Yes true.... no whimping allowed.. haha. If the rain does not pick up we will go kayaking coming weekend for 3 days and camping in the wild, if you can call anything in my country "the wild" it is a nature reserve with tide differences.... There are beavers and birds. The forecast is -4C (25F) at night we will use sit on top Kayaks. The whole trip is about 40 km.

I have a cheeper lighter kayak its a old town vapor 10 its 45 lbs. Yes it easier pick up an go. But after 2 years its so freaking uncomfortable. Any time over 1 hr and my back starts to hurt. So if any one is going to buy a kayak the 1st thing to look in to is how comfortable it will be. If its not comfortable for get everything else. Knowing what i know now i would be happy spending $2000 on a comfortable kayak i only use 5 time a year.

I have heard great things about that kayak - thank you for providing everyone those valuable perspectives. I 100% agree that you should find a comfortable yak. The reason I made this video is to help people think about the things they probably aren't thinking about when buying their first fishing kayak. Again, thanks for watching and the great comments!

If your fishing a river or steam a good tip is to fish upstream as far as you like then float and fish your way back to where you parked your car. You should attach a strap to the front of your boat because you may need to get out and walk your way up though the riffles and runs. Also I've looked at this boat you have one of my concerns is that the back support is to low as compared to other kayak brands. For a guy as tall as you seem I think this would be an issue.
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
Good Tip! I have done that before and honestly paddling upstream is a real pain in the rear unless you have a smaller kayak that cuts through the water quicker. Not bad in gentle currents though... As far as the seat goes, I haven't had issues with it, in fact I actually love it. Yes it could be a bit taller but frankly I am always comfortable on the water!

Just join up to your channel. Love to hear about the features of your feel free lure 11.5. I am going to be getting one in January. Want to know how you think I should set it up. I fish for large cat fish ( shovel and blue ) in the Ohio river and strippers too. I also fish bass in East Fork Lake ( large mouth hybrid stripper and white bass ) I also fish large creeks depth is not an issue they are pretty deep. I want to put a depth finder and run two GoPros on the kayak and a head mount, but don't really know what I am doing with that. I do know that I want a landing Camara and a Camara facing me so I can talk about what I am doing. If you have any suggestions it would be great. Keep up the good work on the vids and hope to see you on my channel when I get it up and going. Tight lines brother.
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
Great questions - I will try to incorporate this as a video in my channel at some point in the near future! Until then, I believe you will absolutely love the FeelFree Lure 11.5 for those types of fishing! First thing you will want is to make an anchor trolley system which is very simple - lots of videos and articles about it online. Next, some kind of milk crate or box in the back for all of your gear. Finally, for filming, you could either get a suction cup or a jaws mount for the front GoPro. Then, like you said, a headcam and a bracketed mount on a landing net would be awesome angles. Happy to help with further questions, just let me know!

You made a lot of valid points.. I myself am a larger fellow and need a larger boat/kayak to allow for myself and gear. I frequently spend time on my local rivers and streams tubing, floating, and camping and have been wanting a kayak for some time. But I also am an avid fisherman and would like something I could use on the lake as well. I recently stumbled across the smaller sized skiffs witch you can stand on, paddle, and even mount a trolling motor or small outboard engine on. and the price difference is acceptable for me so that I can get more use out of it..Thanks for the video..

What is the likelihood that one can flip? Lakes around me that I'd like to fish at, are nice, but also pretty big and wide open. So wakes from boats will be hitting me. Is it safe to go out in this or any kayak on bigger and deeper lakes? Want peoples opinions. Trying to decide what to do. Thanks!
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
Hey thanks for watching! Some kayaks are more prone to flipping but I would say the Feelfree Lure 11.5 and other similar fishing kayaks are very stable and shouldn't give you any issues. I generally do not fish in areas with a lot of boat traffic but I have fished incredibly deep waters and I am never nervous.

Some precautionary measures you could take to keep yourself safe on the water are as follows:
1. Get a bright kayak that is easy to see
2. Wear a life jacket
3. Get a tall, bright flag that boaters can see from a distance

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Weight, weight, weight! Make sure you can handle the yak alone. I got way too excited when I had the money so I got a 12 footer.. I go out by myself so no crew to help launch/load. Driving a short bed chevy pick-up helps a little bit but dang it's a workout!

I just got a kyack and it was a fishing kyack. I would rather spend 1000 dollars on something that I can use 5-7 times a year and be comfortable. The other thing is there is no matnince fees for it like a real boat. And it will last forever. It's sucks being in a kyack for 6-8 hours and not having the ability to stand and not having leg room and not having a good seat. If you get a fishing kyack get a sit on sit ins sink and will suck you in and probably kill you and they are a pain in the ass if you sink it. I went from sit in to sit on and I sank/ capsized the sit in 4 times and it sucked me down I'm just glad I had a pfd on. The sit in has never sank because I can empty the water out of the boat with my scupper holes

Do you have a receiver hitch?

Here is one option.
http://www.autoanything.com/roof-racks/69A6612A0A0.aspx

Or you can get a bed extender...

Open the back hatch, slide the yak in and rest it on the extender. Put a strap on the hatch door to bring it down and keep it in place.

Thanks for the video. I am 53 and not as athletic now, but still hunt and fish, so weight and stability of a kayak is a big issue. I have been reading and shopping for a one person pontoon or a fishing kayak. I am not sure which may or may not serve me well. I plan on only fishing ponds and small lakes. Standing up is an issue because I would want to reduce sun reflection and stretch. What are your thoughts?
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
First off, thanks for watching! Depending on your price range, I would opt for a bigger, wider kayak. I can stand just fine in my FeelFree and I am 6'5 so that speaks to the stability. Honestly, a pedal drive yak would be the best option because you can fish so much easier in them but they are very costly. Let me know what other questions you may have and I will be sure to answer to the best of my ability! Thanks again.

Ethan , thanks for replying. I guess I left out the pros of the kayak too. I learned a lot from your videos. I am looking for a good sit on top fishing kayak now. I have run across a couple sit in kayaks that have been modded for fishing but the owners are selling because they are hard to fish out of. So I am saving for a fishing kayak. I have reelfoot lake, several water sheds and ponds around to use one. Planning a trip soon to the current river to do some fly fishing soon I hope.

That wasn't the intention - my bad! I just wanted to make sure everyone thinks through those things before going out and buying. I certainly recommend getting into it - kayak fishing is incredibly fun!

As far as my kayak goes, it is very comfortable, easy to stand in, spacious so I can fit tons of gear in it, and so much more. I explained the main cons of the kayak, but overall this kayak provides a ton of good times on the water. Any other specific questions I would be happy to answer! Thanks for watching!

I fish for bass a lot and am really interested in buying a fishing kayak. I've only kayaked 3 times in my life and never used one for fishing. What fishing kayak would you recommend for around $300-$450
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
Mike, please refer to my latest video which is a $400 kayak - https://youtu.be/Hhfvtq9wa9I There are a lot of options like this, but a couple other things to consider would be...

1. How big are you? Get a kayak you are comfortable in.
2. What types of water will you be fishing? If lakes, you will want something more stable. If rivers, you will want something that tracks better. Etc.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I will be happy to help!

Comparing your kayak to an ocean trident. Would love to hear some of your thoughts about the features of yours
Online Outdoorsman
Online Outdoorsman - 7 years ago
Absolutely, I have never sat in a Trident but visually, they look pretty similar. They are both large fishing kayaks (70+ lbs) and comfortable rides. What I can see for differences are the following:
1. FeelFree seems to sit up a bit higher and has less of a keel so it is likely slower than the Trident
2. FeelFree has a nicer seat (comfort is crucial on the water)
3. FeelFree would likely be more stable

Overall, it just depends on what you want to use it for. The Trident would likely be faster and track better, however the FeelFree would likely be better for standing/all day comfort. Let me know if you have any more questions! More Kayak Vids to come!

Hi, I live in Switzerland but my kayak is in Croatia^. I'm not a river and lake guy...i need the open sea but i only can go a few times a year but then...I'll go every day :) After I bought my Feelfree Lure 11.5...I had the same thoughts like you...it's huge and i don't have enough space but I was lucky that it fit in my appartment.

Ha! Yeah I would be sketched out in a yak too, although I have seen a lot of videos of people kayak fishing alongside gators with no issues. Fortunately I do not have to deal with those toothy critters in Arkansas...

I own a Feel Free Lure 11.5 and forget about putting up on top of the car. I bought a Harbor Freight boat trailer for it and it works great. I don't know if they sell them anymore but they have some others that might work. Or buy a pickup. $400 vs $25000

Sounds like a great option - I will keep using the roof solely because I do not have any space for a small trailer at this time. Thanks for watching!

Hey Ethan. Nice vid. Looking to purchase same model at end of March. Is that an anchor trolley that you rigged up? No drilling? Looks like you used bungies. I'm about 275lbs. Will the 11.5 be ok for my weight? I know the capacity is 400+ but I'm concerned my weight will make it ride low in the water. Thx!!!

Analog, thanks for watching! I would say the 11.5 should be fine for you but you might consider a test ride - does anywhere in your area carry this particular model or similar kayaks you could sit in and test on water before purchasing?

Yes - I rigged it up with no holes drilled whatsoever - see my instructions here: https://goo.gl/VezpGI

Cool video Ethan...I use to float tube fish with the fish cat 4, but after hurricane Katrina I've found alligators have started to show up in areas that haven't had them in over a 100 years.....so float tube fishing is cheaper and you can deflate and fold the tube for storage. A total set-up float tube fishing is under a $800.00 and very fun

Theft prevention I actually had my new feel free 11.5 stolen at Bass Pro parking lot in Tennessee. Invest in a bicycle chain that is covered with plastic. Secured with a good lock. Or you maybe purchasing a kayak for some backwoods scanvenger.

I just Bought a Vibe Sea Ghost 130 for under $900 & it came w/ a nice paddle, stadium adjustable seat, & built in rudder system. It's a beautiful Kayak and hands down the absolute best all around offer on a kayak ready for the water. it's a 13' too!

A slayer 10 would be awesome! A little pricey, but pedal drive has to be amazing to fish with.

+BlackAnvil47 yes, FeelFreeKayaks are pretty populars in Thailand, not sure but I think they are constructed here, so easily available compared to other brands.

You have pointed out the right thing that everyone looking for kayak fishing should consider before buying... too heavy, too much pain for transportation and so, less kayak adventures because lazy to move out this heavy weight ! I am presently on the Move, it is very light and handy for transportation but the small size makes it unstable in windy conditions... As a matter of fact, I am now targeting the Lure 10, better compromise between carry weight and stability in the water I believe ! Also, I am fishing inshore fresh waters only, for offshore fishing no choice, should go for 13 up... but then, always going with friends to help each other and for basic safety at sea.

I considered getting one of those, but I seen several of them damaged with holes in the aft end sections...sorry but those kayaks are off my list.

You may want to check ACK Kayak outlet page and maybe Appomattox River Kayak in Virginia on their used kayak section.

I've still haven't gotten my courage up to get another one as of yet.

Since the price off the Lure 10 has decreased I may purchase another one or a slayer 10 pedal drive.

Tore tendons in my leg so float tube fishing is out.

I hear you - they are pricey and a lot of work. Sorry that happened - maybe something a bit lighter and less expensive would be a good short term option? I like the looks of some of the perception kayaks for a more value price.

I just subscribed to your channel ... I see you're just now getting into kayaking. I got my Feelfree 11.5 about a year ago. I also did a review and listed pros and cons of this kayak. take a look at my channel sub if you like. I'm getting ready to add lights and will have a comprehensive video on the installation of LED strips!

Hey Ethan: Excellent forewarnings: wait: think about weight (and length) AND the loading/storing difficulties associated with increased weight (and length). Solution: WS Tarpon 100 at 55lbs (and 10ft). It is still super fishable with built-in tracks and features.

Definitely sounds like an easier yak to maintain and utilize! Thanks Larry!

Excellent arguments to consider before buying.
Perhaps to think about placing the electric motor, which is excellent for slow river.
I use it in a way to go upstream from where I left the car and then get back ... minn kota ENDURA C2 30 LB with short shaft is a great choice and even enough to drag another kayak. It is very easy and inexpensive to create a shaft fore the engine on Feelfree lure 11.5 (cost me about $ 10)... I have video where i use it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1EkysEXtHE&t=10s
