Just started watching your channel and love the content thus far. I didn't see it answered (or asked) below, but what time of year would be the best chance to catch a Sailfish from Kayak with Deep Blue Kayak Charters? Thanks!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Thanks man! Sailfish season is right now. Winter months are best for Sails, but the weather can be less predictable. I’m down here now actually, fished with Deep Blue twice in the past two weeks. I got this sailfish in July, they’re here year-round, just not as many in the summer.

DJ Migs
DJ Migs - 6 years ago
I hope you know by now (2017) that's not really an Atlantic bonito. That's a false albacore and you can eat them. Bonito have vertical lines. Calling false albacore a bonito is a Florida thing although it's completely wrong. I take it, it's because they have so many other tastier fish that they are basically spoiled. You probably saw some REAL Bonitos while you were in Panama.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+DJ Migs no, we call them bonitA, not bonitO, and it's a very common nickname for false albacore. I'm well aware of the differences but i don't think it's "wrong" when an entire coastline calls a fish something. But I will disagree with you that false albacore are good eating, in Florida anyways.

i notice most you offshore guys favor the OutBack over PA any particular reason?
must say ,your videos one of a very few that i dont forward, great production.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Thanks bro! I think most of us prefer the Outback because it gets through the surf a lot easier. Also, on really rough days, that big PA can get a little squirly. Most days it's great once you get out there, though. Both solid boats.
Steve McC
Steve McC - 6 years ago
Way to go!  My 16 year old and I really enjoy your great videos. Lived down that way many years. Never gets old catching those fast, beautiful fish. We just got into the kayak universe, though, and truly appreciate your tips and advise. I do have a couple questions. Are some rod holders better than others, which do you prefer?  What kind of radio do you prefer? Thanks
Steve McC
Steve McC - 6 years ago
Robert Field hey thanks for the advice. I meant to ask you about paddles. Do you have a paddle that you think it is smart for being out on the ocean? I was kind of leaning toward Carlisle, maybe?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Awesome man! Those fish are definitely special. I like the Railblaza Rod Holder II. Get em at www.yak-gear.com

As for radios, I haven't had a ton of luck keeping one alive for more than a year, haha. I've used Uniden and Cobra, and I think I preferred Uniden best. My advice would be either go cheap so you can afford to replace them, or go expensive so they hold up. I always do the former.

Robert Field they spawn around June, that's for flats an blues both. I've caught a lot of my fish from April up till they start to spawn then after they come off the nest until the water temp gets below 40 and stays there. When I buy my kayak this month it would be great for you to come up here and drift fish the Ohio river with me!

BQ Outdoors - 7 years ago
Awesome vid brother great job on the sail. Is the truth reel a good reel do you think a two speed lever drag reel would do better or is the single speed good enough
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
The single speed worked fine for me, I think that's mostly personal preference. Kayak fishing is much more forgiving on a reel because your kayak moves before too much drag is applied. If you're land-based or boat-based fishing, you'll have stiffer requirements than I do.

Inbred will be inbred, this video would be awesome if that shark ate you. And your wife ( actually your daughter ) haha, get back in your kayak and kill some more fish to compensate hick.
weouchhere
weouchhere - 7 years ago
next time tell your wife (daughter) to get the abortion, before its made illegal because of inbred hicks like yourself. Im sure your wife (daughter) is only with you at this point for your endorsements and because you beat her... lol after all she is your daughter! .. that being said if they knew (your mediocre at best endorsements) that you, hick... left a rusty hook in a sharks mouth they probably would look at you and say "hick" pull your penis out of your sister!, And care for the oceans species so that everyone can have the enjoyment of catching a shark! not just your fat hick self, before there gone forever hick. Like I said though if your stupid enough to have a sexual relationship with your sister, your stupid enough to leave a hook in a innocent sharks mouth, thats fine though hick! with one of those fancy cameras you have not paid for, why not instead you get a close up of taking the hook out of the sharks mouth! instead of getting a close up on that inbred face.. Good job, take notes Hick!

What kind of two way radio are you using? Also, what is the make and model of your red reel and rod and what pound line?
sorry for all the questions but I'm new to fishing and even newer to Kayak fishing.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
+Jerome Cipriani it's a VHF radio by Uniden. That's what you want for offshore - a VHF - so you can call the coast guard. The red rod is a custom, the red reel is a Truth Reels SG and it is awesome. I'm using 40 pound braid as my main line with a 65 lb fluoro leader to a 61lb wire leader for these fish.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Juan Carlos Perez I didn't go full on it, with big fish I like to leave it looser so they can run when they want to, and then I thumb it when I want to put some pressure on them or pull them up to the surface near the boat. I'd rather have a slightly longer fight than risk losing the fish.

I watched another video & couldn't leave a comment- so I'm leaving it here- you hooked a small shark but you cut the line instead of pulling the hook- what the hell! I'm glad u did a catch & release but Why would u leave an animal like that to suffer the rest if it's life with a fat hook on the side of its mouth? Who are you? Why don't stop making videos if u have to harm creatures to make them! You are not important or significant. If u aren't going to humanely kill it & eat it- dont effing bother! This really bothers me! Really bothers me! Great! U just speared a fish and I hope u cut the vid and went back to shore but I bet u let it go- didn't you. Bleeding & suffering. Hope a great white comes up & bites u in the ass.
Jesse Britton
Jesse Britton - 5 years ago
Something Robert forgot to mention: The fish does not go the rest of its life suffering with a hook stuck in it's mouth....the hook comes out naturally several different ways. It can fall out, the saltwater can rapidly deteriorate it out, etc, etc. Regardless of how, all that matters is that it DOES come out. Sometimes it's even better for the fish's survival, if you DO cut the line...versus causing massive damage handling stressing, and unhooking.

Please, in the future, do some research on something you are not knowledgeable about....instead of attacking, and wishing harm upon, someone over your baseless, false, assumptions.

Robert, way to handle this ridiculous comment with pure class....very respectful, and admirable. Tight lines man...keep crushing life.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Susana Gabriel If you would go back and read the video description on that video, I explain why I cut the line. And no, I have never "speared" a fish and then let it go. I speared a fish to eat it. Thanks for watching.

+Baracuda 13 it's a great entry level kayak for the money, but it's not great for offshore. If you're staying inshore, lakes, rivers, it's a great choice. The front hatch is known to leak, which is a problem when going through surf. Other than that I recommend it.

let me add... its the manner in which they promote. that "when i fish, i fish with so and so" or in the buzz case "when i drink beer, i drink bud light", or Teresa from the buzz "when i buy a car, i buy at direct auto"... they making it personal to them which they know they wouldnt ever drink that watered down beer or buy at that dealership, when there are better buying options. just make it like a real commercial and say buy this! i boycotted the buzz, i like Robert Field's later videos, those were awesome... the reason I subscribed!

If i had an interest in financing one of your trips, believe me I would do it! its all constructive criticism, no harm intended, i'll be better for it on the next go around, cause next time i won't come off as griping but only as a want to conserve the purity of the sport!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+jgcastro713 I had one 30-second segment where I'm talking about a product I use in a 30 minute video. People ask me all the time to talk about the gear I use, so each video I pick one or two to talk about. Pearl Jam and Jeremy Wade get paid big bucks to do what they do, I do this for free for your entertainment. And when I say free, really this trip cost me about $2,000 out of my own pocket. If you want to gripe, feel free to help cover my expenses and we can produce it the way YOU want to. Until then, I'll do it the way I want to. Thanks for watching brother.

"Another damn bonita". Those are a prized catch up here in New England.
RIYakFishing
RIYakFishing - 8 years ago
We get BonitA AKA false albacore up here in New England for about 2 months a year and they are HIGHLY sought after.  They are not good eating and most anglers will release them.  But, false albacore is definitely not a junk fish up here.  BonitO, or Atlantic Green Bonito are also a highly sought after catch up here.  They come around the same time as False Albacore and are VERY good eating.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+RIYakFishing I think you're thinking of bonitO, not bonitA. They're two different fish. Bonito are good eating, bonita are very bloody and only used for bait that I know of. Bonita is also called false albacore, bonito are atlantic bonito.

I have an older mirage sport and I want to upgrade. Would you go pa or outback? Thanks!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+LITTLE NIMROD the Outback is more versatile, the Pro Angler will be more comfortable but can't go everywhere the Outback can go. Also, the Pro Angler is significantly more expensive and difficult to transport. If those aren't issues for you, the Pro Angler is a great kayak. The Outback suits me better personally.

Best kayak fishing video I've ever seen!
Awesome dude awesome!
You are the man!
How many gopros & batteries do you take?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+LightRockFishing Valladares I typically run five GoPros lately, but two are very situational shots like attached to my gaff or my paddle or something. For batteries I typically have about 3-4 spares on me per camera. That's all excessive though, I think the average videographer can get away with 2 or 3 cameras so they can get a few angles of each shot to keep the shot moving constantly.

Crazy footage bro! Hey I'm new to fishing... I want to buy a fishing reel for lake and pond fishing for game smaller than 5lbs. What can I buy? What's the best tackle to buy and what type of line should I use. Thanks
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Jose Ortega I use Manley Rods for small game (www.manleyrods.com) and Lews makes some great reels around $100 that are often on sale. I typically use 20lb FINS braid as my main line with a 15lb Seaguar fluoro leader for bass and stuff like that.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Richard Kayak Fishing 40 lb braid main line with a 6-foot 80 lb fluoro leader to a 3-foot 80 lb single strand wire leader for offshore fishing. Fluoro is optional but I think it matters when trolling if the water is clear like in south Florida. If the water isn't super clear, skip the mono and just go braid to wire.
Richard Yakfish
Richard Yakfish - 8 years ago
+Robert Field Thank you very much for replaying, for this type of fishing, do you use mono or bried?
