Because non Australians have no real idea of Australia, its size or where things are, so they would have asked Damian and Justin where they were from, and they probably simplified it when the looks of confusion occurred when they said Queensland or whatever, and just said Im from the eastern parts - he's from the west ??? Or something similar.
I know when I fished in the states and Canada 18 months ago - I would describe myself as living 3 hrs from Sydney, some got that, but most then needed - its on the east coast. The joys of being Australian, over seas.

The east coast of Australia, as apposed to the west coast - which is a long way away. Think San Fran to Washington. Queensland is one of the states on the East coast. The bulk of the population live on the eastern side of Australia, and the bulk of that number on or near the coast.
