Very nice, well thought out set-up. I’m thinking you must be an engineer or maybe an electrician by trade and now I can see why the video and audio quality of your videos is really a cut above. Really enjoying all your videos, excellent stuff.

Does changing out the screws create any issues with the new ones fitting in tightly? Really like the clean touch changing over to black gives the boat.

As long as you use the same size, length, and preferably head shape they’ll fit the same as the old ones. Most of mine were 10-24, 10-32, or 1/4-20 but I removed one from each piece of hardware on the kayak to measure length and be sure I got the right size and thread pitch, then made a list of everything I’d need to replace them. Black oxide coated stainless steel is hard to find but Albany County Fasteners had a great selection and you can get as small of quantities as you want. They also have a diagram for each screw type to make sure you measure the length correctly as it varies between different styles of screws.

Hi NDYakAngler. Just watched your latest Video “MN Fishing Opener 2018”. Looks like a fun time out on the river. The current was really flowing!

I have a question for you about your setup. How did you attach the right sided anchor cleat to the track system? I have a similar cleat that requires drilling holes and bolts to secure the cleat—would prefer to install in the same location as yours on the existing track. Did you modify the cleat?

Thanks

NDYakAngler

Hey Mike, I didn't have to modify the cleat itself but I had to make a few things to install it. The cleat came with two countersunk holes already molded into it. I found a 10-32 hex drive machine screw with a flat head fit perfectly flush with the surface so that's what I decided to use. Slide trax accessories use a 1/4-20 screw so I had to make my own square nuts to fit inside the slide trax rail. I used a strip of 1/8" aluminum and tapped 10-32 threads to work with the screws I wanted to use. I noticed the plastic on either side of the rail was slightly higher than the rail itself so to prevent cracking the cleat I made a strip to sandwich between the two. I used 1/8" ABS plastic I had on hand, the width of the rail by slightly less than the length of the cleat with holes drilled to match those on the cleat.

You are an awesome fisherman and I enjoy watching all your clips, Thanks. Question on your AV setup. You have two cameras I assume you are rolling at the same time, you enter them on your timeline in your software and cut to each cam for final render. My question is your audio recorders. Are you using the Gopro mics or are you lining up the recorders in the timeline for cut.
You appear to be a very good producer also. Thanks

Thank you! I record audio directly onto the Zoom H1s and swap it in editing. I tried wiring the H1 mics output to the GoPro but I didn’t like the way the GoPro processed the audio. It didn’t sound nearly as good as having a separate recording.

I should look into 3D printing or a less time consuming way to manufacture the parts. With all the time spent cutting, grinding, and sanding and the cost of the raw materials I don't think I could sell them cheap enough for there to be a demand. I have a friend from the Dallas area who drives up here every summer to fish. One of these days I'll have to make a trip down to Texas. The bass don't get much bigger than 5-6lbs around here so it would be awesome to have a shot at something much bigger!

I am interested in mounting a Lowrance unit in my Tarpon and was wondering if you had a video available of you mounting one in your Tarpon? Really interested in the way you have the transducer mounted on the inside. Any help would be appreciated greatly. I have watched this one particular video several times reviewing how you have set this kayak up. I don't feel confident in my abilities to mount the transducer inside the hull and it work after hearing horror stories from others about their attempt to do the same thing. You seem to have a handle on it and I would like your advice on the install if possible. Thanks for any help and for the great videos also.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 6 years ago
I don't have a video of the installation but gluing the transducer down is pretty easy. Just scuff up the area on the hull where it will be glued down with some 400 grit sandpaper and wipe it with some rubbing alcohol. Then I like to put the glue on the transducer, a thick bead ran down the middle lengthwise so when you press it down it pushes the air out. Then press it in place, run a couple strips of duct tape over the top so it doesn't move and put a brick or something on it to weigh it down. Then let it sit for a few days for the glue to fully dry. Using duct seal instead is another faster less permanent method, its like sticky clay so you just press it down and its good to go.

I really like your anchor trolley setup over what I've seen out there. Any chance you could tell me the trolley brand hard wear setup you used? Was also was wondering if you have ever tried a skeg for it?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 6 years ago
I used Ronstan and Harken pulleys and mostly Yak Gear components although some of it is custom made. Never tried a skeg. I really don't even use the anchor much, mostly for fall fishing when the smallies move into the reservoirs and the wind is blowing.

Thanks for the help. What size and length are the CF tubes are you using? I'm looking to make a night safety light mount somehow. Any suggestions for an easy quick night light fix? Cameras are down the road, but are you a machinist? Again thanks.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 6 years ago
I made a ramp shaped part out of HDPE and ABS plastic, the PVC rod holders are glued and screwed to that and the whole thing is screwed to the back wall of the milk crate. The milk crate is the first thing I'd do when rigging up a new kayak. An anchor cleat or two will come in handy for a variety of things. Also the little pull strap I showed in this video is something I always have with now. It comes in handy almost every trip whether it's for pulling the kayak over land, tying to a branch instead of dropping anchor, or keeping the kayak attached to me while wade fishing. I did add a carabiner to the opposite end of the handle to make it easier to clip on and off.

Great video, like the setup. Can you share some info on the transducer install....I am a newbie, but surely want to get some tips.. Appreciate it !
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 6 years ago
Thanks Dave! I used Marine Goop to glue my transducer down inside the hull. I scuffed up the hull with some 400 grit sandpaper (don't sand the transducer) and ran a thick bead of glue lengthwise on my transducer so that it would push out any air pockets and spread evenly when pressed down. Then I pressed it in place where I wanted it, ran a couple strips of duct tape across the top to hold it steady while drying, and set a couple bricks on top to keep pressure on it. Then you just let it sit for a couple days for the glue to fully dry. Another faster, less permanent method is using G&B duct seal you can find at Home Depot. It's a sticky clay like substance that the transducer will shoot through. Just make a ball of it about the size of a quarter and press it down between the transducer and hull, then add a little more around the outside of the transducer to help keep it in place. With either method the key is to get as little air as possible between the transducer and the hull.

I'm 6' and about 190. My foot pegs still have 3-4 notches I can slide them forward though so there should be plenty of room. If that's still not enough the entire track the foot pegs attach to can be removed and repositioned farther forward, you'd just have to drill some new holes.

I'm leaning towards using an H1 just for the sake of have my hands/body completely free of camera gear. Sounds great!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
I use the on board mics on the H1 and record directly to it. I tried running the output to the Gopro but it altered the audio and didn't sound nearly as good. The H1 is sensitive to wind though so a furry windscreen is a must for outdoor use. I also use an ATR-3350 lapel mic occasionally, for the hat cam rig and when it gets too windy for the H1 to handle.

Joseph Diesing - 7 years ago
Oh my bad... I'm currently rigging my setup... I remembered how great yours was. So I was thinking about what type of mic you used (didn't re-watch the video). So you don't actually use an external microphone you just use the one that comes on the zoom H1... Good to know.

So the transducer comes out the bottom of the kayak? Do you worry it will get damaged on rocks, etc.?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
You just need to glue it to the hull with something like Marine Goop and try not to get any air bubbles between the two. Another less permanent method is Duct Seal from Home Depot. It's a sticky clay like substance so you just put a ball of it on the bottom of the transducer and press it against the hull, then build some up around the outside to keep it in place. I used that method after having to replace my transducer in my old kayak and it worked great!

NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
Rods come in different length, power, and action specs so some are better suited for throwing certain lures. It's good to have at least two rods ready to go, that way if you miss a strike you can follow up with a different lure without having to take time to tie it on.

Great video. What is an anchor trolley though? How does it work ?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
The anchor trolley is a system of pulleys with a rope looped around them and a ring to run your anchor line through. Most people run them the length of the kayak and it allows you to run the anchor off any position on the kayak. I only used the back portion with my old kayak so that's all I installed here, that way when it's windy I can pull the anchor line to the back of the kayak and it keeps me positioned with the wind behind me.

That is one sweet set up. I use a go pro front and back but no external battery. My challenge was the fact that I like to fish but I also like to do some whitewater kayaking. (Level I, II, III) So my go pro mounts had to be either flexible or have a break away feature in case I turn over in the whitewater. I used big washers and a big magnet to create the break away feature. I have a 10' kayak (Lifetime Tamarack) that works well for fishing and whitewater but recently realized that in level III whitewater it filled with water easy and took a while to self drain so I am looking for a new kayak that will still fish well but do a better job in the whitewater. My friends had a Heritage 10' and a Pescador 10' and I guess they just ride higher out of the water therefore do not get filled with water and drain it out faster too. I also noticed that theirs seemed to paddle faster than mine as well. I was thinking about the Tarpon 100 mainly because I have always felt the 12' is to long for whitewater. What are your thoughts and do you know if the Tarpon 100 is a good rig as far as all the things I have mentioned. Speed, not taking on excessive water and draining out quickly?? Thanks

Thanks Rickey! That's a great idea with the magnet for a break away mount! My paddling experience is limited to my Tarpon 120's but I have a friend who has a 100. It's not as fast as the 120 but it does ride a little higher in the water. Both have the same scrupper holes and mine always seems to drain out almost instantly when I get swamped going over a dam. The Tarpon 100 should be very similar to your friends Pescador, they're basically the same hull.

How does the 120 do on smaller/faster moving rivers? I am looking at the tarpon and the aspire for here in NC. Trying to decided on sit on top or sit in.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
The Tarpon does really well on rivers. I have no problem paddling mine up to this spot, farther upstream it gets too rocky though. The problem I run into is those spots where the current picks up it generally gets shallow and if you're in less than 8" of water it gets tough to put any power behind your paddle stroke without bashing the blade into rocks. Those two kayaks would be pretty similar paddling against current though, maybe a slight edge to the Tarpon with its longer more aerodynamic hull but the Aspire will be easier to maneuver.

how were you able to conceal the power cable and the transducer cable from the fish finder
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
The base for the fish finder has a hole in the middle to run the cords through the bottom and I drilled a hole in the mounting location on the kayak so I could run them straight down to the inside. I had to drill something like a 1/2" hole to fit the plugs through so I figured how much cord I'd need on the top side and wrapped a thin strip of duct tape around both cords together in the spot where they'd come through the kayak plastic so it was a snug fit in the hole. Once I had the ff base mounted I filled the opening in the middle where the cords pop through with marine goop to keep them in place and prevent any water leaks.

The first one net I did was pretty easy, I'd already used it for a year so the glue was starting to come undone. All I had to do was yank on the bungee and the cap popped off. The second time around I did it with a brand new net. I had to pry at the cap with a big flathead screwdriver while pulling on the bungee.

Very nice kayak. How do you do that on a river paddling and fishing at the same time? Must be a circus act.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
Thanks! The water at this spot is a little shallow and fast compared to most areas of the river I fish. Here I'll usually hop out and wade fish around the rocks. In slower moving water the kayak sits still pretty well if you have the front end pointed into the current, plenty of time to get in a cast or two before I start drifting back.

It's good that you're doing some research before buying, there's a ton of different kayaks to choose from these days. It's all about finding one that suits the type of fishing you'll be doing. I like my Tarpon because it has good speed and is great for paddling against river current. I wouldn't mind picking up something a little wider I can stand up on for fishing lakes though. The Pelican Catch 120 is one I've been looking at, Fleet Farm has them on sale for 699 right now. It's kind of similar to that Cabela's one your looking at which also looks like a great kayak.

I would strongly recommend a paddle leash. Your paddle can always take a dunk when you least expect it, then you're in a world of trouble. For about $15.00 you can get that extra little bit of insurance. Also, if you happen to hit a rock or something & dunk yourself at least you can stay connected to your yak if the paddle is in your hands.

The only thing I really sketched out on a planning pad was the part of the front camera mount that holds the copper pins and magnets, just to make sure everything would fit. Everything else was either planned out in my head or built to fit for a specific purpose. One thing that would definitely save a lot of work on the crate camera rig would be to just have a long enough cord from the power converter to wrap up around the camera pole and to the gopro once it's in place. If you want you can shoot me a PM with your email or get a hold of mine on my main channel page and I can take some pictures and measurements and send them to you.

I did get to the YAK GEAR site and found the cleat anyway. Thanks.
No nylon ring as of yet.
By the way if you were to provide to me detailed drawing and/or steps re: your camera systems I would be willing to pay you for them... It's just a thought.
Of course you may enjoy having the one of a kind Kayak and I don't blame you.
Although I am in another country, lol.

Anyway thanks again, back to tinkering.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
The nylon ring and mini zig zag cleat are both made by Yak-gear, I ordered both from Austin Kayak. I made a spacer from a 1/16"*3/4" strip of aluminum to go between the cleat and slide track rail and another piece of 1/8"*1/2" aluminum with holes drilled and tapped for 10-32 screws went into the track to screw the cleat down to. I get my HDPE from TAP Plastics. The stuff I use is called King Starboard. There's a minimum of $10 per piece for cut to size so you can play with the dimensions to get the most for your money.

I think the Pelican Catch 120 is one of the best deals for a sit on top kayak right now. $750 new and they have a nice folding chair style seat and are supposed to be plenty stable for standing on. The Pelican Strike and Perception Pescador are a couple more lower priced SOT's. Sit inside kayaks are quite a bit cheaper, lighter, and easier to transport but for fishing I'd definitely recommend a sit on top. You could try checking Craigslist for used kayaks for sale too or if you have anyplace nearby that rents them sometimes they'll have some used ones for sale.

Thanks for responding.Given what I've seen from your videos I'm surprised you didn't make a remote controlled dolly for your Tarpon. I just purchased the Tarpon 120 Angler yesterday. Your "My Tarpon 120" vids were instrumental in my decision process. It's hanging in the garage calling me, I may have to throw it in the pool just so I can get into it on some water. There are so many lakes and small tributaries in this area to tour and fish, many of which I will have only a path by which to gain water access.Just wondering if its worth making my own dolly or buying. I'll check out the both options. All the best.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
It's a tough call on buying or making a dolly. I got mine on sale for around $50 so that made the decision a little easier for me. I was also a little concerned about puling a homemade pvc one over rough terrain and having it break if I hit a bump too hard. I haven't used it yet but I've been checking out a couple spots on Google maps I might need it to get to this summer. Most of the time I can get away with pulling my kayak with a pull strap if I cant get close enough to the water. Grass, dirt, and sand won't do much harm to the hull if you have to pull it a short distance.

I've been meaning to do something like that. I've been so busy at work lately my main goal right now is to just hit the water and catch some fish lol. I'll be getting more time off soon though, just as the pre spawn bite should really start heating up. I'll give you a few tips on the H1 until I can get a video made.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            I keep mine set to 44kHz/16bit/WAV. My video editor outputs the audio in 44/16 so I like to keep the Zoom at those same settings and WAV will give you better quality than mp3. The auto level and low cut switch on the back I turn off and take care of that in my audio editing program. For the input level I'll keep mine around 70 with my kayak camera rigs. I'll adjust it for other situations, you basically want it set as high as you can without ever having the red peak light come on.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Once I get back home and dump all the files onto my computer I'll take the ones I want to use and open them in my audio editor. The first thing I'll do is boost the master gain by around 18db to increase the volume. Next I run an EQ on them, mostly just a high and low pass filter. I'll set the high pass around 85Hz with a 48dB/octave slope to get rid of a lot of the wind noise. The high pass I set around 10.5kHz, also with a 48dB/octave slope to get rid of some of the recorder noise and high end harshness. After those steps there will most likely be several spots that will "clip" or cause distortion. Usually high frequency noises like smacking rods against the kayak or fish jumping, you'll be able to see these spots on a wave chart by looking for any peaks that go above or below the 0dB reference line. These need to be toned down back below the 0db line to prevent distortion so I'll zoom in and highlight those areas to decrease the volume. This is usually the last step I'll do before rendering the track to swap into the video. It can be a little time consuming so I wait until I get all the files lined up and cropped in my multi track mixer to tone down those loud spots, that way I'm not doing it on parts of the audio files I wont end up using.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             One more thing I'd recommend if you plan on using the H1 a lot, especially on longer outings, is to invest in a set of the white label Eneloop batteries and a charger. You can probably get a set of four and charger for under $20. I'll get around 8 hours record time on Eneloops compared to maybe 3-4 on alkalines. They can be charged something like 2000 times too, I'm still on my original set of four I picked up in 2012 and they get a lot of use. A lapel mic is good to have too, mine does a lot better on windy days than the Zoom's on board mics. I use a cheap Audio Technica ATR-3350 and it works great. They work best with the Zoom if you cut out the battery holder part and solder the wires back together without it. It will run hotter with the Zoom's built in power supply. Lapel mics only pick up one channel so there is an extra step in editing to switch it to both channels.

SWEET set up. I've been fishing from a Pungo 120 sit inside. This video has helped me make up my mind for my next one. The only thing stopping me is I dont know how dry you stay in the Tarpon. I do alot of spring fishing when the ice isnt all the way off the lakes. I dont mind water from the paddling or catching fish....but how dry do you stay when just regular lake fishing with a slight chop? And does water shoot up when you cross boat wakes? Thanks for the video and you time!

I stay pretty dry in my Tarpon, other than getting splashed by fish. As long as the wind is under 15mph it doesn't get choppy enough that I get sprayed by waves as I paddle along. If the wind is stronger than that I'll usually stay home or try to find a calm stretch of river to fish. I've paddled through white caps on several occasions though and as long as I hit them at the right angle I'll stay dry. The Tarpon hill as a couple scrupper holes under the seat that come plugged from the factory. Mine popped out at some point but I didn't bother putting them back in. Only twice I've felt water come up and soak my seat. Once was when I took the kayak over a small dam, the other time some a-hole in a bass boat flew by about ten feet in front of me and water shot up under the seat as his wake passed me.

I always take the battery out at the end of the day. The battery box is glued to the hull inside the front hatch so all I have to do is open the lid and pull the terminal clips off the battery to remove it, only takes a few seconds. My kayak sits on it's side on my trailer so I don't trust the battery box to remain glued in place if I leave the 7lb battery in it while in transport. I also keep my trailer and kayaks in a storage garage so I don't have a power outlet to plug a charger into. If circumstances were different though I'd definitely add a plug I could easily hook a charger up to.

I just used the transducer that came with my humminbird 386di. Side imaging is about the only thing that won't work through the hull. I used marine goop to glue mine down. Squeeze a good size glob of it on the bottom of the transducer and press it against the spot on the hull where you want it, trying not to get air bubbles in the glue in the process. I kept mine from sliding around with a few strips of duct tape and added some weight on top of it to keep it pressed down while it dried. I let my kayak sit still for a few days to make sure the glue dries completely.

Hey man love your videos, getting my own fishing kayak soon and I was wondering with the transducer glued on the inside of the kayak with marine glue have you had any problems what so ever? It's still pretty accurate. I've compared readings to a few transom mount units and mine was always within 1-2 degrees. It will take a half hour or so after launching sometimes for everything to acclimate to the water temperature so it might be off a little bit at first.
Phillip Kolesinski
Phillip Kolesinski - 8 years ago
+NDYakAngler awesome thanks for the response. With the transducer being inside the kayak also do you still get accurate water temp readings?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I used Marine Goop to glue in the transducer and to seal around the wires where they go through under the base of the fish finder. I did have to drill a hole to run them through. That mounting spot is a pretty standard size so it would be easy to cover it with something if I ever wanted to remove the fish finder. The only problem I ever had was with my other kayak, the transducer went out after a few years which isn't uncommon. I was able to pry the old one off and remove the rest of the glue stuck to the kayak when I replaced it.

NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
Thanks DeOnna! It's been five years now since I got my first kayak, the mango color Tarpon 120 in my videos from before last summer. I planned on fishing from it and received it around this time of year so while I waited for the lakes to thaw out I got my first milk crate built with some rod holders and installed a fish finder and anchor trolley. The first trip out I went to a small pond with a friend who also just got his first kayak. I was a little worried about tipping so I packed light, just one fishing rod and I made sure to tie a leash to all my gear that could be lost if I flipped. The kayak was a lot more stable than I thought it would be. It only took about 5 minutes to get a feel for it and the thought of falling in disappeared. The only time I've ever gone in since then was last fall when I was standing on it in some river current and lost my balance. One thing I'd recommend doing once the water is warm enough is to take the kayak out to a shallow spot with just a paddle and a pfd and intentionally flip it a few times to test its limits and try a couple re-entry techniques.

do you get water pooling under the seat? I do
Capt Mike
Capt Mike - 8 years ago
+NDYakAngler thanks, I must have not unplugged it
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I've never had that problem. The scrupper holes under the seat come plugged from the factory, the plugs in mine must have been knocked out at some point. When I paddle through a big wave or go over a dam water will splash up through the holes sometimes and get my seat wet. I'm not sure if you can completely remove those plugs without taking the seat off but you could probably pop them out through the bottom with a stick or something. I'd only do that if you mostly use it on calm water though, anything really choppy and you'll get water splashing up through the holes.

Thought that you may like this being the electronic guru you seem to be. Would be cool to add on to each side of the front of the yak to have some great light for night fishing. Waterproof system you could integrate into your existing battery ..

do you plug the scupper holes in the back cargo area? i'm going to start fishing on my 120 and I assume you plug the back?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I leave them all open. The water level is still well below the top with all my gear loaded up. Some water will come up if it's really choppy or I tilt one way or the other but it drains back out when I'm level again. The only time I might throw them in is if I'm paddling through a lot of scum and surface weed mats. I've been in that stuff a few times when a water bug hatch was going on and they climbed up those back holes and pretty much covered my milk crate.

If you have any sporting goods stores that sell kayaks nearby they'd be worth checking out. During winter they'll often have them on sale to make room for the new kayaks coming in this spring. The Scheel's sports store here had my Tarpon 120 for $699 last winter, although color choices were limited. Both of mine I ended up ordering online from Austin Kayak. They have them listed at MSRP but when you add them to the cart it deducts $60, which is about what they charge to have it shipped so it basically works out to free shipping. ACK does a package deal that adds a cheap paddle and a decent NRS pfd too which for $30 more is worth it just for the pfd.

Love your videos man, better than 95% of fishing shows on TV, because it's not 100% product placement haha. Quick question about how you mounted your transducer, you say it's through the hull. Did you use the stock one that came with the Humminbird 386ci Di or did you have to buy a different one to use through the hull? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the video.I am picking up my new Tarpon 120 tomorrow and I am really keen to set it up for fishing as I live near the beach in South Australia and fishing Kayaking has boomed down here.No more casting from the shoreline anymore.Once I get familiar with the Kayak I will be installing a fish finder with GPS so it was great to see how you had set yours up.Thanks again for taking the time to create this video.Cheers from Rick

Thanks Rick, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Somehow your comment ended up in my spam folder so I just came across it. Hopefully by now you've had a chance to try out your new kayak! It's always a good idea to take it out once or twice before installing anything just to make sure your intended mounting locations will work out. If the water is warm enough there I'd take it out empty to a calm spot in about chest deep water and test its limits by tipping over and practicing re-entry a few times too. Have fun and be safe out there!

I have noticed on YouTube, that a lot of people who are just getting into kayaking, go with the Ascend FS12T from Bass Pro Shops.  Then, after a  year or so, will purchase one that's a little more expensive.  Do you know of anyone, who has a Ascend FS12T?  If you were just starting out, would you go with an Ascend Kayak?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I can't think of anyone I know with that kayak, probably because there isn't a bass pro shops anywhere around here though. It does seem like a popular beginner kayak along with some of the Pelicans and I've noticed the upgrade it after a year quite a bit too. For my first kayak I was looking at a Pelican Castaway at Gander Mountain before I went online and found the Tarpon for a few hundred more. I'm glad I went with the Tarpon, it was definitely worth the extra money to be comfortable sitting in it all day and I really like the way it's set up. The FS12T does look like a decent kayak for the price and if that's all someone can afford I'd tell them to go for it, even if they upgrade after a year its always nice to have a spare kayak around to take a friend with. If they're really into fishing and have their eye on a nicer kayak though and money isn't an issue I'd tell them to get the one they really want.

If you could, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Do a step by step walk through of all the electrical parts to your cameras. What you used and the names. Cause I really like your set up but it's to complicated without a explanation
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
No problem! It was a complicated project, probably around 150-200 hours of time planning and building everything for both the camera rigs. A lot of work could be saved on the milk crate rig by leaving the power cord outside the camera pole. Having the battery/voltage converter in the crate with enough cord to wrap around the pole and up to the camera once its in place would have made things a lot easier. There's more aftermarket options becoming available for supplying power to a Gopro too so if I had to rebuild the camera rigs I'm not sure I'd go this same route. I'm considering switching over this winter from the heavy lead acid 12v battery to a lithium power supply also. Those usually have a 5v output that I could run directly to the gopro so if I go that route I'll have to tear apart the milk crate portion of the rig and re-wire it. If I do that I'll make sure to video the process.
Taylor Rocheleau
Taylor Rocheleau - 8 years ago
+NDYakAngler yeah cause I got my dad to look at it and he was very amazed at how well you designed it. And thank you for the explanation
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
There's a link in the info box for the mini usb plugs I used with the Gopro and the 12-5v converters can be found on ebay. Pretty much everything else I built from scratch using hdpe plastic and 1/8" copper rod for the electrical connectors at the end of the camera pole and inside the receiving end. I might do a basic "how to power a Gopro" video this winter or explain the camera rigs a little further but a lot of it is glued together so I can only show so much.

I'd be really interested in learning more about how you create your GoPro set up and installing your battery chargers. Thanks!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
If I take everything apart for a cleaning this winter I'll do a quick video showing the camera mounts in more detail. All you have to do to have the Gopro always charging is run a 5v signal to it. I used a 12v battery with a 12-5v converter I ordered from AliExpress although a simple car usb charger can be used as well. I had to put a hole in the Gopro case for the plug to go through so its not waterproof any more. I also used parts from Charge Converter to make my own usb cords. There's a link in the info box to the page and they have a link there for a pinout of the mini usb plug that shows what each pin inside needs to connected to.

Can these kayaks go up stream?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I paddled it upstream to this spot. The hard spots to get through are generally the shallow spots where the current picks up but I'll hop out and pull it through those if it's easier. At the speed this river flows anything over a foot deep is pretty easy to paddle upstream against.

Hi.  I went on the Wilderness Systems website and checked out the Tarpon 120.  I really like the look of the Tarpon 120, especially in the (Mango) color.  Is yours the Flint or Desert Camo color?  I also checked out the A.T.A.K. kayak, it's nice too, but alittle more money.  Do you have a Wilderness Systems dealer by you?  Later bud...
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I have the regular green camo, didn't see it on their website any more but I'm sure some dealers still have that color. My old one was mango color which is good for lakes with a little more traffic. Scheels usually has a couple 120s in stock here in Fargo but I've ordered all three of mine from Austin kayak. They're great kayaks as long as you don't really plan on standing in it. The only time I've gone over board was a few weeks ago, I was standing up and the current started to rotate me. I stuck my paddle into the ground to try to regain my balance but it sunk in and I went for a swim.

Hey ... $550 a good price for a 2013 used tarpon 120?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I tow mine on a trailer so I only have to lift it about waist high. They aren't extremely heavy but the awkward shape might make lifting it on top of a taller vehicle difficult. A couple of my friends who put theirs on top of suv's usually lift one end onto the back roof rack bar and grab the lower end of the kayak and slide it the rest of the way on.

It was a tough choice between the two. I decided to stick with the Tarpon because I spend most of my time on rivers and when I'm fishing lakes I like to cover a lot of area. The Tarpon is a little faster and better at cutting through river current. I'm still considering picking up a Ride in another year or two so I have something I can stand and fish from when I hit some smaller lakes.

Nice kayak. I just picked up the Ride 135. Happy fishing.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
+Tim Martin Thanks! To swap the audio I'll make a copy of the final video with the native Gopro audio then extract a copy of the audio from it to use in Adobe Audition. Once I have that opened I'll add the Zoom H1 files, line them up, trim them to match the start and end points, do a little EQ work and export the replacement audio file. Then all I have to do is go back to the video editor and mute the native audio, add the replacement file and I'm ready to export the final video with new audio. This one was pretty easy, the fishing videos where I have 20-25 different clips to set the audio to get a little more complicated. There are many other programs that will let you swap audio too and probably a tutorial here on youtube for each one.

Killer new setup! I just finished my crate and was worried about the rods that I have in the crate rod holders getting caught in trees when I'm on the river...Thinking that my crate may only be useful for ponds and lakes which would be pretty disappointing since I fish rivers 90% of the time
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
+btratcat23 Thanks! That's another reason I decided to angle the rod holders back, at least if I'm moving forward they'll easily bend and slide under any low branches. My old crates had them sticking straight up in the air and I never had much of a problem. Most of the time I stay out of the trees and just cast my lure into them. If I have to go in to retrieve a snag or cool off in the shade for a while I'll pull the rods out of the crate and lay them down between my legs.

NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
+Andrew Craig I made them from 3/8" ABS plastic. I drew out a plan first then transferred it over to a sheet of plastic and started cutting and sanding. I used an Irwin bit and tap to put threaded holes into the ABS part so the RAM base screws directly into it and added a couple larger holes at the two ends for the slide trax screws. One trick I used to get the nice smooth edges is to lay down an old fish finder battery on a piece of sandpaper and use it to hold the piece against as I'm sanding it.

+skfish I agree. NDYakAngler is the best at details. I too envy his camera and mic powering. I used some 5/16" 4-40 screws that went through the 1/8" and screwed directly into the 1/4" plastic behind it. I used a cheap Irwin bit and tap to make the threaded holes in the 1/4" piece and countersunk the holes on the front side of the 1/8" so the screws sit flush when its put together. Pretty similar method to attach it to the crate, I used 3/4" 4-40 screws through the outside of the crate and into the ends of the 1/4" at all four spots they meet.

Great video and a very well thought out set up. What river is that on? I used to live in Moorhead and my brother still lives there. He just bought a NuCanoe and he's excited to get into Kayak Fishing.

That looks like a tactical kayak right there! That is awesome!!! Love the color and that was creative replacing the stock screws with black screws. That was a really creative setup! Nice job!

NDYakAngler did the replacement screws go in nice and tight? Factory screws look to be self taping.

+sgtryan98 Thanks man! I think the black screws make it look a lot nicer! I wish they'd use them at the WS factory.

+chreim20 Thanks! I generally fish shorter length med action fast-xfast rods. The ones I use most fishing rivers for smallmouth are my two St Croix Legend Tournament 5'10" M XF spinning rods with Pflueger Patriarch 9530's and a Legend Tournament 6'8" M XF casting with a Quantum Smoke SL100HPT.

Brilliant mods, do you have or can you recommend any vids on how you made the camera mounts with the power supplies?

+The Urban Sportsman Thanks! I designed and built pretty much everything myself except for the ball heads at the top of the camera poles. I didn't film any of the building process because I have probably 100 hours of work into each of the camera rigs so it was already time consuming enough. I was also working with limited tools, I used a cheap drill press as a makeshift lathe and a big nail sharpened down to a cutting point to machine out most of the round plastic parts so I didn't want anybody trying to copy me ending up injuring themselves. I came close a couple times lol. A simpler way to run power up to the camera on something like the crate mount would be to just leave the electronics out of the pole and have a long enough cord coming from the power supply in the crate to wrap around the pole and up to the camera once its in place.
