Is Kayak fishing hard on an extremely windy lake? I normally fish alone and have a couple public lakes I go to fish on a regular basis. I don't own a boat. I see Kayaks priced as low as $150 bucks at Walmart. But don't know enough about them. That seems awful cheap. I believe you get what you pay for, but I don't need much to be able to get out there by myself and fish from a new angle I can't reach from the bank. If I bought one am I going to be fighting the current all day out on windy water?

+Hunter DAVIS not skipjack, they are hickory shad, both are members of the herring family but they are not the same species. Threadfin, blueback, American shad, hickory shad and skipjack are all distinct types of herring.

I use moss and blue camo and I have tried the invisbraid but its necessary in these murky waters. FYI - If you take normal green spiderwire braid, and then grab a handful of mud off the bottom and rub it into the last couple feet of braid, it will stain the braid the exact same color as the bottom especially is its not brand new braid. Perfect camo every time.

Only about 50 yards more than your furthest cast is necessary. Few people can cast more than 100 yards with a catfish rod. So only about 150 yards max is really necessary.

not skip jack, they are Hickory shad which are close cousins of skip jacks, Hickories live east of the eastern Continental Divide and live in saltwater and run up into fresh water to spawn. Skip jack live west of the divide and are freshwater only.

Nope - Skip jack are Alosa chrysochloris. Hickory shad are Alosa mediocris. They are related but different species.

Awesome spot to fish this time of year, shad, striper, catfish, bass and plenty of snakeheads running up there right now. Been going 3x a week since the shad showed up. Great day on the water! Also recently met a guy out fishing named "J" that was a zombie in one of your videos. Great guy to fish with, hopefully ill get him out soon after some of those shad.

Loved the video. Tommy was so cute, especially when he had a fish on the line. You do know you can eat the Hickory shad. They take a little work to prepare, but are good eating.

Currently on the Potomac and its creeks in both Maryland and Virginia you can only catch and release both American and hickory shad. The shad he cast nets off the boat come out of a lake and are allowed to be kept as bait. http://prfc.us/sports/BLUE%20SHEET-2013.pdf this is the chart that shows what can be kept on the Potomac currently from Maryland. Va follows the same regulations. Hope that helps.

try giving the worms some life, drag them through the water and twitch them back and forth. try to put them in places where fish live like docks, submerged logs, rocks.

Another app to try would be fishbrain or join one of the fishing groups on facebook. Northern virginia anglers club or Northern Virginia fishing should be able to offer some advice. I know a few members live out in the Louden, south riding area.

Gabriel Calderon We use live & cut Bluegill & shad. We catch a LOT more Flatheads On live baitfish than we do Channel Cats. With us, cut bait gets all the Cats. But we still catch more Flatheads & Blues than Channels even on cut bait.
