Perfect trolling motor for small boats, canoes, kayaks - Minn Kota Endura MAX 45

I found the new Minn Kota MAX 45 to offer a noticeable advantage in run time over the non-MAX models. Coming from a 34lb thrust motor the difference in power (to cut through weeds) and speed was significant. Even if your only fish small bodies of water I would now recommend the 45lb model and up to anyone outfitting a canoe, small john boat or kayak. Not only can this mode truly power through weeds, but I found the power is enough to overcome even strong winds and keep my craft going in its intended direction. Something that my previous 34lb model could not do and was a safety concern.

Hey Carl ; great review I don’t know if you got a chance to look over my recent comment concerning your fishfinder and trolling motor ; it may be a bit lengthy but appreciate your response ; also no luck locating 8” deluxe Huddleston weedless ; called Hudd directly they sell only exposed hook style to supply houses ; tackle warehouse , and the factory won’t be building anymore weedless possibly until fall 2019 . Thanks John

Hey Carl ; enjoyed your video on this trolling motor upgrade ; just purchased a Traxxis 45 very similar to yours , as far as the fishfinder your luck with your Lorance elite five HDI , a bit more than I was hoping to spend but any of the units that include side viewing if necessary in shallow water usage ; were down viewing and has only a small angle of view directly under the boat and maybe none at all from what I’ve read in shallow water say 5 feet or less ; some units in the mid price range are ; Hook2 5 series or Helix 5 series all are in that $400 to $500 price range , that will be my next step to get a fishfinder , just curious how valuable it is to you , and what benefits do you see having and using it , to put more fish in your boat , marking and locating structures and return fishing spots , does your unit has side viewing , requiring a triple view transponder and how it performs in shallow water where most of my fishing is 20 feet or less. I saw somebody on the web selling a package unit with the fishfinder mount, battery, in a box and a fixed or magnetic transom mounted transducer , with myself having the sports pal with the square end , it might be a better spot to mount the transponder as well as keeping it as a portable package unit? Thanks again John

I put on a Kipawa propeller on my Endura max 45. It has three blades. I get more speed and more range per charge. And it is 99% weed free. It's a fantastic up grade to my trolling motor.

Hi Carl ; thanks for all your great reviews and I followed your input on the canoe selection picked up by 13 square stern; that fits perfectly in my Tacoma under the bed cover and running a 34lb. now and possibly upgrading to the 45; just curious being new to baitcasting ; if you use braided line mostly with a leader tied on or just go straight to your bait with braided. Good to see your success after all your hard work and time you put into it. thanks again keep up the good work John

Hey John - thanks so much man, I'm glad the reviews were helpful for you. And congratulations on the canoe! I hope you love it like I do, but let me know your thoughts after having used it a while. I had started with that Cabelas 34lb thrust model, but since upgraded to the 45lb and the difference is substantial. If you haven't already, check out my video on the Minn Kota Endura Max 45....should provide you most everything you need to know. In terms of line I use a leader with my braid to most everything. The realist is me says I probably don't have to, but I just like having a clear line at the point of connection for those fish that may be wary. The only place I feel it really plays a role though is in lures that are fished slow that they can nose up to and inspect.....ie; drop shot, shakey head, jigs on hard bottoms, slow crawling anything Texas or Carolina rigged. Anything reaction / constantly in motion you can totally go straight braid to. Although, on reaction lures I still use usually a nice long 6ft+ of leader in order to give a little stretch in my system. Its a small insurance policy of some stretch when you are having a hard time landing one and the hookset isn't great.

The reverse on the 45 is a lot more substantial than it was on the 34lb model I had previously. Still, nothing like full power in the forward direction though.

KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
I would not think so Husin. I only have experience on smaller, freshwater bodies of water. But, I would imagine in open water you would want something more powerful. Minn Kota does make marine rated motors. Check their website.....I know all the marine products are white in color.
Up-a-Creek
Up-a-Creek - 6 years ago
Too bad this guy doesn't know what he's talking about... LOL... Minn Kota's are NOT rated for speed... they are rated for power... a 34lb motor housing will be shorter because it's a smaller motor then the 45lb which is longer because it's a larger motor... the motor ratings are base on the type, size/weight, and use of a watercraft as to what Minn Kota recommends for you to use, but ALL motors are basically configured for aprox. 3mph on the vessel they are meant to be used on... and yes, you may get a bit more speed if you put a larger motor on a smaller boat but that's not how it's meant to work... and a more powerful motor, like the 45lb, will cut through weeds much easier because of the extra power... the older versions with 5 forward and 3 reverse speeds used a lot of electrical power because of the way they were set up... the newer models, like he purchased has an electronic throttle system that doesn't use as much wattage for the same amount of power and therefore lasts longer on a charge... if anyone has ANY QUESTIONS... DON'T LISTEN TO ME, or him... LOL... call Minn Kota direct... that's what they are there for...

KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
Its all about how much run time you want / how hard your going to use it. Unless you have a reason not to, I would suggest the biggest one. I had the 24 size Cabelas AGM, which worked fine on my 45lb thrust. But, since upgraded to the Interstate SRM-29. My run time is substantially longer and I think if using the 55lb model its the one I would choose.
smithmal
smithmal - 6 years ago
Thanks for the great video. Definitely interested in a MK Endura Max as well. Is there a reason why you choose a 45 vs a 55? 55 is about $30 more than a 45, so not that much more increase in cost. My understanding is that they both go the same speeds, but the 55 will provide more consistent speed if the water gets choppier and/or your load increases. Thanks.
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
1. Batteries: I started with the Optima Blue Top D34M AGM battery (when I had my 34lb thrust model). I then added the Cabelas 24 size Advanced Angler AGM (to have 2 batteries for my long days and big waters). Just last month I got an Interstate SRM-29....much larger than the other two. The Cabelas called it quits after 6 years...interestingly the Optima is still chugging along. I don't know the specs on the first two, but this new interstate is 210 AH.
2. Run time: Loaded question. Varies day to day....lake to lake. Most of my places are under 100 acres and its not continuously run for more than 15 minutes at a time (just initially to get out to a spot, or come back in). Most places its move 100 ft, anchor for 15 minutes, move again...and so on. The only time any of my batteries have died was the smaller two (Optima and Cabelas) on one lake that I have a 50 straight run going out, and the same coming back. Add to that useage for fishing and they are dead before getting in.....hence the need for two.
3. Anywhere from less that 25% to 90+%. Depends on lake size, conditions (if fighting wind), running the bank or anchoring down, and how long I have (anywhere from 2hours to 10 hours). Every day is different.
4: From near dead I only know it takes over one full day. Not sure on exact time as I don't monitor when it finishes. From say 25% dead, I'd say 3-5 hours (on my smaller batteries....new one I don't have much time with yet to know). Charger is the Battery Tender Plus by Deltran.

Thanks for the reply. The SP is an awesome fishing canoe. I was trying to source a used one myself but in my price range $700 or less, the takings were slim and/or the canoes were very old. Maybe one day I'll score one. Until then I'll be using a 16' NovaCraft PAL. Didn't hear much about the batteries you use and your run time. Could you answer the following questions:

1. Battery types used (Manufacturer/amp hours)
2. Typical run time and speed that you run your canoe at
3. Typical % loss of charge after a typical days run time
4. Time it takes to recharge your battery (please provide charger info)

I'm looking at possibly making a DIY battery box with a 30AH lithium battery but wasn't sure if that would not provide enough power (Lithium batteries can be discharged up to 80% compared to lead-acid which should not be discharged more than 50%).
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
Hi! No, no particular reason. I think at the time I wanted to balance battery life and output, but these motors are dynamic such that you might use less power having the 55lb at 80% throttle and the 45lb at 100% (assuming those two percentages equal roughly the same power output). Again...I didn't have all my facts. But, at the end of the day and without splitting hairs I think one is just fine. ** On a side not I'm looking to get the Traxxis 80lb (24V) system and put it on my other Sportspal canoe that has the square back stern. THAT should be fun!

What battery are you using to power that
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
I have two. A Cabelas AGM size 24, and a Optima Blue Top D34M. At their peak either one could get me through mixed usage over an 8 hour day. Going forward I would go larger and get either a size 27, or most likely a big size 30.

Minn Kota motors are not speed rated... they are torque to weight rated for the type of boat they will be pulling/pushing and the type of water... in essence, an Endura MAX 45 is made to push a larger boat at the same speed that, say, a Endura MAX 30 would push a canoe... at aprox. 2mph... therefore, the EM 45 on a canoe might get you an extra 1mph has more torque then speed application which is why it cuts through the weeds easier... they are also designed to be more efficient "pulling" a boat from the bow.

KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 6 years ago
Dan Martin Hey Dan - varies of course based on size of battery....as well as charger. I have two right now. A Optima Blue Top Group 34 and a Cabelas AGM....I think Grouo 27. Most of the time, on the smaller bodies of water I usually fish I use 1/2 to 3/4 of the battery if out for the whole day (8+ hours). Using a Battery Tender Pro charger it will take anywhere from 24-48 hours to recharge the battery depending on how low I went. Congrats on the canoe purchase! I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think of it after you've been out a few times.

Hey man....its gonna be a while. Life is taking some twists and turns, so can't make that vid right now. But, its nothing complicated. The hard part (as I recall) was finding spade connectors that accommodated the large gauge wire I ran. Take off the cover of the motor and you'll see exactly what needs to be done. All your doing is taking out the old wire/connectors, and running the new, larger diameter, and longer length wire. Like I said....the termination of the new wiring inside the motor is the only "tricky" part, and its only due to tracking down the larger connectors. You can find them on Amazon all day, but locally you may or may not be able to. Apart from that you do want to run a fuse or circuit breaker (50 amp I believe) along the positive lead very close to where it will connect to the battery. Also, I used these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QI6S68S/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for faster connection. This way you can leave the connection permanently on your battery (before I was using ring connectors and taking them off the battery terminals each time I went out....way too slow.

One word - PWM. This is what's behind the fancy term "Digital Maximizer" of Endura Max :). PWM controller increases speed and torque by 50-80%, costs $40 on Ebay or $100 better quality wireless from Gama Electronics. Outfits like Bassyaks can add PWM remote - wired version - for $300 to any 3/5 speed 'Kota. Mind you, - this is not just PWM but a remote one. Tiller control of 'Kota is so yesterday...

ChaoticDetour
ChaoticDetour - 7 years ago
KeepinItReelFishing overall idea for the Grumman is to make a similar boat to your Sportpal. Line it with closed cell foam sheet to keep noise down. Debating the sponsons. Perhaps something that is clamped on and can easily be removed.
ChaoticDetour
ChaoticDetour - 7 years ago
KeepinItReelFishing thanks for the quick reply. That’s what I was thinking but I am an amateur with canoes. I moved to WI last year from AZ where I had boats with big motors or kayaks. The motor would be offset like yours. I would be making my own mount out of aluminum, as I’m not a fan of paying for inferior product. If I’m able to grab it I was also thinking about running 2 batteries in parallel (34 perhaps) to make it easier to lug each battery around without loosing range.
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 7 years ago
Go for it! There really is no downside apart from battery management. The only possible thing to consider is mounting. Is the Grumman a square stern or would you put it on an offset mount like I have on my Sportspal? Those side/offset mounts are only rated to support trolling motors up to a certain weight effectively. I don't think the 55lb model is much heavier than my 45lb, but I'm pretty sure it has a large/heavier motor assembly. Of course if its a square stern you have nothing to worry about. Power wise I'm all for it though. The 55lb is there when you need it, but of course you don't have to use it when you don't. I'm actually going to be putting their big 85lb/24V Traxxis model on my 16ft canoe next year...should be fun!

I was gifted a minn kota c2 30lb for Christmas for my 16ft kevlar canoe. I am hoping that it will work well with an overall load of about 400-450lbs(boat gear and 2 passengers). AMP DRAW IS A BIG DEAL ON TROLLING MOTORS.

I am running a Minn Kota Riptide 55# Thrust variable speed transom mount trolling motor on my NuCanoe Frontier 12 Kayak. I just finished a second one that I built for a friend of mine in Oregon. He has been very helpful especially in the electronics area. He gave me some valued input on where to get a Clamp Style DC amp meter. I purchased it on E-Bay and
it cost under $40.00. I have always wondered how much current these trolling motors draw in AMPS and my new DC AMP METER has given me the answers.

Here is the link.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/252179114174?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I just did some on the water testing  with the amp meter referenced above and withmy NuCanoe Frontier 12 doing about 2 mph I am only drawing about 4 amps and at wide open throttle which is about 4 mph is draws about 27 amps. As you can see by these readings you will get A LOT MORE RUN TIME out of your battery running at slower speeds. I was surprised how BIG the difference was between half speed and full speed.  Please note that the motor used  in this test was the Minn Kota Riptide 55# Thrust VARIABLE SPEED model.

I got similar amp draws from a home made conversion from 5 speed to variable speed on a 40# thrust Minn Kota Motor. If I were ordering a new Minn Kota variable speed trolling motor I would probably go with the Riptide (i.e. Saltwater Version) of the 45# variable speed motor shown in this video. The 45# thrust motor weighs less and costs less so it it s win - win situation. The 5 speed models are REAL AMP HOGS. i.e. short battery life especially at lower speeds as they use resistors to limit the prop rpm which eat up valuable amps stored in your battery.

helicopterjohns you mentioned a homemade fixed 5-speed output to variable conversion in your comment. I'm very disappointed with my 5-speed Endura C2 40 as a trolling motor for 'my boat'. Particularly the performance range between 4 and 5. 1-4 setting are small increments, 4-5 bumps so hard I can tow a kid on a tube. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, at this point I don't give a crap about the warranty. If 4 - 5 would have followed the output sequence of 1-4 it would have been perfect for my tin boat.

question about mounting your transducer to the bottom of the trolling motor. When I bought my fish finder it said in the manual to not mount it like that because of false readings or inaccurate reads etc. Are you noticing anything along those lines or is mounting it there a pretty standard practice.

Greg Hicks it's not that bad until you kick up a lot of turbulence at a much higher speed than 3.9

Ironbound84 - 7 years ago
KeepinItReelFishing actually I put a 212$ deposit on a custom XH 8'6" with a alps reel seat. Total cost is gonna be over 400$. Just prayin to god I like it lol...I just wanted a one rod set up for my 8" hudds and my wake bait / top water & glide baits. Most of my lures are 3-6 oz. I told Ben what I fish and what I was looking for.. he told me what he recommend so I said screw it and went for it. It's a lot of $ so I'm a little nervous. But I've heard nothing but great things About there rods. Thx man keep up the great videos .. good luck on the water

Hey Iron - I know the new White Label rods are popular and I don't see any real review vids of them here on Youtube. I'll put it on the list of things to review. But if your on the fence don't wait for me....its a great rod and myself as well as many others would totally recommend it. Just bear in mind its a slow action rod....very parabolic / lots of flex.

The standard in sailboats and I imagine all boats is; large wake = poor effecency (speed). Have you tried moving forward? I see you have your battery located forward so I'm sure you thought about it. The reason I'm asking this is I just bought a sportspal 14 after reading your reviews on it and I will buy a Max 45 for the same reasons. It appears you are very therow and I don't want to miss any fishing time trying to reinvent the wheel. I do a lot of that. Well I am going to go out and see if the ice has melted on the lake so I can try out my new boat.

I hope you enjoy both the canoe and the motor 'wahoo'. I definitely tried to be thorough and I truly feel this is a better alternative in most respects to the multitude of kayaks that are popular now days.

I get what you're saying. I live in Central VA and I had caught around 300 bass before I caught anything over 4 pounds. Two weeks ago, I broke that 4 pound barrier. She was a 9 pounder. The appreciation is built so much when you think about how rare those fish are in your area. I got the release on film but not the catch.
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 7 years ago
Yeah....I know, I know man. But, truth be told I don't want a big fish from there. I want to get a 7+ here in the Northeast. Its not about the outright weight of the fish, its the rarity in a given location. A 7lb here is somewhat the equivalent of a 13lb in Cali (at least in terms of a % of state record....10lb 14oz for NJ vs 22lb for Cali)

Love the power of my new Max 55 over the old 30lb thrust I had. But the pulse circuits the Max uses absolutely hammers my Garmin down view fish finder, unless the trolling motor is off or at max speed.

I originally purchased this motor to mount the transducer on the motor as well. I've also tried two other locations for the transducer, but all get the same interference, even up to six foot away from the motor.

Also the weed guard prop will cut your top speed down a bit.
DirtyBassFishing
DirtyBassFishing - 7 years ago
I was wondering, what do you mean by feedback ? did you mean sonar interference ? Also i was confused by "connecting the negatives of each battery common to each other" ?

How fell does your fishfinder work with your current setup ?
KeepinItReelFishing
KeepinItReelFishing - 7 years ago
Interesting on the weed prop and speed. I hadn't considered that, but its fine for me. Its slow either way :P and I'm much more interested in getting through cover with more ease. Regarding the feedback, you run your Garmin off the same battery as the motor? Just an FYI I run my sonar from a separate battery and still get feedback. I was advised by Lowrance to connect the negatives of each battery common to each other and that helped.

KeepinItReelFishing thanks Carl ; for all the good info I really been enjoying all your reviews ; I followed your lead kind of on most things so far bought the sportspal 13 sq. transom, tucks up tight under bed cover of Tacoma ; I have a 34 lb. thrust and possibly will upgrade to the 45; just curious being new to baitcasting , mostly spinning in the past do you use braided with leaders or just go straight braided to your baits. thanks John
