Mandarin is kinda universally known to all people who grew up in China, Cantonese isn't known by everyone due to little known teachers in China. Only families that were grown into Cantonese got the language down.

Haha, well, in my case, Cantonese is my native dialect, but if I think an older person is Chinese, I often choose to speak in Mandarin because that's the more common dialect. It wouldn't be unusual for Chris to assume that the parents speak Mandarin. Plus it adds to the awkwardness and how much Chris doesn't really know the parents well.

it's not a matter of continuity - they probably made Chris attempt Mandarin to emphasize his awkwardness, for the viewers who get the language difference. Like, he's really not properly prepared to meet the parents if he doesn't even know what language he should use with them! haha

I'm not saying it's not possible (as I speak both), but if the parents are choosing to speak in Cantonese, it's clearly their native dialect. You would think for a short film such as this, they'd just choose to use one dialect for everyone to speak for continuity purposes.
