I found the new Minn Kota MAX 45 to offer a noticeable advantage in run time over the non-MAX models. Coming from a 34lb thrust motor the difference in power (to cut through weeds) and speed was significant. Even if your only fish small bodies of water I would now recommend the 45lb model and up to anyone outfitting a canoe, small john boat or kayak. Not only can this mode truly power through weeds, but I found the power is enough to overcome even strong winds and keep my craft going in its intended direction. Something that my previous 34lb model could not do and was a safety concern.

2. Run time: Loaded question. Varies day to day....lake to lake. Most of my places are under 100 acres and its not continuously run for more than 15 minutes at a time (just initially to get out to a spot, or come back in). Most places its move 100 ft, anchor for 15 minutes, move again...and so on. The only time any of my batteries have died was the smaller two (Optima and Cabelas) on one lake that I have a 50 straight run going out, and the same coming back. Add to that useage for fishing and they are dead before getting in.....hence the need for two.
3. Anywhere from less that 25% to 90+%. Depends on lake size, conditions (if fighting wind), running the bank or anchoring down, and how long I have (anywhere from 2hours to 10 hours). Every day is different.
4: From near dead I only know it takes over one full day. Not sure on exact time as I don't monitor when it finishes. From say 25% dead, I'd say 3-5 hours (on my smaller batteries....new one I don't have much time with yet to know). Charger is the Battery Tender Plus by Deltran.

I'm looking at possibly making a DIY battery box with a 30AH lithium battery but wasn't sure if that would not provide enough power (Lithium batteries can be discharged up to 80% compared to lead-acid which should not be discharged more than 50%).

I am considering this motor for my Hobie PA14 on a custom mount on the rear carry handle and wonder which battery you use and/or recommend for running this motor.

I am running a Minn Kota Riptide 55# Thrust variable speed transom mount trolling motor on my NuCanoe Frontier 12 Kayak. I just finished a second one that I built for a friend of mine in Oregon. He has been very helpful especially in the electronics area. He gave me some valued input on where to get a Clamp Style DC amp meter. I purchased it on E-Bay and
it cost under $40.00. I have always wondered how much current these trolling motors draw in AMPS and my new DC AMP METER has given me the answers.

I just did some on the water testing with the amp meter referenced above and withmy NuCanoe Frontier 12 doing about 2 mph I am only drawing about 4 amps and at wide open throttle which is about 4 mph is draws about 27 amps. As you can see by these readings you will get A LOT MORE RUN TIME out of your battery running at slower speeds. I was surprised how BIG the difference was between half speed and full speed. Please note that the motor used in this test was the Minn Kota Riptide 55# Thrust VARIABLE SPEED model.
I got similar amp draws from a home made conversion from 5 speed to variable speed on a 40# thrust Minn Kota Motor. If I were ordering a new Minn Kota variable speed trolling motor I would probably go with the Riptide (i.e. Saltwater Version) of the 45# variable speed motor shown in this video. The 45# thrust motor weighs less and costs less so it it s win - win situation. The 5 speed models are REAL AMP HOGS. i.e. short battery life especially at lower speeds as they use resistors to limit the prop rpm which eat up valuable amps stored in your battery.

I originally purchased this motor to mount the transducer on the motor as well. I've also tried two other locations for the transducer, but all get the same interference, even up to six foot away from the motor.
Also the weed guard prop will cut your top speed down a bit.
How fell does your fishfinder work with your current setup ?
Edit: I have a question, how did the extra 6 inch shaft increase affect you ? lets say you are sitting on the seat is the handle too high ? thats really my only concern with buying the 45.
