Paddling in calm conditions and still waters I would agree with you. However when miles out at sea facing tide rip, choppy sea and headwind, a consistent power stroke is absolutely required. Digging close to your yak reaching as far forward as you can and following through behind to maximize the propulsion from a single stroke. Pushing with the air arm is an important part of this. Your legs are also important pushing against your stroke side as the power comes on.You may have to sustain this for a long time and you have to set your stroke powerful enough so you can maintain it, and gauge it against markers on land to be sure you are making sufficient headway. I have seen myself having to maintain this stroke for several miles, it is gruelling. It is also marvellous exercise for strength building.

Hmm and here I always thought you are supposed to rotate and "PUSH" with arm that is in the air and not "pull" with arm that is in the water..esp if you are just going in a straight flat line. More power in pushing than pulling - or at least that is what I have been told..I may be wrong

More precisely if your shoulders relative to your hips are turning on each stroke, then you are using your core. The more muscles that distribute the effort the easier paddling will be, and the quicker you will become accustomed to the effort of long distance paddling. The analogy to concrete for my mileage does little to further the point to efficiency that is trying to be conveyed. A better explanation includes a description of the wasted effort that accompanies techniques that create a lot of splashing. If water is splashing then that represents energy that is moving water independently from your kayak's base of friction. ie, for every drop of water separated from the whole you have not gained traction against the body of water your kayak is at rest against. Slowly ramping up force, and avoiding splashing, allows all of the water molecules that are being used to create traction to do so vs. wasting effort having water go airborne. The analogy works, but does not connect the dots to why.
