Well you’d be wrong I suppose. That’s like a 10 pound fish. I caught a 275 pound sturgeon on 30 lb test in a more recent video. It’s all about working your drag properly

Skid Mark
Skid Mark - 6 years ago
Cool video. How come beginning at 9:03, you begin to revive and release the sailfish, and you are not wearing a glove on the hand holding the bill. Then it keeps switching between the above and underwater view as you revive the fish, but every time it is the underwater view, you are wearing a glove, and above water, you are not?
Skid Mark
Skid Mark - 6 years ago
Oh, that makes sense. Maybe next time only use the footage from above the water, or wear the same glove as your buddy, lol. It just looked odd. As I said before though, cool video. I enjoyed watching it.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Skid Mark because I took clips from two different sailfish revivals. Some clips were from Brian’s sailfish in the video before this one. If you’ve never tried it, it’s difficult to film yourself releasing a sailfish in a kayak. It’s a 3 hand job. So I supplemented some clips from the sailfish the day before.

Any advice on a kayak for $1000 or less? Maybe a little more. Something versatile. Offshore and inshore use. There are lots of brands. It's hard to navigate sometimes.
Raid Burltin
Raid Burltin - 6 years ago
Robert Field- That's the plan. I just want something I can grow as a kayak fisherman with. But I do realize my limited budget is a downfall.
Thanks a lot for your reply! I love your channel.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Hard to find something for offshore and inshore for under $1,000. Inshore is much simpler. For inshore, the Perception Pescador Pro, Pelican Catch 120 or Wilderness Systems Ride 135 are solid. For offshore I'd look at Ocean Kayaks. You can go offshore in anything if conditions are right, but in rougher water you may find yourself wishing you spent more. I'd stick with inshore until you get really comfortable on the yak first anyways.

Ok so I don't watching fishing videos at all and I rarely fish, and when I do fish I only do it on lakes. Why would you want to bait out a shark? Is it just to see one? Idk so I wanted to know what the pros in the comments had to say
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Because they're fun to catch! I drove all the way to Florida and the other fish weren't cooperating, so I figured I'd go for a shark just so I could catch SOMETHING. When that didn't work either, I was feeling discouraged.
RichTrails

how fast are those hobie outbacks? they look like tanks
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
They're definitely fast. In a race against a Viking Reload I'd put my money on the Outback, but only because of the pedals. Now, with a very experienced paddler, the Viking might take it. I got to paddle one in Louisiana, and those yaks are fast.

Well depends which fish you're talking about, I have several combos I use. I like Penn reels for spinning in saltwater, their rods are fine too. For conventional reels (like the red one I have in this vid) I use Truth Reels, this one is their SG (Small Game). Incredible reels. For line I typically have 40lb braid main line.

how do u keep from getting pulled by the fish since in your in a kayak catching those big fish I  would think they could tow you?sorry im only familiar with freshwater fishing mostly
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
The big fish always tow you around for a while, that's the fun part! Once they wear out you can get them closer to the kayak. Fishing kayaks are more stable than traditional kayaks, so you can handle bigger fish next to them without flipping. It's always a risk though, I know plenty of guys who have flipped on top of fish, and I've flipped my kayak a few times also.

Hey man I was wondering what rod reel combo you use for your salt water fishing out of your kayak for bigger fish like in this vid
Nicholas McMahon
Nicholas McMahon - 7 years ago
+Robert Field thank you man! I enjoy your vids a lot, salt and fresh I am in the Houston area so really feels like I could do some of the stuff you do. Keep making great vids man they are appreciated.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
I have several combos I use. I like Penn reels for spinning in saltwater, their rods are fine too. Just get the best you can afford, in like a 5000-6000 class. For conventional reels (like the red one I have in this vid) I use Truth Reels, this one is their SG (Small Game). Incredible reels. For line I typically have 40lb braid main line and then the leader depends on what type of fish I'm going for.

What bait did you use for the mahi?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
I was throwing a paddle tail swimbait for them mostly, we were using sardines to chum them up. This one wound up hitting a goggle eye that I was trolling. I'm not sure what the technical name for them is, but everyone in Florida calls them goggle eyes or gogs. Baitfish with big eyes.

I was actually getting nervous watching you dangle your feet off the sides after spearing the mahi in what you'd just shown to be hammerhead waters. haha not a fan of the sharks
Michael Coomer
Michael Coomer - 7 years ago
Great video, but man you're make me nervous when I see you dangling your feet in the water. I worked with this guy at Boeing, and about a year after he retired he was killed by a shark while kayak fishing in Hawaii. I know your chances of winning the lottery are probably better than being bitten by a shark, but you might want to think about it.

Robert Field

+Mert Cimrin I've never fished for them and not from the area, so I was just repeating what people told me. That's why I said "people consider them a trash fish," because they do. But every fish is edible... I'm sure if you prepare them right they taste just fine.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+the fruit hunter I had this debate on Facebook with locals in the area, we all agreed it was a sailfish. They travel in packs. When they relax their dorsal fin, the sail part disappears and it looks like a marlin. Google "sailfish" and you'll see examples. I thought the same thing when I first saw it too. Marlin are VERY rare that close to shore, but it's always possible!

Great video! What reel was on that red rod?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Brad Shitnlager That's a Truth Reels (formerly Release Reels) SG. It was my first time using it and that reel is incredible. It's really light, rock solid, American-made, and it can handle anything. It's their "smaller" conventional reel and still held over 450 yards of 40lb braid. I'll be buying a few more, they're worth every penny.

Hey I have a question. My birthday is coming up soon, and I wanted to get a kayak for fishing. And I wanted to know, what type of kayak I should get. I want an all around kayak to fish in lakes, slow moving rivers, and in the ocean. How much would this cost me? Also sweet video, out here in the SF bay, I want to get a kayak and fish for batrays, they would pull me around, they are strong. I also would go up to berryessa or clear lake and catch some good sized bass.

How do you get your audio on the gopro's to sound great?
Benny Gallegos
Benny Gallegos - 8 years ago
+Robert Field thanks for the help!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Benny Gallegos a combination of techniques. An audio recorder with a lav mic is the best route, then layer the audio onto the video footage of you talking, and match the audio up to your lips moving. Or, you'll notice I almost always have a GoPro on my head when I'm narrating, I'm taking the audio from that one and again layering it onto the video that's facing me while I talk. Takes a bit to match it up to your lips the first few times, but once you start doing it it gets much easier and faster. I also increase the volume of the narrations in the editing. Hope that helps brother.

Great video thanks for sharing! Question... How do you keep the live well buckets secured to the boat?
Geo Herrera
Geo Herrera - 8 years ago
Awesome! Thx for the info!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Geo Herrera the Hobie livewell has buckle straps that attach directly to the Hobie. For a bait bucket, install a pair of pad eyes on either side of your tankwell and secure it down to those. Drill a hole in the top, feed through some paracord or something similar, use a carabiner to attach it to the pad eyes.
