Kayaking with Orcas 2015 New Zealand

(NOTE: Orcas come in at 2mins after the video starts, after a small conservation message.) This was to be a day of trialling a new kayak. The weather was great, the sun shining and there was absolutely no wind. We launched from Pilot Bay and headed around Mauao (Mount Maunganui) and as we got around the other side, 2 large Orca shot past me in the opposite direction. From there I basically stopped, and let the 2 curious orca, and the rest of the pod which soon turned up, interact and feed on Eagle rays around me. Orca are always an incredible sight to behold and many other people were lucky enough to be able to watch them from the Mount walking track as well on this day. These are our taonga, our treasures, and we MUST take better care of the oceans, and not for us, but for those creatures that call the ocean their 'home'. Special thanks to the organisations and departments around the World that are 'chipping away' and doing what they can to protect the Planets wildlife, both on land and in the Sea. It is because of you that perhaps I am able to see what I see, still. Thanks also to the schools both here, and in the U.S (via Skype) that have allowed me to come and talk about my experiences, and listen to the kids about their experiences with conservation that is being passed down through the teachers. Great to see! Lets keep the momentum going.

i really think the new Zealand orca are exceptionally friendly with people because of Ingrid visser and her relationship with them and her going in the water with them.   I mean look at how relaxed they seem to be around this guys kayak, not like they should think they have anything to fear from a puny human in the slightest of vessels, but they are completely relaxed it seems to me and seem friendly.

I wonder what pod / family group this is. 5:05 That's a very specific white marking on the male's left pectoral fin. I've never seen a marking like that before. Should be an easy identifier.

What, if any, are the general guidelines when being around Orca and how different is it around the world? Have you kayaked in the Pacific NW. I understand the Juan de Fuca Orca are much different than those pods outside in the ocean. Thanks again for all you do.

Do the gopro stick trick to an orca or a whale who has memories about its relatives killed by harpoon. Hopefully all the harpoons will be changed with such sticks... Just sayin'.
The Kayaking World of Nathan Pettigrew
The Kayaking World of Nathan Pettigrew - 7 years ago
HI Eileen! :-) Great question! When you say 'guidelines', do you mean rules and regulations? Here in New Zealand the regulation requires people to be at least 50m from an Orca or whale, which is still pretty close considering that I believe the distance is 100yards in the U.S, and 200 in Canada. Having a permit allows me to get up close to these marine mammals and educate others on what to do, and what not to do. Yes, I believe the Northern Orca breach quite a lot more that their Southern counterparts, and obviously have a very different diet as well. I haven't yet had the chance to get up there but Im sure I will one day. :-)

realhumanbean

It's weird, but orcas and dolphins seem to have this tacit agreement to not go after humans.. I mean, they're pretty much water people. If humans evolved in water, we'd basically be orcas/dolphins. They seem to recognize human intelligence, and we theirs.

Orcas jack and kill dolphins though for some reason... Maybe the same reason why we killed our other hominid cousins who knows.
joey b
joey b - 7 years ago
Yea they could easily do those things, but they wont because they are not interested in eating humans at all. We are not on an Orcas diet at all. There has never been a recording of a wild orca killing a human. Will that happen one day? I wouldnt bet against it, but i would be shocked if it happened to me if i was around Orca. I believe they have the second largest brain on the planet? I need a fact check for that. Which makes them the oceans top predator, so they dont really go hungry. I think they usually get killed or drown from getting trapped in ice. I'm not an expert, but i couldnt see Orca tipping a kayak to eat the human even if he or she was hungry.

Orcas are too smart to harm humans. They know what we would do to them if they did; it is likely we would treat them the way we treat wolves. If you want to read a mind-changing book, read Communicating with Orcas- From a whales perspective by Mary Getten, a well-known pet communicator.

The only orca 'attack' on a human which caused a fairly serious injury was back in 1972 when a surfer need 100 stitches for a cut. And I say 'attack' because it's possible the orca mistook the surfer for a seal (like sharks do) and then aborted its attack, doing only minimal damage.

Also not all orcas are mammal eaters, some ecotypes just eat fish. Not sure about these NZ orcas, but I know some of them love to eat sting rays!
Keli Gutierrez

quite opposite actually they are like that in captivity because they are depressed drugged out and made to do shows and much more do some research you'll be amazed these animals actually are very caring of humans in the wild and have saved a couple from a shark attack! and brought them back up to the boat .

+J-D- S-S They are far too intelligent to think I am something to eat. If an animal with this intelligence was to take a bite, it wouldn't be by mistake They know what they're doing, but for some reason we think that anything in the Ocean with teeth is going to attack us or bite us, and that is just not the case.

+J-D- S-S Hello! No, not at all. The first time I kayaked with Orca many years ago, I was little scared as it was the first time, but now I have done it so many times and there is little to worry about. The key is to give them distance, let them come to you and to not cut them off. It's about respecting their space when they want it. Sometimes, some Orca are very interactive ad sometimes they are not. They are amazing.... :-)

+turtleboy991 hI mate...sorry, might be my accent. From Bronze Whaler sharks to mako sharks. 'Bronzes' as they are typically called are also called Copper sharks in some parts of the World. They have started moving in again already as the water is warming up so it should be a good season of seeing them at the beach soon.

Beautiful video....... I took a kayaking expedition to BC and wish I would've got an encounter with orca's like this. But the encounter I had was still amazing.

+The Kayaking World of Nathan Pettigrew Do you find there is a pattern when you see them kayaking? Any particular time of the year? I would love to see them, to me they are one of the best creations God ever created.

+simo134 I don't see the Orcas very often. It has been a long time since I have seen them as they travel around the entire coast of Nz. On rare occasions, I get lucky.

I would also like to add that if ever you encounter a pod of orca who is doing the same as these guys were doing at the 4min and 5min mark.. It means they are Resting!! Most people don't realise that whales also need to rest... So Please do not disturb them if you come across a pod of whales Resting!
