I am hoping to purchase this Kayak in the Summer 2018 but I am confussed about the battery setup. The battery in the back that you say runs the lights etc. is extremely large compared to the one in the front that runs the motor. I want to know if I can buy a battery that will run the motor all day?
J M
J M - 6 years ago
Fast? I highly doubt that. Heavy as hell? Yes! Really people.... If you need all that on a Kayak and you are one of the few that can actually afford it. Just buy a damn boat. My back hurts just from looking at that thing and imagining having to load and unload it.

Anyone know if it still has the insect recess that protects the sonar for the fish finder ? Sounds perfect if so , the only other thing I could ask for is horizontal reel storage I fish in places with lots of overhanging trees and low bridges and vertical rod storage just does not work for me.

KayakDIY yeah I had the chance to use a Hobie peddle kayak in Tahoe and it was great on the water....but a bear to load, unload and transport from vehicle to shore. Then placing the pedal system in and out when coming to shore was kind of a pain. I like it simple, plus I've had to use my paddle once to shove a sea lion trying to board my yak, not fun, but funny.
KayakDIY

Pedal kayaks are for more than rich people. Fisherman like having hands free to fish. Although in my opinion it is hard to beat a great paddle kayak for true on the water performance. I’m getting a Viking kayak shipped as we speak.

hobie pro anger better way to go
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Devin Rex loved my Hobie PA and disliked it. Certainly some issues with flex in the deck which I didn't care for on the Hobie's. I weigh less than 200lbs yet every Hobie I have owned seems to flex a lot on the deck. I knew this and still bought the Hobie TI but something I dislike about Hobie's. Even my Pelican kayaks for few hundred dollars had less flex and felt more solid on the decks. I basically love them for their pedal drive but think the hulls could use some stiffening features on topside. Just opinion I have. I keep it reel :)
Love the Dorado but price is a bit rich. However, I think the craftsmanship is there.

To entice more buyers, consider offering the following oem options: Lithium ion extended runtime battery, fishing tackle box to fit on rails for larger items, amas to increase stability in big water while fishing, a kayak stern flag with navigation light that would plug into kayak power system and a custom feelfree bimini. Looks like a kayak with great potential.

There was a kayak demo in my area (Corpus Christi Tx.) and there was pretty much every brand and style of kayak available with exception to the Hobie line. The Darado was the one I was excited the most as far as trying out. It is extremely heavy!!!!! It is not a fast moving kayak by any means. Extremely stable with a lot of features...... but if you're planning on covering a large area of water you might want to consider something lighter. If your fishing a lake or pond I think it would be great. I fish salt water in the Gulf so I don't think it will work for me.

KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+devestv you are not alone in that. It certainly isn't for everyone. I never thought I would pay $6,700 for a kayak but I eventually bought the Hobie TI. I love it. Less maintenance, low cost of ownership, and loads of fun. Although you are correct in that many power boats can be had for less. I do think we are hitting a peak of what folks are willing to spend. I think manufacturers need to fill in the gap with more $1,000-2,000 priced pedal kayaks. I know they can make it happen. Might not offer tons of accessories and be plain but think they can do it.

Looks good but there are always obstacles to confront such as you cannot use it in shallow water because of the prop and the Kayak or canoe could weights a tonne to put it on a 4x4 roof rack. It's only good for deeper water. It would have been nicer if the prop was behind and flexible like an outboard so that if it hits a submerged rock it will lift up and not damage the blades.

Agree that kayaks certainly have been getting pricey and many didn't see it coming. If we look at bicycles there are Walmart bicycles and there are several thousand dollar bicycles that those competing want. I see this as a similar situation. I at least believe that FeelFree exhibited the most innovation in their kayak. The integrated motor pedal system was unique. I agree with your statement...you could buy a 16' skiff/drift boat for similar money.

I thought the idea of a kayak was to be simple small light boat to just get out to fish or paddle. This is kayak is awesome yet its tying to be a boat.. Nothing but raw paddle power but it is an efficient fast moving offshore beast. The purists in kayaking will appreciate the lines of it and design. It was designed simply to move well on the ocean and include the bare necessities of kayak fishing. It has clean lines and minimal snag points. Large pelagics have been caught on them.

At one point do we stop considering shit like this a kayak?
Miller Reid
Miller Reid - 7 years ago
KayakDIY I understand that but I just think of kayak fishing being the simple way. Paddling having to work to get where you want to be and just the simplicity of a kayak and cheaper(under 2k) so that everyone can do it. When you start adding things like a motor basically like this I feel like it's not kayaking anymore. It's a small boat no a kayak
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Miller Reid it is all a personal preference. It still can go where many boats can't. You however are not the only person to make such a statement.

Nice and made me want one until I saw price, you can get a Hobie for that price. But nice Kayak and I like how Feelfree is evolving
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Brian Douglas Hobie's are great but don't let others tell you what is best. Always test for yourself. I will always give an honest opinion if asked. I really liked the Dorado. I have owned multiple Hobie's and they are not without faults. For one I found the deck on the Dorado to be stiffer than the Hobie PA14 which flexed quite a bit. Some flex is good for kayaks but I think Hobie could improve their deck strength. With that said I still obviously love Hobie. I own a $7k one.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
Yes you can, but coming from someone who owns Hobies....I was highly impressed by the Dorado and a few other pedal drive kayaks at iCAST.

Stay tuned to channel. I will be uploading new iCAST 2017 product videos nearly every day. Tons of new kayaks and gear that folks will love.

Looks like a stealth yak (sweet)....issues that I'm seeing...weight....handles are not rounded to load yak on a truck/suv so you this is going to be a pain to load up/drag in the sand....Looks fatter that the lure....love my lure but that thing is slow and a rudder is a must.....which brings me to the last point.....price....this yak will coast more than my truck!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Travis West it does have a rudder. Although your other comments are legitimate concerns. Hope to get one on the water and test. The Pro Angler 14 is no peach to transport either. Lol

Price? Weight? Weight capacity?

Also the front and back storage areas are pretty useless. Too far away
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
jon snow didn't get much info on weight due to this kayak still being tweaked and refined. We do have price details listed. With all our videos I recommend checking out the video description section to get the most updated info. I like doing it that way because if something changes in design i can't always edit/update the video but I can usually change the description area easily. Since many of the kayaks are prototypes at iCAST things can be subject to change.

We filmed the Radar last year at iCAST 2016. Agree for many it is a fine line. The ease of use/transport is important for many people. This one doesn't seem much more difficult to use or transport than any other pedal drive fishing kayak. All a matter of preference.
MrZepontiff
MrZepontiff - 7 years ago
Don't forget about WS Radar. To me thats kinda the sweet spot. $1500 for just the yak then later $1k to add pedal drive. If these get anymore bonkers they defeat the purpose of having something easy to transport and throw in where boats can't go. Craigslist offers multitudes of 12ft aluminum and jons.

gabe428 3K for this kayak puts it leaps and bounds ahead of competition. PA $3600 Titan $3300 I personally was stoked when I heard it was only 3 k and came with all the lights etc. I can understand your perspective though. We are getting away from traditional $1000- $1800 fishing yaks that's for sure. With that said there is a lot of great stuff coming out in that range as well. Great time to be a kayak fisherman with more options than ever before!

Headwaters Kayak... headwaters kayaks asked DIY same question maybe you know answer..
the cool design of having the track above the kayak at deck area itself not touching kayak looks great for putting Plano boxes, lures, pliers, etc in those compartments but it does look like water can come over deck and get in those compartments, was there any discussion about that?, is the area going to catch water or does the water disperse out of those compartments somehow. Thsk again.
