Kayak Fishing: BIG Sharks Offshore

In this episode of YakFish TV, Robert Field takes a trip to the Florida gulf coast with one goal: to catch a variety of new species from the kayak. The first target: sharks. Come along for the ride as he heads offshore on the Forgotten Coast in search of some big toothy fish from his 12-foot Hobie kayak. Featuring tips for enticing big fish to bite, techniques for fighting and landing a big shark safely, and non-stop action, this film is a wild ride from start to finish. Robert accomplishes his goal of landing a new species, but it does not come easy. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Me on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/RF_FBook Instagram → http://bit.ly/RF_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/RF_Tweet Google+ → http://bit.ly/RF_G-Plus ▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow YakFish TV on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/YFTV_FB Instagram→ http://bit.ly/YFTV_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/YFTV_Tweet Website → http://www.yakfish.tv ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Favorite Brands ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ http://www.nrs.com http://www.accentpaddles.com http://www.railblaza.com http://www.fishbrain.com http://www.yak-gear.com ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Shop the Gear I Use! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Main Camera → http://bit.ly/RJF_DSLR Action Camera → http://bit.ly/RJF_GoPro Editing Software → http://bit.ly/RJF_Editing Audio Recorder → http://bit.ly/RJF_Audio Camera Boom → http://bit.ly/RJF_Boom Rod Holder → http://bit.ly/RJF_RodHolder Spin Rod/Reel → http://bit.ly/RJF_SpinCombo Casting Reel → http://bit.ly/RJF_CastReel

Nice video watched the whole thing. What are you going to do when you get a nasty bull or white pointer? What are the things that you need to know in order to be safe out on the water?

Robert - Would you be willing to do a short episode and go through the tackle you use for kayak shark fishing? If I'm studying your gear correctly, you are one of the few who intentionally do not use a steel bite leader - but prefer mono. Would you be willing to speak to that & the techniques you use to fish for sharks from the Yak? Thanks very much!

Absolutely man! I’ll reply to every single comment for as long as it’s still possible. You took the time to watch and comment, it’s the least I can do to reply back! Thanks for watching man and good luck with the sharks!

Robert - You are a stud for answering back personally. I honestly didn't think you'd take the time with so many followers. Thank you so much for your advice and explaining how & why you fish the way you do. I'm learning from you. Much appreciated!!!

I may do something like that down the road, but for now, here’s what I run: 65# braid main line, 350lb bar swivel, 400# mono leader, crimp to a 16/0 circle hook. Super simple. I don’t use wire so that if something goes wrong and I have to cut the line in a pinch, I don’t have to worry about my knife hitting steel. With the circle hook, I don’t get many bite offs, but it does happen. 6” of steel before the hook isn’t a bad idea if you want to maximize landing ratio. Make the mono leader longer than the length of the shark you’re targeting. It’s there to prevent tail swipes from breaking the braid (their tail will break through 65# braid with ease).

Why do you release your anchor when you have a fish
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
It can just get sketchy when you get a big fish circling around the kayak while connected to an anchor. If a 6+ foot shark were to wrap around my anchor line, things could get messy (and dangerous) in a hurry. I prefer to detach and go for a ride, but I need a more visible float for my anchor obviously.

Do yourself a favour and buy a T-bar it still works on round hooks and you'd have had it off first shake.
They cost next to nothing and save a lot of messing about.

Ideal if your catching north Atlantic mackrel because if you touch them with dry hands it kills them.

Mortality is normally around 5 days.

I had never seen a T-bar until I went wreck fishing but I don't fish without one now.

This may be a dumb question but why do you release your anchor from the kayak after you have hooked up?
StackAttackFishing
StackAttackFishing - 7 years ago
Robert Field ok that makes sense, my thought was not releasing to help keeping you in place so a big fish ain't dragging you around everywhere
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
I do for a couple reasons: 1) So I'm not putting a ton of pressure on my anchor trolley that it's connected to. 2) So I don't get a big shark wrapped around my anchor line, which could get dangerous in a hurry. 3) So I don't get spooled if it's a big one.

If you were half as educated on the subject as your condescending comment implies, you wouldn't be wasting your breath bitching about a kayak angler. You think dudes in plastic boats catching and releasing sharks is contributing to shark population declines? That's one of the more absurd theories I've ever heard. The Japanese are killing them by the millions each year, cutting off their fins and tossing their bodies back into the ocean, but you choose to fight your battle on a YouTube video of a dude who caught three sharks from his kayak and let them go. You're silly bud, but thanks for watching!

why the fuck would you intentionally fish for sharks out of a kayak
Weird Science
Weird Science - 6 years ago
Robert Field: I understand its an adventure, but you are playing Russian roulette with your life. I am certain sharks circle small boats because they want to get you into the water. Every circle is an investigation and they can do it for days even weeks, until they work out how to get you in the water. Eventually they will and will capsize you. he rest is up to your imagination. You can also be hit by larger sharks and big fish chasing up the fish you catch.

People don't get it until they do it. My family look at me like I'm crazy for trying to catch fish out of a kayak but the rush you get from the unknown when fishing out of a kayak let alot fishing for something half the length or bigger is amazing! You add the normal enjoyment of being on the water and the rush is ridiculous. Few people would understand. Keep on fishing!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Because it's fun and a rush? Why would you jump out of a plane with a parachute? Or cage dive with sharks? Or ride a roller coaster? Or rock climb up a cliff? Because some people don't like cruising through life sitting on the couch. Get out there and do something that scares you brother, might be surprised by how enjoyable it can be.

Crocs are only up north and if you live up north in Australia i wouldn't go kayaking at all people in small boats have had the boat flipped over so good luck. Australia also have shark nets in most places.

lucky for you no crocodiles either! very aggressive and territorial lol wish me luck
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Well it depends on which kayak, some are more stable than others. But the short answer is yes: any big, powerful fish could knock you out. You want to gain some experience and familiarity with the boat's limits before you go offshore and tangle with big sharks. Also, you guys have great whites, which is a serious concern I don't have to worry about too much in the Gulf of Mexico (extremely rare here). Great white is the one fish in the ocean that scares me in a kayak.

Went kayaking at my family's property on the hood canal up here in Washington, wasn't fishing was just cruising. Was roughly 100 yards from the shore when I saw a dark figure circling me about ten feet down and it was about twice the size of my kayak, it scared the living shit out of me. Ever since then I have a strong fear of kayaking. Didn't help that a marine biologist had said he saw what he believes was a great white, jump in the air behind his boat, roughly a mile south of our property. U should come fish up here and see what u find

I'm terrified of sharks. I'm a long time whitewater kayaker. Fear keeps me from ocean. My main concern for you is a large shark taking one of your smaller sharks. Inadvertently knocking you in w them. Oh how I shudder. Plz be careful. Interesting vid but quite scary.
Way of the Dog MHDogman
Way of the Dog MHDogman - 8 years ago
+Robert Field I don't know how that kayak can keep your balls afloat?
Advice. Learn to roll before getting into real whitewater. If not you'll be swimming. A kayaker never bails unless forced to. Take good care. Smiles
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+matt hibbard I hear you, it's important to always pay attention and stay focused. If a bigger shark took a smaller shark or fish I had hooked, I would be fine. I loosen my drag when the fish is near my kayak (as I mentioned in the video), so if that fish got taken, line would simply rip off my reel without gaining leverage on me to flip me. Now, if a big shark physically knocked into my kayak there's always a chance I could fall off. Those types of fears are a 1 in a million type of situation though, so I don't worry about it much. Thanks for watching brother! I want to try the whitewater thing...

+Antonio Hernandez for spinning I was using the Penn Carnage rod, it's super heavy. For a low budget conventional option, check out the Penn m309 reel and the Ugly Stik Tiger rod. $60 each for a $120 combo. Not a ton of drag though, so if you're fishing from the beach the Penn 309 might not be enough. A penn 9/0 would work.

+ronswansonsnightmare most of the advice on fighting sharks is in the video. You want a leader as long as the shark you're targeting. It's there to prevent their tail from breaking your line because their skin is so rough. I was using a 6-8 foot leader depending on how heavy my setup was. Beyond 8 feet, I'm not sure I want to catch that shark. Haha

I must say. U get a lot of negative comments on ur videos. I regret that, since today, sharks are very lucky to have people who want to catch & release them. Release being the operative word here.

Ur probably one of the best friend to sharks these days, as most sports fisherman are & always have been. Also, it seems many have not watched the videos in which u remove the hooks, which seems to be the biggest & only objection anyone has mentioned. Even I questioned the practice of leaving hooks in, until I learned more about sharks' mouths. It's very good that u explained the hook issue & how u deal with it here. Good job. I admire ur integrity & ur hobby. So cool.
Robert Field

+Julia McDonald-Carberry as the kids say these days, "haters gonna hate." There will always be people that just need to gripe about something. I do my best to respect the animals after learning from that mistake when I first started fishing. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching.

Julia McDonald-Carberry - 8 years ago
Can't u guys use long pliers & remove the hooks from the shark's mouths. Must u leave them in? It would seem the could interfere with the shark feeding. Was the shark that was jumping in this video a small Mako? Couldn't be sure but it looked as if it was.
By the way, this man is very buff. Does Kayak fishing do this? If so, I'm ready to move to a coast & have my husband take up the hobby. Me too maybe. I've watched a few of these. Great videos.

I try to remove them when possible, but sometimes if it won't come out, you'll kill the fish leaving it out of the water trying to remove it. Sometimes the best thing for the shark is to leave 'em with a lip ring. Thanks for watching mate!

+Robert Field I know the feeling with not wanting to break the line.  I fish for largemouth bass, which granted are smaller, but also use lighter line.  Ten pounds can feel massive on 6 lb line with a medium light bass rod.  You just gotta make sure the drag is loose enough before you go out so that you can use the rod for leverage and continue reeling even when the fish starts pulling back.  Then line will be released as the fish nears the point of breaking the line or rod.  It's sort of a magic formula finding your rod and reels proper drag for your purpose, isn't it?

Robert Field

+RobertTheFisherman really it just takes practice man. My first videos were not very good. Keep putting out content and watching other people's videos and yours will get better and better. For tackle for these fish, I use a 16/0 circle hook, 400# monofilament leader (about 8-feet), and 50 pound braid or mono main line.

I was wondering if u could tell me what's the proper gear to have for kayak fishing (nothing too serious like shark, but like snapper and mackerel). I have seen a few sharks out were near my condo is set up. But don't really wanna head that direction yet. Thanks!

I just found these videos, very cool.  I would be afraid when trying to get the hook out that the shark would thrash it's head and take your hand off, or at least a few fingers anyway.  I can't image putting my hand(s) that close to a sharks mouth.  I would also be afraid that while I was messing around with the shark I caught by the side of the boat that a MUCH larger shark might have followed the first shark in and suddenly decides to go after it right when you're pulling the hook out.  It would really suck to have a great white come up and try and take your freshly caught shark away from you, by force, a LOT of force.  Again, cool videos.  Stay safe.

Over 12,000 of these beautiful and amazing species are murdered every hour. 200,000,000+ sharks are slaughtered in one year. This is why sharks go extinct. To people like you.
Julia McDonald-Carberry
Julia McDonald-Carberry - 8 years ago
Ur statement about the number of sharks "killed" each yr is inaccurate. It's 1 million & this guy releases them. He's actually promoting a sport that tries to preserve sharks so they can be experienced in this way. However, I would prefer to see long pliers used to remove the hook in lieu of leaving them in. They may interfere with feeding in some species (Blues & Oceanic Whitetips) but we haven't proven that yet. Still, it's better to let them rust out than to have this man lose a hand &/or his forearm.

+a3blocker Ok, did you come to watch the video or to start an argument? This man is NOT killing sharks. He's merely catching them and releasing them trying to do as little damage to the shark as possible. People who kill and fin sharks for fun and food are the real danger like Ben Shavers said. I don't know if you see the difference between killing for fun and catching for fun. But whales are more on the verge of extinction than sharks even though that has nothing to do with this video.

Yet again you're incorrect. It's illegal in the state of Florida to kill sharks, not fish for them. Also, fish, or sharks, aren't severely injured at any point unless the hook is swallowed or caught in the fins. This can be completely avoided if the correct techniques are used.
a3ology
a3ology - 8 years ago
+Ben Shavers Once a fish, or shark, has been caught by hook, it is permanently injured, to the point of death, or extreme suffering. Plus, fishing for sharks is also illegal.
Benjamin Shavers
Benjamin Shavers - 8 years ago
You act like you're doing good, which I find hilarious. Also, did you see him kill a shark? No you didn't. People that slaughter sharks for fun are the ones to worry about, not the people who catch and release. Next time, use common sense. Thank you.

+LordSeemz I did that once on my first shark because I didn't know any better. But yes, the hooks rust. I do not use stainless steel hooks, so mine rust quickly. But there's plenty of footage out there of divers observing sharks feeding just fine with hooks in their mouths. It's definitely not ideal, so I remove the hook whenever possible, but as you can imagine it can be very difficult from a kayak.

Not only is this illegal, but it is also very terrible. You are harming and often killing an endangered species. If you want the thrill, take a GoPro and take diving lessons to go and hand feed sharks, or go in a shark tank.

You obviously know nothing of what you speak of just another bleeding heart with no life trolling a youtube looking for stuff to complain about. Addison Macaluso
Addison Macaluso - 8 years ago
+a3blocker  http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/sharks/ These regulations are based on continuous demographic studies on each species of shark and allow for a rate of harvest that does not effect a sufficient breeding population. If you read through this page, you will find that nothing done in this video is illegal. Most fishermen, as the one in this video, respect these regulations.  Any form of catch and release shark fishing is legal, and proper hooking of the fish does not kill it.  Exploitation of shark species is not seen by recreational fishermen, but by those who take advantage of the high value that the Chinese have established on them for "Shark Fin Soup". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_fin_trading_in_Costa_Rica Recreational fishermen have more respect, understanding and appreciation for these animals than a majority of the human population. I appreciate your concern for these magnificent fish, but you are attacking the wrong group of people.
Jay Dee

This A3 person is a MineCraft dork. He doesn't leave his Momma's basement so he doesn't understand that in the real world, fish can be caught by hooks and go on to live long healthy lives. He doesn't know these things because he sits in the dark all day reading what other idiots like him say about a lot of topics they know nothing about. Also, I believe he may be between the age of 11-15 by how immature his Google+ page is and the immaturity of the subject matter on his page.

+a3blocker What I'm saying is that you wouldn't die from a hook, you stated that if the shark will most likely die if it was hooked.
a3ology
a3ology - 8 years ago
+Vannara Meas If a hook is strong enough to pull a shark, yes. Would you like a hole in your cheek pulling you through water? And this is exactly what I mean. We are forced to put sharks in aquariums because of people that kill them.
Vannara Meas
Vannara Meas - 8 years ago
Also, where are your cite sources, are you just saying what you think or what?
Vannara Meas
Vannara Meas - 8 years ago
+a3blocker From a hook, right? Are you kidding? The average human wouldn't die from a fishing hook stabbed through their cheeks. This is why we have aquariums and animal sanctuaries, if an animal was endangered, they would've been in either of those places.

Once a shark or fish (or other sea creature) has been caught by hook, it is permanently damaged, and will have severe pain for its life, and most likely die a few minutes later.
Jay Dee
Jay Dee - 8 years ago
+a3blocker You're dense. No one is wanting or even trying to kill anything.
Bartłomiej Szpakowski
Bartłomiej Szpakowski - 8 years ago
+a3blocker Isn't it exacly what he's doing? - Reaching in the mouth of an alive shark? He's not killing them and it's true that he's damaging them slightly but the damage is so minor that It doesn't even matter that much. If you ever bothered to read some research you would know that damage caused by hooks almost never affects the fish. Biggest threat is stress and wrong handling. The way he's doing it is probably the safest thing he can do for both shark and himself.
Vannara Meas
Vannara Meas - 8 years ago

-Also they are endangered if they are being killed off by 2M per year, when there is less than 1 billion left.

And also, be mature here. These "offenses" are not hurting anyone, but are proving how young you are to be replying, at the age of 17-. Have a normal argument. Not those "penis jokes" those teenage boys always talk about...
a3ology
a3ology - 8 years ago
Well I think, personally, that murdering an almost extinct species has no thrill of the DOing. I think that getting close and reaching in the mouth of an alive shark, or even swimming with one is DOing. And for those who will like to illegally kill something for sport, which does nothing good for anyone, should honestly rethink what they do, as for rapidly killing off sharks at 200,000,000 per year. (11,000/hour)

I filmed that part but the audio was terrible so I ended up leaving it out. I use a 16/0 circle hook, 150lb bar swivels, and my leader is 400lb mono. You want your leader as long as the shark you're targeting, so 6ft leader for 6ft sharks. It's not for their teeth, it's to keep their tail from swiping and breaking your main line. Their skin is very rough and will cut through 40lb mono (what I use for my mainline) like butter as they're swimming away.

That Nurse shark was awesome they are very hard to bring up because Nurse sharks do not surface on there on. I did not think they feed during day light but your video proved that wrong.

Do you ever chum the water to attract them to your bait. Not sure if people do that from a kayak or not.

That Hobie and the way you have it rigged is nothing short of outstanding .
Appreciate you don't leave the gear behind . The nurse sharks certainly know how to pull , even their body is shaped for it . It was a male btw .

Why don't you swap with the shark then.
Put a hook in your mouth and let him drag you along for a spot of fun.... then when you've had enough just tap him on the fin and he'll release you without even taking a bite. Assclown.

There was a study that concluded that fish don't have the brain capacity to feel pain, the only reason it's splashing around is because of natural instinct.

Have grown up freshwater fishing, just recently started fishing some of Florida's east coast piers and beaches (mostly Jetty and Sebastian). When using circle hooks, how long do you let the fish run before setting the hook? Thanks for the help.

What kind of cooler or box do you have in the back that you were putting the mackerel in, also where do you keep all your tackle. I've kayak fished about a year now but just picked up a hobie adventure trying to find a good setup and I like the look of that box. Awesome video surprised the nurse shark fought so long.

Hey, hello - I'm Jim.  Great video!  Question:  Do you ever keep a shark for a meal?  If so, what do you recommend?   I ask because some time ago, I was at an outdoor picnic kind of thing, and the host was doing steaks and chicken on the grill.  His brother-in-law showed up, and had shark steaks that had been kept in a gallon bag with some Italian dressing.  The brother-in-law said, "just grill them like you would a steak."   WELL NOW....When the picnic was over, there was chicken left over, there were STEAKS left over, but there was no, and I mean NO, shark left over.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
I have kept a couple small blacktips. We cut them into steaks but I've only ever eaten them while camping on the beach so our cooking setup is usually pretty limited.

James Ritter
James Ritter - 9 years ago
Com tex - GET A LIFE.  The only "pathetic" thing on this page is YOUR post.  Here's why that's true:

Just a little while later - because it wanted to eat - that shark that was caught and released in the above video - DELIBERATELY KILLED and ATE another (sniffle) poor (sob) marine creature.

And you know what, Com tex?  The shark may have just wounded it first and then ate it ALIVE.

And you know what else?  That shark felt NOTHING in the way of regret.

Agreed, a buddy is always good and I normally have a few, but this was in FL and I didn't have anyone to go with that day. But I did have guys on shore that were ready to call the coast guard or bring their kayak out to help if I needed it. That's who I talked to on the VHF radio when I hooked into the bigger blacktip. Thanks for watching!

Rich Norman
Rich Norman - 9 years ago
Achigurh88 Balloons have always been a staple as floats for Shark fishing. They can hold up a huge bait, and like he said, they're usually gone pretty quick and are easy to see.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
I use them because they're really visible for when the swells get bigger and they pop once the shark runs so it doesn't hold up the shark or put up a lot of resistance (so they don't drop the bait at first).

Awesome video!  Some of the biggest sharks I've seen landed on a kayak.

Just out of curiosity, why not use a reel with lever drag?  You loosen and tighten the drag a lot, seems like a lever drag would be easier and more accurate for that.

No picking on Penn's! :) I'm old school, my Penn Long Beach 68 is up for anything. (That's a reel on par with a 6/0 for the younger guys)  Obviously you can appreciate the finer things, unlike some that think you have to spend a bunch of money on the "new" stuff. It would suck to have a $600 reel fall out of a Kayak. :) Big Penn's have been bringing in monster fish since before any of us were born. Great vid.

Those are some cheap $60 Penn reels. I've got a lot of gear and it isn't cheap, I skimp where I can. I fish for a very wide variety of species, so I need a lot of different gear. I can't spend a ton on any one thing. I'll fish for sharks one week and crappie the next, haha.

That blacktip tail slam & beast of a nurse; WOW!  Excellent footage and fantastic catches, all...the fight on that nurse shark had to be killer, then the paddle home.  Bet you felt that in the morning, though with fond memories! :D  Good tips on the barb crushing and rod positioning, too. You def don't have the leverage in a small boat that you do on land or a larger craft and you've got to respect the power of big fish.
