Kayak Fishing: Surviving the Devil's River

Come along for the journey as Robert Field and three companions embark on a five day kayak fishing and camping trip down the legendary Devil's River. Located in the middle of the desert in deep Southwest Texas, this river is known as one of the most remote, most pristine, and one of the wildest rivers in Texas. With rapids, waterfalls, crystal clear water and some nice largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, this is the adventurous kayak angler's dream destination. Robert walks you through strategies for a successful multi-day kayaking trip, tips and tricks for making your life easier in a remote environment with only the gear you can fit in your kayak, and truly immerses the audience in the experience. These yak paking videos are bad ass. You should check out the Buffalo National River in Arkansas. It is the first national river in the country and is forever protected from being impounded. It is a blue ribbon smallmouth stream. If you are interested go in early spring or late fall to avoid all of the party Crowd. I absolutely enjoy your videos, you are a great ambassador for kayak fishing!

For those types of rapids I'd have gone with a shorter sit-in. Like the Ascend FS10. You're definitely gonna sacrifice fishing stability. But you'll stay in your kayak... and actually have some fun in the rapids. Granted, your choice was better for the long pools. I just prefer mobility in fast moving creeks.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Thanks James! What kayaks would you recommend? Our focus was fishing, so fishing kayaks made the most sense. I don't regret my choice, but to each their own.

Wow, you guys have no respect for whitewater, and Mr Field, you have no idea how to actually paddle a kayak. I can see you are using you arms exclusively without rotating your torso at all. Your elbow should never bend till you're taking the paddle out of the water. This is why Hobie people say "paddle kayaks are too hard", it's because they never learn how to paddle properly.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Gellfex this was like 4 years ago, 8 months after I bought my first kayak. Maybe post up a video on proper paddling form rather than just bashing people on old videos?

Ummm, I struggled to stand. I also had the handle break off as you can see, but mine was a 115, not a 115x. I think they beefed them up. Not much man, just DON'T do what I did and stick your feet out to kick off rocks. Good way to break an ankle. That was a bad move on my part.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
A good paddle is essential man, it makes a huge difference. I use Accent Paddles now. Their fishing paddles extend from 240-260cm so you can dial it in until it's the perfect length. Great quality paddles at a lower price than the bigger name brands. http://www.accentpaddles.com/collections/fishing

Second thought, on the topic of "missed" fish. They're not missed. Anything under 14-15" still counts, even if you quick-release the fish! If big fish throw the hook, they don't count! Geeeez, buddy, didn't anybody teach you the river fishin' rules?! Another thought: If people would've just been courteous enough to dig cat holes and bury their doodoo, that bag rule would've never come along (then again, maybe it's not possible to dig in that terrain???) Remember, fish that throw the hook beside the boat are NOT "getting away" they're QUICK RELEASED!!!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Hahaha quick released, I like that.

No joke dude...about 5 seconds before you said "man, they seem to fight harder here," I was thinking "wow, that is an exceptionally healthy looking fish." The fins don't have any chunks out of them was the first thing that caught my eye.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
I edit on Adobe Premiere, but there are good free programs out there. Google "video editing freeware" and you can find some lists with details. For going down rapids, DON'T stick your feet out like I did here. Use your paddle to brace on either side to slow down and turn. Don't fight the water, work with it. And most importantly, secure everything down in case you flip! If you do flip, go down FEET FIRST. Whatever you do, make sure you don't go down headfirst, that's how people die.

Thank you for an inspiring video, Robert. Very well done! I now want to make the trip sometime. What were the previous posters referring to concerning what goes on here: " I would never spend my 10-07 time there that is for sure..Maybe because I know too well the stuff that goes on in that area" ? I'm assuming he's either prudish, and there's a lot of nude sunbathers :) or....he's talking about illegal movement of drugs or people in the area?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
He's probably referring to drug traffickers, but it's a non-issue. Never heard of anyone having any kind of run-in down there. This river doesn't form the border and it would make a horrible place to try to traffic drugs. It also leads nowhere as you go North.

A 12 volt 4Ah sealed battery weights 3 pounds and can charge multiple USB devices as well as power lights without stopping and making a fire. IMO I am thinking pound for pound it would be more useful than Biofuel alternative.
Art Ashworth
Art Ashworth - 7 years ago
Wow. Thanks. Happy trails.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
I use these types of battery banks as well, but mine are lighter than 3 pounds. The advantage to a biofuel charger is that it is, in theory, unlimited (until the thing kicks the bucket entirely). On longer trips, the BioLite Stove offers a charging solution that would remain useful for weeks or even months, whereas my battery banks charge 8-10 batteries and then become dead weight.

Certainly uses for both styles of chargers, but a biofuel style device definitely has its place. Also, I'm not stopping to make a fire, I'm doing it while sitting around at camp each night. I've got 3-4 hours to kill each night, so it was something to pass the time. Also, I can boil my water for cooking dehydrated meals on the same stove, so it's dual purpose in that manner as well.

The
Devils River is a precious and delicate resource; it cannot sustain very much
human pressure. If you visit be prepared for its remoteness, be educated about
its delicate ecosystem and be aware that it is threatened. Most importantly, be
considerate of the river and the stewards along its banks because without them
it would not be the wild and pristine place it is today. To learn more about
the Devils, its threats and how you can help please visit the Devils River

why are you dragging across rock? Do you get free kayaks or something? Just carry the frigging things. Two people carry each one, go back get the others, etc.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
+sakimano because we have 7-days worth of gear in each one, what you're suggesting would have been 100x more work. And as I stated in the video, this was not my kayak and the shop lent me a demo for this trip for a reason. And afterwards, the kayak was fine. They're more durable than I think you realize. We sometimes drug for 500-1000 yards at a time... making 2 trips for each kayak would not be efficient.

I know you have a Hobie, I'm debating whether or not to buy one... I want to be able to take trips like this, but am caught between the Hobie PA 12, Ocean Kayak Big Game II, Old Town Predator XL (No motor), and the Wilderness Systems Ride 115 MAX. I see two of the kayaks I am caught between on this video and you own an Outback. What are you thoughts on my dilemma?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Isaac Gallatin if your focus is going to be rivers with rapids, a Hobie is not the boat of choice. Hence why I took a Ride 115 instead. Otherwise, I haven't found a more versatile boat than the Outback. I liked the Ride 115 but it didn't blow me away; I wouldn't buy one personally. My biggest piece of advice is to demo before you buy.

Awesome video man, definitely a dream trip. How did you plan the pick up after day five? That's what I always have a problem organizing.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Dakota Ellis I packed heavier than I should have. Anything you don't NEED, shed it. And I mean NEED. Don't use my reasoning, the whole "well what if ____ happens?" It won't. I had about 30 lbs of gear I never touched on the trip. Bring a rod or two, minimal tackle, something to sleep on/in and something to boil water. All the little gadgets and gizmos are unnecessary, and the lighter you are the easier you'll get through rapids.

Loved it, man!  SUbbed.

A couple of questions I would LOVE to see you answer:

1.  Would you please describe for us viewers your worm rig or rigs?

2.  Will you please describe your non-sink setup on your foregrip of your rod?

Thanks!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+John Kugelfischer I was using a 5" senko worm, and you rig the hook through the middle of the worm to make it "wacky" rigged. Gives it a much different action. They also make little rings you can put around the worm that you slip the hook through instead of through the worm itself, which helps them hold up better so you can catch multiple fish on each.

The floats on the rod are just called rod floats, I think I found them on Amazon. Come in packs of 3.

what bait do you think is the best to catch bass? I mainly use a finese worm but that doesn't always work
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Matt Bass no bait "always works" brother, and the best bait to catch bass is different for every body of water and every day of the year. Just takes time on the water to learn what's effective in different situations. Lots of guides and videos out there on how to bass fish, but in my experience, none of them made me any better at fishing. Fishing made me better at fishing. There are some rules of thumbs: dark colors in stained water or cloudy days, lighter line in clearer water, baits with flash or vibration when it's windy, raining, and/or dark. Good luck brother!

Did you use an external mic on your GoPros at all?  Awesome video man!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
+Dillon Huffman nope. I use the headmount for narrations. It will pick up your voice better than the camera facing you. Then I take the audio layer from the headmount, the video layer from the camera facing me, and matched the audio to my lips. Sounds tedious but once you do it a few times you get fast at it. Now I use an external audio recorder with a lav mic clipped to my collar, but I still have to layer that audio under the GoPro video in the editing software and match it to my lips moving. Hope that helps bud.

+The River Giveth Exactly. A few irresponsible visitors ruined it for the rest of us. They have to be strict (they enforce these laws very seriously) in order to appease the landowners, who don't want people visiting their river (and so close to their property) at all. I obeyed the law because if I don't, I'm contributing to the problem, and giving the landowners more ammunition to ban visitors altogether. They've been pushing for that for decades. I don't blame them, but I also don't want them to win. This is a special place and people deserve to be able to experience it.

Nice video, Robert. That trip looked like a blast - wish I could have tagged along. The rapids must have been fun. I haven't encountered too many of those on my trips.  I was amused to see you and I use the same 3-GoPro system, although I've been too nervous to submerge one. Too bad the GoPro's have poor audio once you attach the waterproof back door on the casing - I have the same problem. I opted for music-only audio until I come up with a better mic system. Check out my "Anglers Away" videos if you like, to see some Canadian Smallmouth. Hope to see you on the water some day!

Robert,
Great video.  I've been running the Devil's since 1991.  No one knew about it back then.  It was great.  You could float for days and see no one. Only fish, turkey, and deer.  With that in mind, it pains me to see you post a video treaspassing.  As you have since found out, the landowners take trespassing very seriously.  Nothing announces your presence on their property like a nice warm glowing campfire.  There's more people on the river now and everyone needs to maintain a light touch.  No fires to beacon your presence.  No scorch marks on the rocks to show the landowners where you camped.   And definitely don't post videos of yourself trespassing.  It won't be long and they will shut this down permanently for everyone.
Edwin Quintero
Edwin Quintero - 9 years ago
+Robert Field Hi Robert, Great video! i was just going to ask if you were given any trouble by landowners when camping on this 5 day trip? how did you prepare your self for this trip if you don't mind telling "camp wise" im planning a weeklong trip down the devils river as well. any tips would be greatly appreciated, great video again.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
There is no trespassing in this video, and I have confirmation on that from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The fires we built was on rock that is underwater whenever it's not in drought conditions like it is now. You're permitted to camp in the river gradient boundary; that belongs to the people of the State of Texas.

Thanks for the kind words man, I appreciate it. I don't think Cineform Studio would give better slow-mo than Adobe Premiere. Premiere is one of the top programs you can buy. To get smoother slow-mo shots I would need to shoot in a higher FPS than 30, which kills the battery life. On a 5-day trip I couldn't afford to do that.

Depends on the sit-on-top, but usually not very. Just some spray if the wind is bad. Obviously rapids like in this video are a different story... I got pretty wet. SoTs are not made for rapids. I use the Railblaza Camera Boom 600s for the GoPros. Best booms money can buy man. They rotate any way you can imagine and all the Railblaza parts fit together like legos, so I can add fixed and rotating extenders to get the exact distance and angle I want. Easy to install, come with stainless hardware, etc. etc. My videos improved tremendously after I got them.

awesome video, I can't believe they won't let you leave your poo out there!! thats a little overboard. I would love to see those fish jumping in slow mo at 120fps too!!
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
Yeah, obviously my camera equipment is limited to GoPros since I'm filming myself, I often get wet, and I have to be able to mount them to a floating piece of plastic. If you want to be my camera man, I've got the gear to shoot 120fps. :)

HAHA yeah that is true i forgot that its different down there
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
Yeah, but stories of landowners pulling guns on paddlers are commonplace. They don't want us on "their" river, so I probably wouldn't have gone up there even if I needed to. Although, 95% of those houses looked empty. Most are just vacation homes.

Working on it, sir! Unfortunately for now this is just a hobby, so "real life" gets in the way most of the time. My next video is another long one and will be out by the end of the month. Subscribe to catch it when it airs!

What settings did you have set on your Go Pro. 1080p? What FPS?
and if you dont mind me asking, what Micro SD do you use?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
I shoot in 1080p 30fps usually and use 32GB micro SDs. If you have the cameras for 60fps it's better, but since some of mine do and some don't, weaving the footage together can screw things up. So I just set 'em all to 30. That also saves battery life.

Would love to do what you did for 5 days would be awesome.  Did you actually keep any fish for like meals etc?  Thanks for awesome looking adventure, good commentary and pleasant music.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
Man, I didn't keep any fish and I regretted it. I wish I had kept just one for the experience. I'm mostly a catch and release guy, though. We thought there was going to be a fire ban so we hadn't planned on keeping fish, so no filet knife or anything. In hindsight, I regret it.

Robert.  Thanks for the video.  I have hunted along the Devils River but have never fished it.  I did make a similar float trip down the Pecos River from Pandale to Langtry with a bunch of other idiots on spring break from college (in 1980!!).  We did it in canoes instead of kayaks but man did you bring out some vivid memories.  Especially about how accurate you were of the water (not being very warm!!!) and about the rock ledge bed not being very soft! Thanks to you I am already planning a trip like yours with my son (27) and daughter (18) in kayaks this time.
Thanks for the suggestion.

That's so great to hear, Bobby! The main reason I produce these videos is to help grow the sport, so that's music to my ears. I'm sure y'all will have a blast... the Pecos is next on my list!

It was at 50, not 5, haha. Getting there... oh well. If I was worried about view count I would've made it 5 minutes long. I produced a longer one so I could have something I could be proud of. I'll make up the views on some shorter videos this summer. Thanks for watching!

At age 75 and overweight, watching your marvelous video is the closest I believe I can come to enjoying the one river I would love to experience.  I will have to get my enjoyment vicariously, however, and limit my yaking to less difficult Texas Hill Country rivers.  Thanks for sharing your great adventure.  I learned much from your video - some great equipment, and much better than my low scale equipment.

Awesome video.  I love bass fishing and I used to whitewater kayak.  I would love to do this, it just looks like it would cost a fortune to get set up for it.  Can you rent these?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
You can definitely rent kayaks but they aren't going to be rigged out like mine obviously. It doesn't necessarily cost a fortune to get set up for this but I mean just like any sport, if you're going to try and buy all the gear for a 5-day trip doing a completely new hobby, it's going to cost some dough. I didn't buy too much for this trip, I had most of it already.

Just as great, maybe even better the second time around.
Really too bad you lost all the views from the first one though.

Sad and petty ... I guess sort of like them.

+Eden 2.0 about where we camped. The landowners there don't want videos like this out there because they don't want the place to increase in popularity. I don't blame them. A few irresponsible visitors really ruin it for the rest of us. I hoped to use this video for good to show people how special the Devils River is and hopefully influence people to help protect it.

Got sidetracked there, but basically they said we were trespassing by camping too far off the river in one of our camp locations. The person who called in the complaint didn't even own that land, they just asked that my video be taken down or I be prosecuted. In the end I worked with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, fixed my video, and accepted an official warning. They told me that other than that mistake, they really enjoyed my video.

+Sean McGee Oh, no, actually that was a state park and no alcohol allowed in Texas State Parks. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept said they loved the video and would have let it slide, but since there was a complaint, they had to take action.
Sean McGee

Is it because it was glass?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
+Sean McGee The real problem is that a few jackasses ruin it for the rest of us when they do this float and leave trash everywhere. They left a sour taste in the landowners' mouths that I don't think they'll ever let go of.
Sean McGee
Sean McGee - 9 years ago
+Robert Field The WHISKEY? I would've left that in. Idiots. If the landowners were more respectful, maybe the paddlers would be motivated to respect in return.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 9 years ago
The landowners on the Devil's River have been trying to restrict paddlers' access to the river for decades, so they'll use anything they can as ammunition against us. That is why I took it down immediately, to not give them any more reason to keep us off this incredible water. I took down the "offensive" parts (one of our campsites and the mini bottle of whiskey I had to celebrate at the end) and added in some new footage to appease them.
