Good advice. But what about solo paddlers? 2:00 -- You must be able to self rescue under any conditions that you might paddle in. That means practicing until you can always get back into the boat, regardless of whether there's another kayaker to help. Before you go on the water you need to know how to get back in unassisted. If you can't self rescue, then yes, stay close to shore. But even then beware of an offshore wind and currents that might push you beyond swim range in a short time. Read the Deep Trouble series of kayak books and internalize the lessons. Happy Paddling!

You should have a bullet proof roll if you venture out to see. rescues are fine but should not be needed. Rescues in my opinion are still beginner level. Nothing wrong with that level just know your limitations.
