Kayak Fishing for River Monsters - GIANT Alligator Gar

In my latest episode, I'm teaming up with Bubba Bedre from Garzilla Guide Service (http://www.garfishingguide.com) to try and tackle one of the world's true river monsters: giant alligator gar from his kayak. Bubba is a world renowned alligator gar guide who has put the likes of Jeremy Wade on monster gator gar during an episode of River Monsters on Animal Planet. Now Bubba will be showing me the ropes to see if I can wrangle in a few of these prehistoric beasts from a small plastic boat. With the Trinity River at flood stage and these fish growing in excess of 200 pounds, I'm in for one of the greatest challenges of my fishing career. To get the same tough-as-nails, American made coolers that I'm using in this film, check out Bison Coolers (http://www.bisoncoolers.com) and use code YAKFISHTV for $15 off any hard cooler they make. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Me on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/RF_FBook Instagram → http://bit.ly/RF_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/RF_Tweet Google+ → http://bit.ly/RF_G-Plus ▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow YakFish TV on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/YFTV_FB Instagram→ http://bit.ly/YFTV_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/YFTV_Tweet Website → http://www.yakfish.tv ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Favorite Brands ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ http://www.nrs.com http://www.accentpaddles.com http://www.railblaza.com http://www.fishbrain.com http://www.yak-gear.com ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Shop the Gear I Use! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Main Camera → http://bit.ly/RJF_DSLR Action Cameras → http://bit.ly/RJF_GoPro5 Editing Software → http://bit.ly/RJF_Editing Editing Computer → http://bit.ly/RJF_PC Drone → http://bit.ly/RJF_Drone Audio Recorder → http://bit.ly/RJF_Audio Paddle → http://bit.ly/RJF_Paddle Life Jacket → http://bit.ly/RJF_Chinook Knife → http://bit.ly/RJF_Co-Pilot Gear Crate → http://bit.ly/RJF_Ambush Camera Boom → http://bit.ly/RJF_Boom Rod Holder → http://bit.ly/RJF_RodHolder Visibility Kit → http://bit.ly/RJF_Visibility Rod Leashes → http://bit.ly/RJF_Leashes Fish Finder Battery → http://bit.ly/RJF_Nocqua VHF Radio → http://bit.ly/RJF_VHF

What was the point of fishing from a kayak 5 ft away from the bank? The one you hooked at 10:00 you gut hooked it and it was pissing blood everywhere, use a circle hook? You couldn't lasso it for shit, and then you stand on top of it whilst its thrashing nearly injuring yourself and the fish...have some respect for the fish if you are planning to release it.
Robert Field

Post up a video demonstrating how to handle a 100+ pound alligator gar from a kayak. I look forward to learning how to fish from you!

There's a big spot where people are always camping out just off of hwy 105 when you are coming out of Cleveland headed into Moss Hill ... there's a series of sand bars like 5-6 when the water levels are extremely low (good luck now w/ all of this rain). Never visited them, but they were always parties and families camped out down there just off of the hwy.

Just be careful, most of it is private property. Your best bet to be legal is to find a sandbar island.

What a great video. Robert, out of curiosity, do you think you could've landed those bigger ones without the pedal drive and had to rely on your paddle? It seems the current, etc. would have made it nearly impossible.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
No, if I hadn't had the pedals, I would have rescheduled this trip. The pedals were key in controlling these fish with the river flowing so fast.

I just read this... https://www.yahoo.com/news/huge-once-hated-fish-now-seen-weapon-against-053052931.html  I caught an alligator gar here recently in Buchanan in the highland lakes here in Texas, another fishermen reported catching one in the San Jacinto. I caught mine on a senko lure and released the fish. It was approximately 2ft long as other fisherman reported his to be nominally the same size. Invasive fish like Asian carp and Snakehead are also a threat to Texas fishing... Alligator Gar just may be the answer to control those invasive populations... Please keep us informed and I would like to hear more info on using Gar to control snake head populations as well.

They have a very slow rate of reproduction; they only spawn every few years if the conditions are perfect, even less often if not. We just had a spawn last year thanks to all the flooding we've had, reportedly the first spawn in almost a decade. But they range from south Texas to Alabama that I know of. Bowfishermen are their worst enemy.

It can be tough to keep up with sometimes but I try my best to answer every single comment on my channel. I appreciate everyone who watches my videos, so the least I can do is reply when you guys take the time to watch and comment.

since the comments where disabled on the offshore gone wrong part 3 was disabled, did you really have to leave that hook in that second sharks mouth ???
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
As I stated in the video description on that video, I had tried to remove the hook for about 5 minutes but couldn't get it out. Ultimately I decided that leaving the shark out of the water any longer would kill the fish. That hook rusted out long before you made this comment. It was a mistake I made on my first shark, and since then I've learned to pinch down the barbs so I can remove them, and I even demonstrate that in my other shark video. So, to answer your question, yes, I really had to leave the hook in that shark's mouth to save its life at that point. Thanks for watching.

Robert, your videos are always awesome and have been a real inspiration for me. I got my first 6ft sturgeon from the yak the other day and he was towing me like that sailfish you caught, now I'm hooked on big game! Maybe you could check my sturgeon video out and let me know what you think.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
Thanks for the kind words brother! I just watched it, good stuff! Couple suggestions: instead of adding text to explain stuff, record yourself talking about it and layer that audio under the video. People connect to human voices, it'll make people feel like they know you and make them more likely to subscribe. Also, when YouTube says "Your video is shaky, do you want us to fix it?" Click NO. It gives it a weird distortion. Not sure if you can undo it. And third: less is more. Some of the segments are a bit long when you're fighting it. Try to shorten it down, leave the audience wanting more. All in all great first video though, and I actually have plans to chase sturgeon in that same river with the guys at NRS. Got me excited to get up there!

+Robert Field No the Kayak shark catch. Ive been diving for years and always wondered what type of person left their hooks in these amazing creatures, I find it a shame as you obviously love the sport but disrespect the process in a way.

Cool video! I'm from SE Michigan and I was sorry to miss you at Kent Lake for the KATS. I just fished their last weekend and caught a few fish. I saw HUNDREDS of vacated bass beds along the SW end of the lake by I96. If you ever wanted to come back for the spawn that seems to be a good spot with hard bottom. Keep up the great videos.

+Robert Field hard to get used to reeling in big fish in a kayak. Its like bow hunting vs rifle hunting
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
I'm sure that'd work. Being in a kayak is much more forgiving on your gear, since your kayak will move before your rod or reel give usually.

awesome catch! would love to catch gar up here in Wisconsin. always see them roaming around while bass fishing. But don't have the right set-up for them.
bassmaster1255
bassmaster1255 - 8 years ago
Yeah, they are spotted and longnose. I always try to dish with a steel leader for the fact then northerns like to destroy your bass lures. That good to know, they do.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 8 years ago
Up there it's probably longnose and spotted gar. I don't think gator gar venture that far north. Those still get big and are a blast to catch though! I've caught a 49" longnose gar on bass gear and it fought like a tank.
