Large Male Orca Swims AT & UNDER our KAYAK!

We paddled 15 miles round trip to see this group of 6 Biggs/Transient Orcas, from Bainbridge Island to Liberty Bay, Poulsbo (Puget Sound). WHAT A DAY!!! Watch it with sound... I am a bit excited at the events that occurred.

For strange reasons, orcas are not known to attack a human, better yet, there hasn't been a confirmed death by orcas in the wild, the only human that died by an orca was in a captivity. If these orcas wanted you dead, they would've done it, however, they're very interactive and social especially when it comes to humans. I've swam with a pod, it was risky since the pod had a baby.

Brandon, the shape of the fin is also different. The female's fin has a bit of a hook/curve to it while the male's does not.

You can tell by the size of the dorsal fin that this is a male Orca... Approx 6 feel tall. Females are much smaller (less than 1/2 the size, usually). Yes, it was an amazing encounter.

Title is likely wrong, the Orca from Puget Sound are Resident not Transient
OkiPuhno
OkiPuhno - 7 years ago
I didn't realize transients pass through Puget Sound, I did some open water dives there few years back and only witnessed the Residents feeding. Upon reading it appears, Transients pop up around Puget Sound when the Residents are feeding off shore. Interesting

Actually, we have both eco-types in the Puget Sound. These are Transients.

Is orca dangerous ?
*ty-dynasty* *
*ty-dynasty* * - 7 years ago
Baek Hyun usually not in the wild. There have been people that happened to be swimming and just so happens that the orcas where in the same area, all they do is look at you out of curiosity and swim right pass usually with their pod. Their Intelligent enough to know that we're not their prey. They love fish, shark and seals to name a few. If your close to them , the only thing that can be intimidating is their sheer size.

Wierd Whale Thing I wouldn't reccomend that lol while there are no known attacks in the wild from a killer whale you may just scare them off and ruin the experience. They are curious creatures so it would be better to enjoy the experience and observe from the kayak :)
Bear The Raspberryeater
Bear The Raspberryeater - 7 years ago
While they are very kind to humans, they will get unnerved by you jumping in - therefore defending themselves by attacking, or swimming away fast, probably making you get caught in their ripple and get caught UNDER the kayak. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure this is what would happen.

Why don't people simply learn about nature and wildlife . .we've got the largest info resource on the planet with the internet . .? if your going kayaking in an area known to have Orca's around . .simply read up about their behavior and you'll feel a lot safer . .

Raymond Fee easy to say from a video. When the Orca is right there they’re nervous and excited
Nadia Jones
Nadia Jones - 6 years ago
We not know that. For one it’s a killer whale, if they wanted they could be territorial and dangerous. Also they wouldn’t eat humans but if they mistook them for a seal they could still end up biting them. And then there’s the possibility that they’d want to play but they could still harm people by accident. Like that one dolphin that dragged a man into the water. I think it let go once it realized it was having trouble breathing but yeah

Luke-Like duh bruh! They have bigger brains, their size alone reflects that mate! Do me a favor bro, and quit commenting on YouTube and in your real life. They don't matter, and have no real significance like your life at the moment. You know that's just real disappointing, now I know how your parents feel about you.

ngiyaxolisa from what I heard the orca let him go and never came back, after realizing he grabbed a human. it probably thought he was a seal. that's how some surfers are attacked by sharks. they don't have a taste for humans.
ngiyaxolisa
ngiyaxolisa - 7 years ago
Tell that to the California surfer who took a 100 stitches from what he claimed was an orca attack. The difference between a shark and an orca is pretty obvious up close and he'd have no reason I can imagine to lie about the alleged perpetrator.

Cetacean Project they won't harm you in the wild they more friendlier you can actually go on a ride with the orca in the wild life only if they are in captivity such as SeaWorld for etc in SeaWorld it's a really depressing life for them in side a small bowl filled with water these guys travel the world and are much safer in the wild to pat or even ride on a wild orca there's actually more dramas in captivity than in the wild never have I heard about a wild orca attack only in SeaWorld

NukeCorruption That's one of the spots I'd like to go swimming/diving with them, Norway. Another spot is New Zealand. They're very interactive there. Some of the biggest Orcas are found in Norway and Iceland.
Bluenose352
Bluenose352 - 7 years ago
NukeCorruption Yes they sure are. I'd give anything to swim or go diving with them. You're very lucky. I've gone kayaking with them and it's incredible. They're incredible. And you're right, their size can be intimidating. But once you're past that fear, they're amazing to experience.
Bluenose352
Bluenose352 - 7 years ago
NukeCorruption. You're exactly right. They are curious. They actually observe us as much as we observe and are curious about them. There was one known incident in the early 70s. It was a case of mistaken identity though. In the surf, the surfer may have been amongst seals, trying to hide. Seeing as how the case was in Southern California, it was most likely the L.A. Pod. It may have been a juvenile too. It clamped on the surfers leg but immediately let go. The surfer received stitches. But that's the worst of the cases. Others were cases of Orcas bumping into people near the shore or swimming.
Bluenose352
Bluenose352 - 7 years ago
And they won't harm humans. Not in the wild anyway. They're like gentle giants to humans. Even the Transient Orcas.
