"I decided to take the rest of the day off." Wise advice and an even wiser person who will follow it. I used to kayak and scuba dive with a jerk - always ridiculed me for following the rules of the water and following my instinct. Oddly, I've traveled the world and experienced much more outdoor adventures than this jerk because I didn't have to take the time to recover from stupid injuries, also, we just stopped inviting the jerk because his recklessness endangered our lives. I know when to call it a day.

RW Anglin That's the thing, it's only really suicidal for those that aren't well trained and prepared. He's got a wealth of experience and knowledge, along with proper gear. That's why he has survived in waters others would have died. And don't forget, every time we get in a car we put our lives at great risk, are we stupid for doing it?

This guy is a legend in kayaking and knows his shit. He's done some of the sickest, scariest water around the world with no issues because he's that good. When he says its the only time he felt in danger, he likely means it. Smart man to have packed the rapid air tank in his vest. Don't knock a guy who's conquered giants and wise enough to take such precautions.

I was in a 16 ft. boat going out deception pass when the tide was just getting started and a huge whirlpool formed just in front of the boat. The boat went right into that damn thing and all you could see was green water front and sides of the cabin windows. I thought we were gonners for sure but the Captain hit the throttle and we suddenly popped up and outta there like nothing ever happened! Scared the crap out of me I don't mind telling you.

Oh yeah! on our way out to fish for rock bas and cod around the SJs. I've also heard from life long boating residences of logs being sucked down into the running tide and on one occasion, a log was propelled upwards from the deep with enough force to completely impale a 25 ft. vessel who took the same foolish chance that we had! Deception Pass tide runs can kill you.....

most whitewater is air (aerated). If not enough 'orbital vector motion' to roll over-and-back-up going over the first time, you need to find the microtension of the water's surface to roll up...so must wait, be patient, conserve air and muscle energy to minimize the risk of a fail; and do this repeatedly. A paddler only has so much air. Certain paddlers have a unique genetic dispositions to be able to hold their breath. Tom Cruise would prob do well...apparently for one of his movies he learned to hold air for 6.5 minutes (!)

In the kayak you have a better chance of coming back up in time... he had gone very deep and the air in the boat is a lot of floatation.
