Hi at Ben. I hope you still see these comments. I'm super interested in getting the Oru Bay. Now that you've had it for a year what are your thoughts? Is it more or less durable than you originally thought? Have you used the Bay in calm ocean conditions? You mentioned the Bay was less stable. Is that just for loading or do you feel it's less stable in the water? I want to buy but so nervous because it's not a small investment, but if it works well then it's worth it to me.

I live in Sydney Australia, I'm seriously having trouble to choose which model above to buy. Does the BEACH model have any capability against any waves such as a bay condition? or you can only use it in still water like a lake? However it looks really more comfortable than the BAY model. Really hard for me to choose.

Nice Kayaks but indeed, VASTLY over priced, at least from looking at their web page. The real value is nowhere near the MSRP. An old Folboat sailor and paddler from the 60s.

They seem a bit overpriced, most likely due to their unique construction, but seems like a good investment as Emergency or light recreation kayak.

if it or when it fails, be it a hole or crack, you could always keep a small fiberglass kit with you. Or even do a whole fiberglass wrap after the 20k+ wear from regular use you mentioned.

I used to use that same material as signage. It will be brittle junk in a couple of years. Also, folding plastic constantly is always going to cause failure eventually and creates tension that will be really weak to any impact. I can't believe people pay so much for a product that is guaranteed to fail.

This looks fantastic for someone who is perfectly capable of paddling on my own save carrying my kayak around. We already have a fleet of kayaks: inflatable, rotomolded, and airalite, but I cannot carry any of them easily, and kayaking is one of the things I love to do. Thanks for sharing this, it looks incredible and I will definitely want to find out more. Any idea if you can roof rack it though, or does it have to be folded between trips?

$1300 for coroplast sheets and a few buckles?! Gtfo. Sweet concept, but insanely overpriced
Beast Ala Mode
Beast Ala Mode - 7 years ago
Living Survival I'm not saying it isn't a very cool product, at $500-600 it's would be almost a no brainer for occasional use. At $1,300 there are much more durable and capable options.
Beast Ala Mode
Beast Ala Mode - 7 years ago
Living Survival less than $150 in materials. I'm not saying they shouldn't be compensated for their design, but let's not get this twisted, marking up a product 100x is asinine. Especially for a temporary product. This kayak won't last long term, not compared to traditional kayaks that are similarly priced. These aren't being used in true survival situations. A large portion of the markup on traditional kayaks is simply the shipping costs getting them to retailers or customers. This is an overpriced toy for folks with more money than brains.
Living Survival
Living Survival - 7 years ago
i meant the the main material isn't the only part. bow and stern covers, fasteners, seat, pads, hull supports etc. tell you what, make one up, then make a video on it and tell everyone how cheap you made it for and then market it and sell it around the world!
Beast Ala Mode

Living Survival
Living Survival - 7 years ago
when you buy a product you are paying for the idea, the design, the labor, the fasteners, the materials (which are much more than coroplast), the marketing, the packaging etc. Welcome to creating a product and marketing it to consumers. Could you make one on your own, sure good luck with that. It is priced accordingly and made in the USA. I'm sure if it was made in China it would be less so maybe you can wait for that.

Phrancis5 - 7 years ago
@Scott 1 Why leave so many comments attacking something you assume is dangerous and flimsy? Have you actually owned one? It's certainly not a good buy from the performance/value standpoint, but the portability might be invaluable to some. I owned a dozen hardshell 14-17ft touring kayaks and even built my latest one (mahogany and fiberglass), as well as carved my greenland paddles. I have also test paddle one of the 12ft Oru kayaks and was impressed with its tracking, efficiency, edge turns, etc... I assumed the materials and construction had to be flimsy, but they weren't. For the $ you could certainly get a better performing hardshell kayak, but if I lived in a downtown apt with no garage or didn't own a car for transport, I'd strongly consider one of these over inflatables or heavier Folboats. My 43lb Arctic Tern 17 is already considered a lightweight Greenland style touring yak, but I wouldn't mind an Oru Bay just for day trips and impromptu paddles.

I remember seeing these when they first started popping up on Instagram, really cool idea and concept especially as something to keep in your car or for the people who might want a "bug out" yak lol, but just not practical for me when I saw the price vs what I could get for he same amount elsewhere.
I admit I am able to have my Ocean Kayak BGProwler because I have a storage unit it fits in but still, for $1300 and only a capacity of 300lbs, people
could get a real kayak that will last way longer. I can guarantee this would not have made it through this last 95mile trip I did, one buckle breaks or piece of plastic and then what? I can patch my kayak if a hole gets warn into it ya know?
I consider this an expensive recreational kayak.
If it works for you though man awesome, we all have our preferences and that's what great about products. If you don't like something then don't buy it ya know?

Living Survival you know, when you think about it that way, it doesn't make sense. You're going to spend five to $600 on a kayak and another five to $600 on a rack so you're right there anyway. And then you don't have all that stuff in the air dragging down your gas mileage too.

I'm the type of person who if I'm not in the woods or on the river, then I'm probably in the middle of plaining my next trip to the woods or the river. In 2014 I lived in town in a small apartment and I only had a car to get around in. I ended up not being able to do a lot of river trips because I just didn't have the space for a watercraft and no way to transport it. Spring of 2015 I coat wind of what Oru was doing building these folding kayaks and I  got my self a 12ft 2015 bay and loved it. I used it through the spring and summer for several multi day river trips and loved it. If you don't want to spend 1200 for the bay from REI or ORU, you can get an older model now for under 1000 if you do some searching. I think Sam's club was actually selling them for 500 at one point. But I will say that the new 2017 models are nice. That's why I've sold my 2015 bay and I'm waiting for REI to send me my Coast XT any day now.

The Traveling Together Journal
The Traveling Together Journal - 7 years ago
I have decided to go with a tandem by advanced elements. It can be paddled by one or two people. It's a bit heavy but I'd have to buy two ORUs and two will be heavier and take up more room in the car. The kayaks are cheaper and I only buy one. They are less than $1000 and have great reviews.
Phrancis5

Yeah, any decent lightweight (new) kayak will cost north of $1k. The Oru is not the best buy from the performance/value standpoint, but the portability might be invaluable to some. I owned several 14-17ft touring kayaks and even built my latest one (Pygmy), but I did test-paddle one of the 12ft Oru kayaks and was impressed with its tracking, efficiency, edge turns, etc... For $1500 you could certainly get a better performing hardshell kayak, but if I still lived in a downtown apt with no garage or didn't own a car for transport, I'd strongly consider one of these over inflatables or heavier Folboats. I really appreciated this review. As long-term overlanders, we try to have lots of gear that helps us experience the natural world to the fullest. We didn't bring a kayak for the big trip and I regretted it so many times, but we just didn't have the room. As we plan the next pat of our trip I'm looking into these folding kayaks. That is a lot of money, but the extra space is valuable when you live full time in a vehical.

Dick's Sporting Goods doesn't sell good Kayaks, if you're more than an occasional recreational Kayaker. The materials alone are not as UV and heat resistant, and as thick and impact resistant as the higher end brands you find at REI or a similar place. Also, a few of them are poorly shaped to be able to roll if you dump and need to roll or rescue.

That said, if you are a recreational Kayaker who likes to go out sometimes in the summer, you don't need to worry about those things and these boats aren't terrible for those needs. And their sit-on-tops are actually not bad, if you like those.

Amazon can be good, but you can't see the boat before buying if you're buying used.
If you love Kayaking and are considering making it a part of your outdoor life, make sure to go to rentals and lesson clubs in your area to try all kinds of brands before deciding what you want and what would work best for you.
A Pseudonym
A Pseudonym - 7 years ago
If you want a high end Kayak for less, check Kayak clubs and rental companies in your area. They always sell their used boats at the end of a season or two for at least half of what they're worth. They will almost always fix any damage beforehand too, but you could probably talk down the price more if the boat needed thigh pads replaced, for instance, and you say you can do that yourself if you get a little more off the boat.

This also gives you the option to go see the boat and check it out before you buy, (unlike buying from Amazon or Ebay used), so you can make sure it's in good condition. Usually such places will even let you test it first if you're serious about buying.

Another resource is Craig's List, you get all the benefits listed above and often the boat costs even less and you usually see gear included in the price.

Packable Kayaks are great if you have no space or need portability, but you definitely pay for the newer tech materials and design. It's worth it if you need it, definitely not if you don't. You can find used Orus on Ebay, sometimes for a fraction of the cost. I saw a Bay+ go for $580 last week.

Myself, I need a portable and am torn between Oru and Pakayak.
Great Video, @LIving Survival! Thanks for this. =)

I don't think Ben is being unreasonable here.

If you don't want or can't afford a $1300 foldable kayak, don't buy a $1300 foldable kayak. What the OP neglected to mention when he said "I can buy 4" is that he absolutely cannot buy 4 foldable, lightweight, compact kayaks that don't need any other equipment, like a $300 roof rack (Well, I guess you don't need it if you are ok with your vehicle being damaged). Also, can you keep all 4 of those kayaks in your apartment?

If you want convenience, you pay for convenience. If you don't want convenience, you don't pay for convenience, end of story. He didn't do this video because he wanted to cover kayaks, he did the video because he wanted to cover a kayak that fit his needs and was useful in his situation, which happens to be a compact, lightweight kayak that he can keep in his place.

I love your videos Ben. Keep it up, and thanks for the reviews.
Living Survival

wasn't talking down on anyone. the original comment was that he could get 4 kayaks for the price of this one. and that's great. to each their own. this kayak fits my purpose as it is foldable and fits in a closet and does not need a car rack to transport. so....although there are more affordable options, this isn't one of them. if you have a problem with that don't watch. i do plenty of affordable gear and again it is what I use not what I think my audience will like which is what other channels do.

The point of my comment was that you were talking down on someone that didn't have the disposable income that you obviously do.

I'm sure there are plenty of videos on any kayak you want.

Living Survival what about for your viewers who cant afford a 800 dollar kayak
Living Survival
Living Survival - 7 years ago
the other kayaks I was researching were the jackson tupelo, old town loon and the wilderness systems pungo. I believe they were all $800-$1000. keep in mind for me i want a durable fishing or multi-day kayak and the cheaper options (pelican) just don't work for me. I've rented them and they are great for just kicking around for an hour or two but for serious travel or time on the water no thanks.

Living Survival Could you review some more affordable kayak options then, considering you review products ranging from expensive to affordable?
Living Survival
Living Survival - 7 years ago
my videos have always been and always will be based on the gear I own and gear i use. I do a mix of expensive and affordable options however I see fit. for this product it is perfect for me in an apartment regardless of price. that's great that you never owned a $1000 kayak.

Living Survival smh at you @livingsurvival - just because someone can't afford a $1000 Kayak you're going to try to shame them? I started following you based on your gear reviews but recently (not counting your "cheap hammock" review) your videos are all super high-end gear options. Btw, my backyard is the Chattahoochee so I have weekly time on the water and have never owned a $1000 kayak.

The advantages of these are why I went to packrafts. My packrafts aren't as fast but they're lighter likely more stable and pack smaller.

Thanks, I will. in fact I was just paddling on Lake Ontario yesterday. A bit breezy, but we still managed and enjoyed ourselves.

Have fun using an inflatable on any sort of flatwater, giant windsail they are.
Jim McCarthy
Jim McCarthy - 7 years ago
A high quality inflatable is faster to set up (fill time), weight is around the same, cost is lower, performance can be better than Oru (depending on make/model), stability much better, able to better carry more gear. I've paddled the Oru and was not impressed, but since I'm a longtime paddler (some day old), there ae features and performance that I want, especially considering all the short cuts with Oru vs their cost. Are they a good kayak? Sure. But in my view, there are better choices if looking for portability, performance on the water, ease of setup, and cost.
FlashGeiger
FlashGeiger - 7 years ago
Packrafts are low pressure, so it's just a few minutes of non strenuous activity pushing air from a pillowcase into the boat. Inflatable kayaks are likely higher pressure and need pumps of some sort, I expect. Deflation isn't any harder than for air mattresses (although it is wetter).

Those kayaks are likely faster, so if you aren't going to be backpacking them they're a good choice, I imagine. But I portage my packraft so the 6 lb weight is an advantage.

FlashGeiger I thought about an inflatable but the hassle of inflation and deflation kept me from buying.

Matt Burkett well there's inflatables and stacking conoes which seem sturdier and less expensive. or you could make your own? look up Paul Elkans, you can make something similar for well under three hundred bucks.

Living Survival i didn't see that the are discounted at the moment. but still starting at $1100 for the base model and $2300 for the "top of thr line".
pricey stuff. especially considering the building materials and what the competition sells for.

This is for people who can't own a normal kayak for whatever reasons. Good luck finding a cheaper option for a foldable kayak.

$1105 and $1360 on their website right now and I don't need a $400 rack. So...$1360 is still over $600 short of two thousand which you said in your original comment.

Exactly. The argument of "no it's not good because it's plastic" has been debunked a long time ago. Hell, the video of the guys throwing it off a roof and hitting it with a hammer is proof enough that it's fairly sturdy.

It looks like a great kayak, and I can't wait to get one.

Scott 263987 You seriously seem to enjoy the word seriously i mean seriously you seriously used it like seriously 10 times in your comment seriously. And seriously have you seriously ever tried this kayak? It seriously sounds like you haven't, but seriously you have a lot of serious issues. You seriously have no serious idea as to whether or not this is a good kayak seriously. And seriously, of course if you seriously ask another serious manufacturer of serious kayaks they will seriously tell you it's not good because seriously they are trying to sell their product seriously.

Tony Patey there is a reason why you havent seen it when he says it performz like any other kayak i laughed he has no idea at all seriously this kayak is not beach rated lol seriously if you think this is cool a good idea ask yourself why no kayak manufacture thats decent is doing this see how he says this will save you money lol srriously wake up if you think this is cool try a decent kayak in decent water this will not work where other kayak can take ot day in day out you think anyone is using this in alaska ? or anywhere survival is acutally being attempted would you really relie on this to keep you dry and you and your equipment out of the water ?
