I just made some outriggers for my kayak. They did interfere with paddling. I had designed them in too close to the side of the kayak. I kept hitting the floats with the paddle unless I held the paddle out at arms length and paddled that way. This caused some arm soreness today. I have since replaced the one foot sections with two foot sections. This should put the floats out farther from the kayak and give me more room to paddle. I'll be finding out tomorrow.

johnny popper the closer designs tend to favour the pedal kayaks like hobie and such.

Either send them further back, or like you said go wider

Doesn't having the outrigger so close behind the seat interfere with paddling?

If you paddle to keep the boat in a straight line - the power stroke paddle is vertical. From left to right the top hand (left) passes in front of the eyes - right hand extended to begin the stroke. The stroke ends at the rear of your butt - stroke out and away for the recovery. If you stroke more to the rear it is wasted and actually negates the stroke.
Only time you would stroke to interfere with stabilizers is a wide sweep for a tighter turn of the boat.

just made some outriggers on the cheap with pvc pipe, a couple pvc T's and a bunch of swimming noodles i got at the dollar store i'm gonna ratchet strap it to the kayak the whole thing costs about 20 bucks i want to experiment with boom lengths, and amount of floatation needed before i build one like yours, thanks for posting

My Prowler is 29" wide. From the actual edge of the yak to the center of the outriggers is 30". I'd say stay somewhere between 30"-34".

Hey Mo Im in the process of building outriggers and a back rest kinda like a standnfish setup just wondering how far out you put your outriggers from the edge of the yak, my yak is 32" wide but I still feel a little tippy when using my 12' jig'n pole LOL.....

I haven't been using this kayak much. I got a new Hobie PA 14. I don't have any video but I have stood and fished out of it with no issues.

The Prowler is only 29" wide so it is not the most stable if you want to stand. I dont think the livewell effected the "tippiness" of the yak.

sweetsilage, I use Cabela's sealed 12 volt batteries and I have never ran one down on the water. I do spread my power usage out however. I have a Hobie Pro Angler and it has 3 batteries used for different things. One battery is dedicated for a fishfinder/GPS. The second operates the livewell with submersible light. The third is a backup but is hooked up to a dual USB charger and deck lighting. When I get home I hook all the batteries to a trickle charger. I made the outriggers so I can stand up

Like your rig. Do got a (?) or 2. I am assumeing u must use a battery for your baitbox like a sealed wetcell like what u c on a motorcycle. How often must u charge the thing? Also your outriggers.. Did u add them because the yak is a little unstable or did the baitbox make it unstable or topheavy?

Looks great Carl, I know what your talking about hard to reach been there too I feel your pain. The choice for your stabilizer anchor is great to position any angle needed. Another great project thank for sharing this video lots of work and information !!!!! Thumbs up Carl : )
