Kayak Fishing: Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo & Big Jacks | #FieldTrips Panama

This is the first episode in an upcoming series from my travels to Los Buzos Resort on the Pacific coast of Panama. I'm working with the lodge and heading out there 3-4 times a year to guide groups of anglers for bucket list species from a kayak or panga. This episode follows me on my very first trip to the lodge. It's a story that's full of ups and downs as I work to figure out the fishery off Panama’s Pacific coast. Since this trip I've been back three times and have really dialed in the fishery. If you'd like to join me for a week of fishing in this incredible fishery, email info@losbuzos.com for more info. Check out the amazing coolers we're using on the trip at http://www.bisoncoolers.com and you can get all of our kayak fishing accessories at http://www.railblaza.com and http://www.yak-gear.com. On a trip to the Cortez I was fishing flat falls and Krocs with a 3 ft flouro leader to spectra via a swivel. I lost 5 jigs in a row on the sink until I realized the Sierra were attacking the swivel. Only connection knots from now on.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Nicholas Darracq yep! We try to avoid swivels whenever possible. Spro makes some quality swivels that are really small for their weight rating. I use those when I have to.

What the fuck did you kill the baby for? I don't know if it's because I'm British and we have strict rules on fish size, or because I know that the fish could've grown to be 100lb +
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Archie Archibald because we were feeding about 40 mouths in the town there. They don't have all the luxuries you and I have or get to pick and choose where their meals come from. Releasing that fish might mean a kid goes hungry there. That fact aside, I don't think a lone kayak angler harvesting a single juvenile yellowfin is going to hurt the population. If you want to gripe at someone, go protest the Japanese netting tuna of all sizes by the millions. Your efforts would be more impactful on that front. Thanks for watching.

That's not cool to take the 5 pound YFT you should have released him so he could grow bigger
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Tim Lane I don't think one kayaker taking a juvenile tuna is going to harm the population. We had about 40 mouths to feed as we did what we could to help the people that live there in the rainforest. The locals there don't have the luxuries and privilege that you do, releasing that fish could mean their kids go hungry. Take your misplaced judgements elsewhere.

Robert Field

Most of my reels that I use out there have 50, 65, or 80 pound braid as the mainline. Offshore in the states I'll use 65, 40 and possibly 30 for like mahi or kings.

are you kidding, they were gonna eat it anyway and would you rather kill it instantly with the gaff or let it die slowly from not being in the water
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
+Isaac Ford pain? When a big sharp object goes through an animal's brain, it doesn't feel pain. It was instant. If you're against harvesting animals to feed my group and the local Panamanians who don't have the luxuries you have, then you shouldn't be watching fishing videos. Thanks for watching and take care.

That isn't a sound effect, that's the clicker on my reel! I leave it on sometimes when I'm filming so that the audience can hear when the fish is running, etc.

I love those Seiglers man, what's your budget? If you want the best rod for under $100, check out the Ugly Stik Tiger Stik. It's not the prettiest rod out there but it's $60, will never break and you can't get a better rod for less than $150 in my opinion.

We offer trips at Los Buzos year-round except October and November when the surf gets really gnarly. The fishing is incredible all year, although some species are seasonal. I'll be back in August hosting a group trip, January, probably again next June/July. I'm going 3-4 times a year. If you're going offshore, I'd recommend the Outback. The Revo is definitely faster, but the Outback is a lot more stable, which is good when you're hooked up to a big fish. Also much easier to stand in when fishing inshore.

How do you find fishing places for beginners??
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Man, just head to the water! If you're a beginner there's new fish to figure out all over the place. I'm still a rookie myself really... I've only been fishing about 6 years. Just do a little research, ask people in the area for some tips, but just start chunking lures in the nearest lake or river and you'll start getting bites. See if you can find a Facebook group or forum from your area and go fishing with someone. That's the fastest way to learn. I met up with some great anglers from www.texasfishingforum.com when I first started and it helped a lot. Hope that helps man!

have you ever tipped over and had to re enter in open water? any advice?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Yes I have man, multiple times. I'm sort of infamous for a video on here where I caught my first shark and flipped. My advice is simple: practice. It's summer time so head out on your kayak with zero gear on it. Flip it over. Get back in. Do it 3 or 5 or 7 or however many times until you feel comfortable doing it. The easiest way to flip a kayak right-side-up is to go to the side, directly in the middle, and throw your body up and across the bottom of your boat. Grab the opposite gunnel and thrust backwards with all your weight. The boat will pop right over. Then to get in, again throw your body up over the seat and grab the opposite gunnel. Basically belly down on the seat. Swing your legs over and you're in. You can search YouTube for some demo videos too.
Sunshine Sunny
Sunshine Sunny - 6 years ago
you dont mind having your feet in the water? ive seen a news report of a kayak fisherman in hawaii that was doing that and a shark took his foot off and he died.......... no fear? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sYrrpy56xE
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
Yeah I know about him. The only reported fatal shark attack on a kayak angler that I've ever heard of. Sad for sure, I believe it was a Tiger. I heard he was chumming and dangling his feet in the water. But I'm not sure anyone was there, so who knows. I still think I have a better chance of getting struck by lightning. You'll see in episode 3 or 4 (they'll come later this year) a "Sharknado" comes through Panama. We have one day where they're EVERYWHERE. I caught like 7 and lost countless baits. Then the next day, all gone again and back to normal. The ocean is a cool and mysterious place man.
Sunshine Sunny
Sunshine Sunny - 6 years ago
where do you keep the fish after you catch it? a fish bag? what fish bag do you recommend?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
On this trip I kept them in my Bison Coolers Soft Pak, but really big fish went into the panga. I do have a fish bag too. They tend to rip because of fish teeth, so I just buy inexpensive ones. I think mine is Native brand, but it was still like $120.

Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
That's called acid wrap or spiral wrap. It moves the line down below the blank, which theoretically puts less stress on the blank (up for debate I suppose) but it pulls the pressure down from below, which keeps your reel sitting straight up. With the guides on top, the blank is being pushed down instead of pulled, so the rod wants to spin around and your reel with it. So without realizing it, your wrist is constantly fighting that torque or twisting motion, which fatigues you faster. I was skeptical before I tried one, but I'll never go back. I like it better. But plenty of people don't. Worth trying out though! If we ever fish together you can borrow mine for the day.

Dont know exactly what they go for but for Bonita and other smaller baits fish like that; maybe a big sabiki rig? Great way to catch certain bait fish.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
We get them nowadays on small jigs, like 10-30 grams. XPS Freestyle Jig is a readily available one at Bass Pro, but my favorite are by MajorCraft. The bonita are too big for sabikis, they'll break em off every time. We do use sabikis though! They're good for catching little snapper and grouper and that we'll drop down on the reef live.

Curious as to why you were using J hooks instead of circle. I would think a circle Hook could mitigate the tooth factorI use them for everything and nothing but glowing reports. Looking forward to your next video. Might even book a trip with you.

Dr Gary
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
It just depends on what you're targeting. Typically in my experience, J hooks offer a better hook-up ratio, but tend to kill the fish more often than not. These days at Los Buzos I'm typically running circle hooks on live bait. Both have their applications for sure. You're spot on in that circles help avoid a fish's teeth. At that point on my first day, I didn't know toothy fish would be a problem. All part of the learning experience! If you want more info on a trip to Los Buzos, it's super affordable and we've really dialed in the fishery now. If you're interested in learning more, shoot an email to info (at) losbuzos (dot) com
