Kayak Tool Storage Fail - Magnetic Tape

Kayak tool storage is always an issue within the constrained dimensions of the typical fishing kayak. Earlier, I showed how to make a kayak tool caddy or kayak toolbar out of PVC and velcro. I try to achieve the same thing by using magnetic tape to make a kayak tool organizer. I use a mechanics tray (magnetic tray for holding screws and bolts) to hold light tools and lures/hooks. Attached to the deck with 1/4" stainless bolt and a fender washer (sit inside kayak).

I would think the magnetic strip used for kitchens knives would work pretty well?

I use ceramic magnets. Glue them on with marine Goop.

Why don't you get a magnetic strip that you can get on the back of L plates to stick on to the cars. Then use adhesive stick that to where you want it and that will hold your knives and scissors.

I would suggest going to the hardware store and buying some rare Earth magnets. They are a little more expensive but will definitely be strong enough to hold your knife and scissors.

Yes. That is really strong and I purchased one a few years ago to use for this purpose. The problem is kayak hulls and interiors are usually curved. I could not find a place to mount it where it would be comfortable. It has to be in the interior and not mounted to a utility track since anything on the track might be knocked overboard. If somebody has a straight run, it would work - thanks for bringing this up.

I use a strip of magnetic tape on my yaks dashboard as a collection spot for hooks and flys, but not vertical. Gravity is a nice assist to the weak tape.

That would certainly work for light objects. Good use!

A lot of the Chinese "stainless steel" is low grade stainless, and will stick to a decent magnet. For instance, I just had to replace a "stainless" shower caddy pole that was rusting. I tried some of that magnetic tape on the wall above my bench with the same results you got. I put some on the bench surface at the rear just to hold nuts and bolts and parts during disassembly when I'm working on something. It works fine for that.

There is a magnetic bar I used to attach to the front of vacuum cleaners to pick up metal items as janitors vacuumed floors. I think that would be stronger and more useful. Vacuum repair places might have one for you to buy and try out.

Yes, good point. There are so many fishing tools that are made out of composites these days.
