Kayak Fishing: My First Roosterfish | #FieldTrips Panama

In this episode, I head to the lump on Day 3, an area where the depths comes up from 300 feet to 30 feet that's known for big fish. The yellowfin tuna are slamming the poppers, but I make a stubborn decision that costs me what could have been an epic day. Then on Day 4, I have ONE species on my mind: roosterfish. With just hours left before our trip comes to an end, I finally get a shot at knocking this species off my bucket list. The question is, can I land it? Since this trip I've been back to Los Buzos three times and have really dialed in the fishery. If you'd like to join me for a week of fishing in this incredible fishery, email info@losbuzos.com for more info. I tried to find the jack after the rooster but it was gone. Either recovered and went down or got eaten by a shark I’d guess. To get sponsored, build a following and tag brands you use and love.

I tried to find her after i released the roosterfish, but she was gone. She either recovered and swam back down, or a shark got her. She got hooked deep by the jig. Unfortunate, but it happens from time to time. Nothing gets wasted in the ocean though.

Yeah, probably. It was gut hooked. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Nothing gets wasted in the ocean; it likely fed either a shark or a cubera snapper.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Um, what? I don’t even understand what you’re saying. Cut the line and leave the hooks in their mouth is the best way to take care of the fish? Don't worry, the yellow-bellied sea snakes won't jump in the boat. They're actually extremely docile when it comes to snakes. However, it still doesn't mean you should play with them, but running your kayaks alongside them to take a look won't leave you in any danger.

+joseph pablo Joseph, I’ll forgive your rude comment because you don’t fully grasp the situation. 2/3 of this Fish goes to the locals in this small Panamanian town, who don’t have the luxuries and conveniences that you do (which I know, because you obviously have internet and/or a smartphone). Inconsiderate? We helped put food on the table for a number of kids that may or may not have otherwise. Perhaps ask questions in the future to cure your ignorance of the circumstances before assuming the worst. Thanks for watching!

That red rod with the spiral wrap looks great! I guess it's a custom. What blank did you built it off?
Ny Jeep Adventurer
Ny Jeep Adventurer - 6 years ago
Oh OK. I'm organizing a tournament for the kayak fishing club I am in and we were looking to give out a few rods as prizes for top angler and biggest fish. We are all fishing a lot of the same stuff, and that rod looked rad, so I was thinking of building something like it as a prize. I am currently trying to get Seeker Rods to contact me concerning their new "beacon" series of kayak rods and blanks which are a bright reddish orange color, kinda like what you had there.
Robert Field

What rod and reel are you using for your spinning setup?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Kiah Wells umm I actually lost all those spinning setups during a badly timed flip offshore. I use Penn stuff mostly for saltwater spinning. Penn Conflict on a Bluewater Carnage 2 for jigging. Penn Battle series is solid and affordable, Penn Slammer is super solid but pricey

Shane Reutzel - 6 years ago
One thing I notice is that you dangle your foot off the side of your yak a lot. Before I went to Maui a couple years ago, I heard a story of a guy doing the same thing and his foot was bit off by a shark and he bled out and died. Don't want that to happen to you :)
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Shane Reutzel yep I heard about that guy too. A tiger shark bit his foot. I also heard he was chumming at the time. Not a great idea. I do pay attention to my surroundings but I think I'd have a better chance of getting struck by lightning at the same instant I won the lottery. Now when I have a frantic fish next to the boat, I am careful to keep my arms and legs inside the vehicle haha.

Perfect response!
I see many youtubers respond to hate coments by saying if you dont like you shouldn't watch, but what they dont realize is that a new viewer can only determine wether they like content or not by watching it and giving it a chance. I personally enjoyed the video, and dont feel bad about that jack, it is as important as a bonita, and bonita are used for bait, besides you might have made a sharks day.

Great vid, happy you got that rooster finally, but what about that jack you just sorta abandoned.... you never showed if you actually took care of that fish, and it looked pretty not good when it was floating away.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Fumbling Through because there was nothing to show. After I released the rooster I spent 20 minutes looking for it but never found it. Not sure if it went down or a shark got it or what. Unfortunate, but it happens. Anyone that fishes semi-regularly gut-hooks a fish now and then. Hopefully he swam off. If not, obviously they aren't endangered out there, and a shark got an easy meal. Circle of life!

The Bowser Journal - 6 years ago
Good points to ponder. I actually worry more about other boaters not seeing me when I am on the water.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Sure I worry about it. Being in a plastic kayak helps lower the already astronomical odds. You should be more concerned about getting T-boned headed to work than struck by lightning. I don't spend my energy worrying about those 1 in a million things... too many real concerns to worry about in this world!

Robert ,

your videos are awesome man, listen am a fan of the way you film the fishing trip, But here in Egypt is not that easy to do the same, However, my name is Adham and am preparing my self to make some clips by my Chanel t help the Egyptians who likes to fish by some videos like yours, and I just got a GoPro Hero 4 silver, and I do have a question cause my GoPro is always sd error , it sucks , So do you have any tips to fix that as I can see you are using GoPro every time :D ,

And actually, I don have the finance at the moment to get that expensive new supported card as I have spent the money to get the camera :D

I just need one tip to fix that error.

what do you think :D?

thank you,
Adham Fahmy

Robert Field - 6 years ago
Thank you Adham! I get SD error sometimes too. GoPros can be very frustrating. My best advice would be to contact GoPro and maybe claim warranty. I don't know how to fix it. I do know that some SD cards are not fast enough for the GoPro. You need a "Class 10" SD card. Search that on Google and you can learn about it and make sure your SD card is Class 10. Hope that helps!

Very entertaining to watch. Y'all are crazy fishing in that storm. Call me a wimp but I've seen too many aftermath pictures of lightning striking rods to make me stay home on rainy days. King Kong I got zapped by lightning from my rod on a stormy day 3 times and my friends also got zapped. just by throwing my jig in the water when lighting was falling alot in the sea. Looks like the water was charged or something. The current travelled all the uo through the braid to the rod

mark anthony bautista - 6 years ago
yeah! accident happens all the time, nice rooster fish though. hehehe! for almost 4 months fishing (port and small boat fishing) haven't try to land a big fish hahah! i tried jigging two weeks ago i hooked one using 150g lure (it's kinda big i guess) but unfortunately the leader snaps to my main line after 3 minutes of fighting haha! lesson learned, perfect knot is important when jigging. hopefully i can get one :)
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
It swallowed the jig too deep, got hooked in the gut, and it was a longer fight. I wanted to go grab him and revive him once I realized he wasn't going down, but the rooster hit and I couldn't get over there. By the time I landed the rooster I couldn't find him, not sure if he went down, got eaten by a shark or just drifted too far to find him. Always sad when a fish dies on accident, but it happens now and then. I Was using 50# fluoro leader tied to 40# braid tied with a modified albright knot. Double up the braid using a bimini twist or spider hitch first.

ARE YOU KEEPING THE FISH UR STABBING SPEARING ECT ECT ?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
First off, I didn't "spear" any fish. The fish that I gaffed were kept. Of course they were. I kept the cero mackerel and we keep most of the tuna, we had 16 mouths to feed. Notice that the jack crevalles I didn't gaff; I was releasing them because we don't like the way they taste. I wasted zero fish except for one jack crevalle that died from too long of a fight. It happens now and then. I do what I can to avoid it, but sometimes the fish doesn't survive. It swallowed the jig deep and got hooked in the gut. I can't control that. I'm sorry that it upset you, but thanks for watching, DeficatingBum.

Oh man, are you kidding with the whole "won't be as good as a team" you do just as good and at times definitely better than teams of producers.

I really appreciate that bud. I'm self taught thru Google, haha. I have a Masters in Finance but when I started filming my fishing trips, it didn't take long before I fell in love with the whole process. Being a one man show is tough, and I'll never be able to match the production quality that a team can, it's fun and it means I get to do different stuff every day and control the whole process. It's been a learning experience and I have a long way to go still. Enjoying the ride though. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!

Good job man, I absolutely love it, and even though most of the time the music is the same you put it in at the right moments and it fits so good every single time. It's really good quality editing that you've done. The camera angles are also well done in my opinion.

Thanks! Yes, I edit all my own stuff. I did just hire my first intern that has helped me with a few videos, like the Ladder Shark Fishing video. But just about everything else I edited.
