Gary Lundgren - 4 years ago
Thank you! That it does, including me. I am losing tho. In some pics I have, not posted on here, it shows me in it and the water still doesn't come even close to the gunnel. I have weighed in all the accessories and myself. I'm topping out close to the limit at 272#. These things are rated for less than real capacity just for a safety factor. I don't encourage to exceed the recommended weight limit.

Im new to kayak fishing and just wondering, would something like this be suitable for use in the ocean, say a mile or so out? If not, would outriggers make it more "sea worthy"? If not this kayak, can anyone recommend a stable kayak for ocean fishing (Preferably under $700). Stability is most important to me over tracking or looks or weight. Thanks! :)

Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 4 years ago
Thank you! An anchor trolley allows you to position your anchor at the front or rear end of your kayak, or anywhere in between. It is most useful in any water that has current. Also in still water such as lakes where with winds and waves, that can still move you around. Which end you position the anchor at will point you in a different direction so you can maximize your position for fishing. Usually we like to position ourselves so we are casting down wind. Don't want our lure or bait blowing back into our face! Thanks!

Mr. Gary, gotta say you have some great ideas...... just ordered my kayak as well as my fish finder..... question with the transducer in the hull, how well did it work with picking up the fish?
ak116211
ak116211 - 5 years ago
Worked out amazing
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
After the mounting has cured water can be added before you launch at the lake and use the fish finder. It only needs water in that cavity that the transducer sits in when you're going to use it. That takes up any air gap. Water will transmit signals and sound waves far better than air does. The water makes the transducer signal perform perfectly. A lot of people mount their transducers inside the hull. Even a lot of big boats do. Some people fill the void with a gel, paste or epoxy glue. I don't want mine to be that permanent and I think the denser and soft material may impair the signal. Water works great and easy. Thanks!
ak116211
ak116211 - 5 years ago
Did your transducer mount tell you to pour water in the hole for transducer after mounting? Seems weird to me
ak116211
ak116211 - 5 years ago
Awesome..... my fish finder comes tomorrow kayak will be about a week or two but I cant wait to try it out..... thanks for the video
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Thank you. I put it in the back as that part has the flattest surface to keep it mounted well and to keep it in an orientation to read correctly, and not sideways. Thanks!
ak116211
ak116211 - 5 years ago
Awesome thank you..... also why did you put the transducer to the back and not the front of kayak? Sorry for questions I just like your setup and want money the same
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Thank you! It does still read water temp for me as the hull acclimates to water temp and the transducer picks that up. Since the bottom of the hull is in the water it will acclimate closely. The hull on top with acclimate to the ambient air temperature. Thanks!
ak116211
ak116211 - 5 years ago
Nevermind didn't see you wrote in the video....... but doesn't mounting it in the hull stop it from reading water temp?

Water doesn’t go in where you have the battery?
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
You might be thinking of 'sit in' kayaks. Those do typically get water inside them. This is a 'sit on top', so should stay relatively dry inside.
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
I have not had a problem with that at all. It stays very dry unless you splash some in there, don't put the hatches on tight (and o-ring in place), or don't seal up any accessories you mounted to it.
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Yes, that battery is sealed.
Abraham Adams
Abraham Adams - 5 years ago
A little bit of water won’t hurt that battery.
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Thank you! I've never had any significant amount of water inside the hull. Everything is pretty well sealed up. Everything I do is sealed up to keep water out.

Have you tried 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive?
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Thank you! I'm not sure which one I tried. I'll have to take a look back at what I tried. Whichever, it needs to be able to adhere to what the kayak is made of, which is a Polyethylene. Which is a commonly available plastic that makes repairs easy.

This was an outstanding and sufficiently-detailed walk through many excellent and useful mods. I'm looking hard at getting one of these kayaks, so I'd be curious on your thoughts after having used it awhile. I realize it's an entry-level boat, but it may be all I can ever afford. Heard a lot of good things, and, at $250 or so, the price is definitely right!
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 5 years ago
Thank you! Yes, this is an entry level kayak. You can spend thousand$ on a bigger base kayak, then modify it. The more $ and size adds more capacities. The problem with this one is weight limit and some stability. To stand in this one, you need a good sense of balance. The weight limit is 275 lbs. I'm at 250 myself, so I can only add 25 lbs of gear. which is a lot if you think about it. And you can exceed the weight limit a little, altho not recommended. Apart from that, it's a great kayak! My son has the same one also and he's into being a minimalist with gear. I asked him to make us a video on how to fish with minimal gear. We'll see how that goes as he gains experience with it, and handles a few big fish. Thanks!

Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 6 years ago
Thank you! The total capacity is 275 lbs. That does not include the weight of the kayak. Just me and my gear. The kayak itself is 55 lbs unloaded. I come in at 250 lbs at the time. I'm endeavoring to keep my weight and gear below the 275. Albeit, capacity limits are underrated for safety reasons, and I agree with that. One reason why I want to keep my gear minimal. I am also on a diet and going to Planet Fitness to trim my weight down. Lost 20# so far. My main goal to get my weight down and to tone my muscles, is to make it easier to get back into my kayak should I go overboard. I have managed it as it is, I did practice it, but will be a lot easier if I lose weight and tone my muscles. I'm too old to body build, and don't really want to. Just want to get back in the kayak when I fall out. I've always had great balance and been an excellent swimmer. But as we age, it gets a little harder. I'll post a pic if I ever get to look like Mark. :-) Thanks!

I have this same kayak I have trouble with paddling and castibg at the same time is it possible to add a mod to add a foot paddle on this ? Thabks great video
Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 6 years ago
Thank you. I think paddling and casting at the same time is a matter of talented coordination. That of which I don't have. I kinda find a spot and drift, or anchor, then cast. Else I can cast out and paddle, and basically troll. Thanks!

Gary Lundgren
Gary Lundgren - 6 years ago
I'm the same weight at 5'7". No problem with my gear and myself. I am losing because it's healthy, and primarily to make it easier for me to re-enter the kayak if I fall out. I'm quite heavy for my height, but I do have a stocky Swede body. I did practice falling out and getting back in, in shallow water. I can do it, but it would be a lot easier at less weight.

Sad. There's no other store like in this area. Not within 40 mi. This is a small town so the store must have been an under performer. Our population is declining. Thanks

Thank you! I mounted the transducer in the rear hull on the big flat area just inside the hatch. Easy location. When I was on the water, it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Hello Gary this is by far one of the best kayak setup videos i have run across. You kept me captivated through the entire video. Your instructions and explanations were perfect. I have the same kayak and mounted my sonar in a similar manner but, I use a RAM ball mount setup with a thinner rail which fit inside the indentation perfectly. The ball mount gave me the ability to bring my sonar more flush with the kayak so the sonar wouldn't be so high. I will definitely be ordering the milk create you used. How did the seat modification workout for you on the water? Thank you and I will be looking forward to your future videos. AWESOME WORK!!!

Rico Suave Reyes I just bought this kayak late last year. Did you drag your kayak a lot or scrape the bottom ever when you were out fishing? Just wondering how it handles things like that. I don’t plan on dragging my kayak, try and keep that to a minimum but I do fish creeks where rocks or branches will hit you sometimes and some places you have to get out and drag it to continue. Thanks
