Thans for being honest.
When something grabs it. And this is the hard part. Don't reel or set the hook. Give the fish about 5 feet of line. When it gets tight then start reeling. That will allow the fish to get a good hold but not yet swallowed it and the circle hook works as intended. If it is a big one, he will be moving fast enough to hook himself if you don't have time to give him line. The big ones grab it and close their mouth and when the feel some resistance they jerk their head sideways and that gets them every time. Plus if you have the time to give them line you can bet it will be 20 pounds or smaller. If you do not have the time then you can bet it is at least a 30 pouder. The 21 ponders to 29 ponders are in a gray area. Some them have gotten the head jerk behavior down and some have not.

I love fishing from them targeting catfish. I am learning so much from your Channel. can you recommen a fish finder / sonar depth finder. I really want to put one on my kayak. I need to be able to locate structure and depth. thank you so much. which model do you use ? and what would you recommend ?
The thing I rely on more than anything is the navionics app. I have the $10 version on my phone. In my opinion, that is the absolute most important piece of equipment for catfishing. If you don't have your bait on good structure, you aren't going to catch anything. The navionics app will show you all the contours of the area you are fishing and the gps function in it is pretty accurate. I mainly use my fish finder to just to correlate with the navionics app to make sure I am where I think I am on structure. A lot of guys will tell you that you need a top of the line fishfinder but personally I recommend getting the cheapest unit that you can find that will show depth, water temp, and your speed. Spend the extra money you save on the Buck Perry book series to learn how to read structure. Those books will be the best investment you ever make for fishing.
Thanks for all the info. I'm a happy new subscriber. Thanks for the Navionics recommendation, it will be a big help.

I'm really wanting to try this for handline fishing. Prolly use 100 braid just to protect my hands. If not that 250 lbs mono would do it.
Fishing has been pretty inconsistent for me lately too. I went out on Friday and had a decent day but got skunked last night. I couldn't get a dink to even peck at my bait last night.
That's the one drawback of kayak fishing. Once you have chosen an area, you are committed to it. There is no motoring a few miles over to the next place. It is still a heck of a lot more rewarding when you do get on fish in the kayak though.
Thanks so much for the videos! I'm learning a lot and hoping to start catfishing in a kayak next spring.
I do let the big fish pull me around. There is no better adrenaline rush than when a big fish doubles your rod over in the kayak. It's a heck of a ride. Like you said, the kayak basically acts as a drag system or bobber in the water.
Thank you again for watching!
