Kayak Fishing: Offshore Trip Gone Wrong - Part 2

GO CHECK OUT PART 1 IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crnHUx... This is Part 2 from an incredible offshore kayak fishing trip that I went on over the 4th of July. It was my first time going deep sea fishing in the kayak, and it was an experience I will never forget. In Part 2 we head back out to the Mayan Princess oil rigs off Corpus Christi, TX. The target: torpedoes with razor sharp teeth called king mackerel, or kingfish. I would go on to land 7 of them my first time targeting them. SUCH a blast getting towed around in the kayak by these fish. Check it out. Be sure to watch it to the end for a preview of Part 3... Robert Field Seems like no matter what a video's content is someone always has to be negative about something sad. People should try to focus on the good and not the negative i had everything stolen when my family just went away on a family trip. Broke into my storage and took everything all my fishing gear rods reels everything even my new kayak i used couple of times . But im trying not to think negative even though it's crushing me took me forever to save years i have a family so most of my money goes towards taking care of my kids and wife. I have been reaching out to certain companies maybe i will be able to get some gear to catch fall run of stripers . Sorry for the rant i got off subject lol . Just hate how people treat others so rude when all your doing is trying to entertain and educate others have a good day and stay safe

If you're gonna go sharking, get a pair of bolt cutters. Fishing hooks in particular can harbor flesh eating bacteria that will kill a shark, or any fish, slowly and painfully. I've seen this on plenty of dives. Besides that, it's just bad practice to leave a hook in a fish's mouth, causing unnecessary irritation and torment (or just danger if it's set deep). If you really can't get it out on your own, get a good pair of diamond tip bolt cutters, especially if you're going sharking. Don't just cut the line. Sharks are some of the most beautiful fish out there, and their populations are already under duress. Don't make it worse for them or those of us who want to fish for them responsibly.

+Robert Field Wouldn't be so confident that you saved its life, but I'm glad you admit that you made mistakes. Here's to a future of more responsible fishing.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
I've addressed this point countless times. I addressed it in the video description. We all make mistakes. Bolt cutters are a great idea, but now I pinch down the barbs to make hook removal easier. In that moment, though, I saved that shark's life by not continuing to try and remove the hook. I'm not sure how you've seen plenty of sharks dying slowly and painfully from bacteria due to shark wounds, but I know I've seen dozens of sharks going about business as usual with hooks in their mouths. Of course this is not ideal, but superior to holding the shark out of the water for 10 minutes trying to remove the hook if you can't get it out. Thanks for the feedback and the tip, and thanks for watching.

hey mate great vid, they are Spanish mackeral tho
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Zac Hearne thanks man, but no, they're not. In Australia and New Zealand, you guys call them Spanish mackerel. Here in the States, those are king mackerel. I believe they're slightly different genetically, but this is a common confusion between our countries. Basically the same fish as far as I can tell, but you guys call them something different. For us, spanish mackerel look similar but are about half that size and have yellow spots instead of light vertical bars. Again, not sure if those are differences in slang or if they're actually different species with the same name.

How much did you invest into all your gear? If you don't mind answering :)
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Cameron Fell oh man, that's hard to estimate. Too much. Luckily I work with a number of brands that help me with discounts or free gear in exchange for promotion. I don't do that with any products that I didn't pay full price for originally, though. If I didn't love it to begin with, I won't promote it. But all around for a setup like I have here I think you could expect to spend about $4,000 (the kayak was $2,300 and the new models of it are $2,500).

Just watched you catch a shark and leave in the hook. Youre a dirtbag. Kill yourself.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+TannerMiller I tried to get it out but couldn't, their skin is like thick leather. If I had kept trying, it would have died from leaving it out of the water, so I made the decision to cut the line to save its life. That hook rusted out long before you made this comment. Thanks for watching.
Nautical_ Hawk_
Nautical_ Hawk_ - 8 years ago
You must not understand, one hook in saltwater will rust out within 2 days, it doesn't hurt the shark, I know this because I've been shark fishing before, you are supposed to leave the hook in its mouth because one simple move and bam! You have no hand! It won't hurt them at all..

I just had to comment on ur comment. Wow! What a scathing comment. There is absolutely no harm in leaving a hook in a sharks mouth, as long as it's made for salt water. These hooks rust out quickly & cause the shark little to no difficulty or discomfort.

This is not a little kitten. It's brain is more closely related to that of a frog. So, if u move, ur a candidate for lunch & they feel nothing for u. So, its feelings aren't hurt figuratively or literally. In fact, the inside of sharks' mouths are about the least sensitive thing on their bodies. Their teeth feel more.

Shark skin is made up of tiny teeth called denticle's that camouflage the sound they make swimming so they can sneak up on prey & it's also used to make leather. Their tongues & skin will rip the flesh right off of ur body.

Rest assured, these hooks do not harm them. In fact, u may notice they aren't even causing the shark to bleed & they don't even go through to the outside of the sharks' mouths. They mainly spit them, whenever they want to.

Just a question for u. Do u dive with or know anything about shark biology? I do. If u don't do either, u shouldn't criticize this guy. He's actually a shark's best friend in this day & age. He wants to catch & release them. No harm, no foul. By the way, the comments on the third video are not blocked. I commented in the positive on that one too.

jamie fullerton
jamie fullerton - 9 years ago
+FrostuR I totally stand by my comments . When a hook can be removed it should be , doesnt matter if the hook is bronzed or ss . only if you are going to cause excessive damage or stress to the fish should it be left in , for example a deep hooked fish . I don't usually reply to youtube fish welfare "experts" but I feel you could use the help . What happens if a shark stops swimming ? If the hook is left in the shark for 2 weeks to desolve that is 2 weeks of the sharks life where it is at high risk . If it becomes tethered and can swim I doubt it can hold its breath for 2 weeks . Outcome a dead shark . Of the hook could effect the sharks ability to feed . Surely better to remove the hook and eliminate these risks . In your opinion im a moron , well done

Well did you honestly expect him to put his hand in a sharks mouth?
Julia McDonald-Carberry
Julia McDonald-Carberry - 9 years ago
Sorry to disagree with u but this is an unfair comment. Do u fish or know anything about the hooks they use? The hooks they use rust out fairly quickly in salt water & cause the sharks little, if any discomfort or difficulty. The sport this man promotes may actually be the sharks' saving grace, since they are released versus the estimated million plus sharks a yr slaughtered for shark fin soup, their meat & skins.

These are the people who want to preserve sharks & all fishes so they can enjoy the battle of catching them & releasing them. No harm, no foul. I have fished for sharks on shore & still fly fish Trout, Salmon & Steelhead, catch & release. I admire this fellow's integrity & skill. Cool dude.

He's pursuing a hobby that keeps one very fit & interferes w/the environment very little, if at all. Excellent. Hats off.

why use the harpoon if your not keeping the fish"
James Hanna
James Hanna - 9 years ago
the difference between a gaff and harpoon is a gaff is just a sharpend metal hook so you can hook the fish and lift it in. a harpoon is like a spear with backwards facing spikes so when it goes in it doesnt come out without ripping it out
cruhmbles
cruhmbles - 10 years ago

It's a gaff, not a harpoon, and that is a great question. Why WOULD I use a gaff if I wasn't keeping the fish? I did keep that fish, that's why I used it on that one. It was dinner back at camp on the beach.

That is a fantastic question - why would I gaff a fish not to keep it? Did you not just see me release 8 different fish without gaffing them, why would I all of a sudden gaff one randomly for no reason? I did keep it, it's inside the hull of my kayak. Think before you comment bud. I did eat what I killed and the disclaimer was a joke. Lighten up bro.

+Gundog10mm It's very different in FL than in TX. In TX we have to go a lot further than 100 yards because 100 yards out it's about 10 feet deep. In FL they're usually right past the surf.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 10 years ago
Thanks for the kind words brother. No I definitely stop recording, the batteries don't last long enough to go nonstop. I usually make sure I get the launch through the surf, then I'll turn it off until I get a run. As soon as I get a run, I'll click on my camera with one hand while grabbing the rod out of the holder with the other. With the Railblaza Camera Booms, it's one quick motion to swing the camera out into position. If the action is really hot and heavy like it was this day, I'll leave it on in between fish to try and get the rod bend (or hookset if I'm not trolling) on film.  I got lucky this time and was looking up at my rod tip with the headmount camera rolling to get that one shot of the rod bending over early on. I thought it ended up looking pretty awesome!

awesome man, thanks! maybe I will see ya out there! tight lines!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 10 years ago
Yep I use the TigerStik rod, they make a baitcaster and it's heavier duty than the spinning version. I got it at Cabelas, $60. For kings I usually troll two lines, one with fresh ribbonfish on a J hook with two treble stingers (all on 84# test malin wire) and on the other I usually start off with my go-to lure, a Rapala X-Rap Jointed Shad in chrome/black with about 2-3' of that same wire for a leader. I also keep some kind of Rat'L'Trap or something similar tied onto a spinning combo that I can cast real well in case I see topwater action. Usually yank a smack or king out of those boils.

Man are you serious? Don't the fins on the bottom of your yak look like seal, or turtle fins?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 11 years ago
No the sharks weren't there this trip. I actually spent half a day targeting them specifically with no hookups. Somestimes you can't keep them off your line. Just depends. They're one reason why I try to get the fish out of the water as fast as possible. Otherwise you'll often reel in half a kingfish.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 11 years ago
I mostly use Penn 309 reels on UglyStik Tiger rods. 40lb mono main line, 96lb malin single strand wire for my leaders. 2' leader normally, 5' leader on tournament days.
