can find some good river spotted bass. With a big rain the night before, creating lots of current and muddy water, it was tough to fish and even harder to get paddle against the river. With such a long trip, about 16 miles, we had to get it in gear and paddle our way down the river for many hours just to make sure we got off the water in time. We managed to catch 4 bass, enjoy a good work out with good scenery, and have an adventure to remember for sure! SUBSCRIBE if you like watching! You do know that Hydrilla is an invasive species right? It's not native to the lower colorado river. Meaning its a bad thing that It has it in the river.

Crazy seeing a video of you literally in my backyard. I grew up there and my mother still lives just outside the park gates. I spent many days at that boat ramp. Little webberville park to big webberville park might have been a better option. 3 to 4 hours depending on current.

This reminds me of some local adventures I've been on. Sometimes you get skunked, but that has never stopped me. I enjoy seeing you get off the lakes and into the skinny water I'm used to here in central MA. I use a retractable motor on my kayak to go from point A to B. Saves the legs and arms and doesn't get hung up. Keep the adventures coming!

That first bass looked like it might have been a hybrid between a guad and a smallmouth. If it was a true guad, then it was a hell of a fish lol

You need to redeem yourself on the Colorado. 16 miles is too long of a stretch to do in one day, you'll spend most of your time paddling instead of fishing. During the summer months you can do the 9 mile stretch by launching off of 71 and 183, then pulling out right off of 973 and 71 near the airport. This is a common 12 hour Saturday trip for us local guys since you drift along with minimum paddling and still have time for an hour lunch break/swim. My favorite spot on the Colorado is actually between 973 and Toll road 130, it's about a 1/2 mile stretch but you have open deep water for cranking or throwing out flukes. It's also filled with thick hydrilla in some spots for those top water frogs. Hit up some local guys for more info next time, most of us would be happy to help.

+Parth Venkat yea and to be honest, I'm not sure the impact the flood and flow will have on fishing. I imagine it cleaned out all the grass. I will say this, make sure you do pack some kind of top water lure, those guads are aggressive and sure to hit it.
Parth Venkat
Parth Venkat - 7 years ago
Thanks but i'm seeing the same thing. They've lowered it a lot (from 24k to 7k) which is the top of "safe" as far as american whitewater is concerned but that still seems high for us. I'm also in a raft which is more stable but also not as well locked in. Smart advice on the PFD if we do do it (will have to be legal and lower).
Ellopez05
Ellopez05 - 7 years ago
+Parth Venkat in not sure it's been cleared for the public. You might to check that first. LBL opened up at noon today but I haven't heard anything about the lower Colorado. I think it may still be flowing too hard, and it would just depend on your kayak and fitness level. I haven't been out there recently and will probably give it another week or two before I do go. My kayak is too heavy and is not the easiest to paddle. If you do decide to go, just keep your PFD on. Too many fatalities happening right now with all the flow.
Parth Venkat
Parth Venkat - 7 years ago
that's the stretch i hope to do Saturday, any idea what flow's the highest you'd take it at? Taken from 100 to 3k and had a blast (more rafting than fishing at the top) wondering if 5 or 6k would be safe.

I have fished that river twice ! Once with a guide and me and my brother caught like 39 bass.A couple of cats and a few white bass! I went on my own and caught 20 whites and 10 other bass .Its a good river to fish but you really need a boat.Bank fishing for cats can be good there too! I liked your film. You are honest and din't bs us! Some time you catch fish and other times you catch sun! I use my 14.3 Jackson Big Tuna with 55 trolling motor with my two dogs.Good times!!!!!

The river is completly different then any lake ive ever fished. Its not uncommon to go out and catch 50 fish in a day but a little rain will absolutely kill the bite. Where did y'all put in and take out at?

It's a club sport that operates like many of the other clubs there. There is an adviser but the club is run by the anglers. It is also one of the oldest fishing clubs in the country. The club pairs up boaters and non boaters and has 4 tournaments per semester. It is a lot of fun and there is no try outs, all levels of fishermen are in the club so there is a lot of knowledge passes around.

When float fishing in a kayak you can figure on roughly 2 miles an hour in most normal flows.(i.e. when there's not a big release or heavy rainfall runoff). I usually calculate 1.7 miles/hour when fishing. Over that 16 miles I would have estimated 10-11 hours which would have left time for plenty of fishing, resting, and having lunch. How long did the trip take? Great video....better luck next time on the bass.
