Thanks for what you do. I've learned more from watching your videos than I ever knew about fishing. I have a quick question that I haven't been able to find the answer. When fishing with live bait, such as skipjack or bluegill, when the bait dies, do you continue to fish the dead bait whole, or do you cut the bait and use it as a cut bait?
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
Thank you for watching! I am glad you have found the videos helpful. To answer your question, I will usually cut it if it dies but you don’t have too.

I have never lost a catch with this. Skipjack head bait. I have a long pair of needlenose. I put the them in through the mouth and push through. I grab my hook with the needlenose and I pull them back out the mouth. The hook is now exposed coming out of the mouth. Cast it out and wait.
When something grabs it. And this is the hard part. Don't reel or set the hook. Give the fish about 5 feet of line. When it gets tight then start reeling. That will allow the fish to get a good hold but not yet swallowed it and the circle hook works as intended. If it is a big one, he will be moving fast enough to hook himself if you don't have time to give him line. The big ones grab it and close their mouth and when the feel some resistance they jerk their head sideways and that gets them every time. Plus if you have the time to give them line you can bet it will be 20 pounds or smaller. If you do not have the time then you can bet it is at least a 30 pouder. The 21 ponders to 29 ponders are in a gray area. Some them have gotten the head jerk behavior down and some have not.

Used your technique on the Red River below the dam at Lake Texoma OK. I was in swift current with high winds. Cut skipjack straight down under an 8 oz weight at they nailed it. 10-12 feet of water and moving with the current. BAM! Thanks for the tips. I've been catching trophy cats for years, but never this way. Gracias Amigo!

Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 7 years ago
+Micah Middleton I fish out of a really stable kayak so I don't fear a fish flipping me. The drag on my reels would prevent the fish from getting enough pressure to flip me even if it was a monster. I have only come close to rolling the kayak once and that was due to my own stupidity. I was releasing a big fish and leaned way too far over. Fortunately I caught myself before i had to go swimming though. Thank you for watching!

Good to see you sharing that information. So many people don't share the baits and techniques. I don't believe it's my river or fish so if someone wants to join in then maybe I will get to see them catch the one I missed. Have you ever tried using stew meat? I buy a cheap round steak and cut chunks of it. It bleeds all day and they can't strip it off the hook. They seem to love it, at least in Washington.

fantastic that's what I understand you to say in the video as well. I am going to download that app and get me a cheap fish finder so that I can read the depth and temperature and structure on the bottom I think that will do it. I think what you do is fantastic. I really enjoyed my kayaks. I have about 12 rods and about 16 reels Wells of my fishing reels AR Abu Garcia 7000 series. also I have the Abu Garcia big game reels . I have never put line on any of my reel for all brand new. I went a little crazy LOL. I just love this cat fishing community. thanks my friend. I have a question. I have to sit on top kayaks.
I love fishing from them targeting catfish. I am learning so much from your Channel. can you recommen a fish finder / sonar depth finder. I really want to put one on my kayak. I need to be able to locate structure and depth. thank you so much. which model do you use ? and what would you recommend ?
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 7 years ago
+Jim Bilbrey I don't use an expensive, high tech model fish finder. With the type of fishing that I do, I have just never saw the need for one. All I basically need to know is the depth, water temp, and speed. I use a black and white lowrance mark 4 that I got refurbished on eBay.

The thing I rely on more than anything is the navionics app. I have the $10 version on my phone. In my opinion, that is the absolute most important piece of equipment for catfishing. If you don't have your bait on good structure, you aren't going to catch anything. The navionics app will show you all the contours of the area you are fishing and the gps function in it is pretty accurate. I mainly use my fish finder to just to correlate with the navionics app to make sure I am where I think I am on structure. A lot of guys will tell you that you need a top of the line fishfinder but personally I recommend getting the cheapest unit that you can find that will show depth, water temp, and your speed. Spend the extra money you save on the Buck Perry book series to learn how to read structure. Those books will be the best investment you ever make for fishing.

Man can't wait for spring. I'm on the Ohio river and this is going to be my first years kayak fishing for blues. Give me some more detailed tips on anchoring in current and boat control. Thanks for the great content man !
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 7 years ago
+Eric Blair Anchoring a kayak in current can be tough. I am fortunate that our current here is slow. It usually averages around 0.5mph and rarely exceeds 1mph. Be extremely cautious if you are fishing in faster flows. Things can go bad very fast. You may want to check out our Facebook group, Ultimate Kayak Catfishing. There are several guys in it who fish the Ohio and could probably give you some good advice on anchor fishing there.

I have used them for years and never had one break. I don't personally know of anyone who has broken one either but I have read reports of it being an issue though.

Ok cool, you haven't had a gamakatsu circle break? I've just heard a few guys talk about them breaking.

+Matt Potts I am currently using 8/0 Charlie Brown circle hooks from Bottom Dwellers but I used Gamakatsu 8/0 octopus circles for years without issue.

Love your videos! I'm over in Stewart County and fish the Cumberland and the Tennessee river. Several buddies and I have started getting together and kayak catfishing. In stronger current, how are you anchoring to keep the kayak from swaying back and forth? BTW, if you are ever in our neck of the woods...
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 7 years ago
+Ron Himmelhaver That is awesome Ron! I am always glad to hear about more people getting involved in kayak catfishing. Stronger current can be sketchy. I am very fortunate that the waters I fish doesn't usually have a very strong current. TVA has to be spilling for us to have current over 1mph on the section I fish. With that said, about the only thing I could recommend is putting a drift sock off the front of your kayak. If your anchor can hold your kayak and the drift sock, that should help decrease some of that sway. And thanks for the invitation. I will keep that in mind if I ever fish over your way.

+Black Warrior Lures Sounds fun. Good luck!
Black Warrior Lures
Black Warrior Lures - 7 years ago
That's about what I was thinking. I have oars, speed sock and a trolling motor on my little 12 jon boat, so getting the speed down shouldn't be a problem for me.

I'm really wanting to try this for handline fishing. Prolly use 100 braid just to protect my hands. If not that 250 lbs mono would do it.
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 7 years ago
+Black Warrior Lures I try to plan my trips when there is going to be current whenever possible. When there isn't, such as this past summer and fall during our drought, I have been trolling and dragging baits with pretty good success. I just fish the same areas and keep my speed around 0.5mph.

+John Edwards Thank you for the invite! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it down there over the holidays but I definitely would like to fish with you at some point.

Fishing has been pretty inconsistent for me lately too. I went out on Friday and had a decent day but got skunked last night. I couldn't get a dink to even peck at my bait last night.

That's the one drawback of kayak fishing. Once you have chosen an area, you are committed to it. There is no motoring a few miles over to the next place. It is still a heck of a lot more rewarding when you do get on fish in the kayak though.
John Edwards
John Edwards - 8 years ago
more than welcome to spend the night at my place on the river. I plan on going out around Christmas. Seems like you are on a consistent bite right now. I am struggling to find fish in the kayak. Fished my usual spots over thanksgiving and nothing to show. Finally found the bait a half mile from my spots farther down the ledge but that is the trouble with kayak fishing kind of stuck on the spots you choose.

nice advice! one question, how do you store some if you keep them to eat.... like 10lbs catfish
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 8 years ago
+chris pulley I release them all. Our water here is so polluted that it isn't safe to eat anything out of it.
dumeril7
dumeril7 - 8 years ago
Thank you, that was extremely informative. I have a couple of newbie questions if you don't mind. 1) When you're drift fishing, are you dropping the bait straight down (as opposed to casting)? 2) Also when you're drifting, when you're reeling in a big cat I assume that you're just letting the fish pull you around, effectively using your whole kayak as another drag system. Is that correct?

Thanks so much for the videos! I'm learning a lot and hoping to start catfishing in a kayak next spring.
dumeril7
dumeril7 - 8 years ago
Great, I am understanding this then! Thanks again!
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 8 years ago
+dumeril7 Thanks for watching the video. I will gladly answer any questions you have. I do drop my baits straight down when drifting. To be successful using this method, you have to control the depth your bait is at. Having them directly under you is the only way to know that your baits are exactly where you want them at all times.

I do let the big fish pull me around. There is no better adrenaline rush than when a big fish doubles your rod over in the kayak. It's a heck of a ride. Like you said, the kayak basically acts as a drag system or bobber in the water.

Thank you again for watching!

Interesting. How are you finding the bait on the flats. My portion of wheeler the flats extend for half mile on one side and over a mile on the other. The flats are 35 feet the whole way too. I really struggle fishing in warm water
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 8 years ago
+John Edwards My best success lately has come from drifting drop offs adjacent to flats that are full of bait. Water temps are still 76 here

+Adrian Grimaldo I have and I'm actually planning on doing a video on how to do it from a kayak. It's not too difficult as long as you have a kayak stable enough to stand in and a small cast net. I use a 4 foot net. It would probably be a lot harder with a bigger net though.
