Just starting as a spin rod fisherman. Have flyfished over 20 yrs. Your incites to fishing with lures and bait plus line and leader combinations would be helpful in one of your videos. I am from Beaufort NC and fish selection is red & black drum speckled trout and sheephead. keep a tightline.

Zoffinger, I've been watching your vids for awhile and I'm a subscriber. But launching a kayak vs. a jonboat is not easier. I simply back my boat into the water and release. Then drive my boat back on the trailer. Every video you post, you drag your yak up a hill and to your car and manually place your cayak in the bed of your truck. This is way too much work, you're killing your self.

Hi Zoffinger, great videos and awesome hacks for kayak improvements. I'm thinking about getting into kayaking, but, do wonder if being in a fixed in position for long times in a kayak is hard on lower back, and or other parts of the body. Do your legs go numb; does it ever get tiring to sit in same position? Do you get the feeling of being in an airline seat with limited moving ability? Thanks.

Yo Southern, Kayakakakaer. Liked your Voodo... But I have one question, the handtruck wheels. Was the hole in the top of your Kayaki or did you drill em. Also where did you put the pvc pipe frame under your kayak, again did you drill water proof holes?? Thanks for your reply. Build a snowman.

I have been thinking of a mod for my fishing kayak. I made the scupper hole PVC "cart" for my SoT yak. I am thinking of adding removable small skegs (fins to improve tracking) that i can attach to the two poles that go through the scupper holes down into the water when the cart is "wheels up" on the boat on the water. What do you think of that idea?

What is the weight capacity of your kayak and how much do all the additions weigh? Again for a newbie like me this is a very informative video and makes me think I don't have to buy the most an expensive kayak. Thanks!

Awesome boat sir. I'm new to this and you gave me a lot of helpful ideas. I'd had to put holes in my kayak that I "thought" would be a good idea. Slow process. Just an idea I had though: the block that you use to prop up the front of your boat when putting the wheels on....we'll cover it with linex truck bed liner. It will make it durable yet still be lightweight and keep it from chipping apart. Thanks for the vid!
zoffinger

Marian Chadwick
Marian Chadwick - 9 years ago
I shamelessly copied your every move and was able to make your live bait well.  I need to know what u made the black tray it sits on out of as that is my next step.  I found a truck bed liner by the side of the road and am blessed with a husband willing to face the weather and saw it up enough to get it home. He has the seat tray cut out for me.
I need a web sight that will sell me just enough foam to make the fish pontoons out of.  What size circle is it, how long is each fish, and what do they call this kind of foam?  I need to get enough foam to mold the seat, make the stand up board molds and the "V" foam to rest the yak on when messing with the trolley.  It is not like we have access to job sight scraps and are not willing to buy large scale orders.  We live near Joplin, MO in a town called Carthage and have been told no in the stores we asked at.

dude, I am currently looking for a kayak, you have made excellent use of space, my question is, with me being 6'8", and 275lbs, is this going to be a problem, as you have got a lot of stuff on yours, and its top heavy, is it a problem for you to maneuver the yak around, with out tipping????????

Excellent, and Frugal, add ons my man. As a bargain basement shopper myself, I really like your creative usage of "stuff".
As an older fellow I believe the only thing I'd like to see would be a small outrigger/flotation system. your boat seems a bit top heavy,as you mentioned. outriggers can be fixed, collapsible or hinged. Fixed might interfere with landing fish. they wouldn't have to be full length (just a couple of feet long in the bow, where the height is).  Another option- since you are rapidly approaching the "Law of Diminishing Returns"- is to start the search ,and budget, for a used 10' boat. Who knows, maybe you'll start "New Timer Canoes"..............good luck...............JRW

Love the vid. People love to post the thousands they invest in their kayaks but this is down to earth for those that don't have bottomless pockets.

Love the vids most of people who buy a $500 kayak and put $1500 in mods in it! lol

Give that rudder some slack and tie a couple cords to it so you can slip it left or right. Hand control or foot, you'd love it even more.

WTF? I CANT BELIEVE THIS VIDEO! Dude your video SUCKS and your kayak too !!!! Obviously you DID NOT! spend much time on it or anything related to fishing and laws! Why dont you please go and do something constructive pal, like......like ... maybe? BUILD ME ONE ? Hmmmm.......he he he - LOL...ROTFL !!! WAIT, WAIT, dont punch me yet ! Truce - Mr. Zoffinger. WAIT LISTEN... I am just willing to bet if you were to make some basic drawings of your kayak, the type and measurements of the components, you could sell your plans and make some fun money. I would buy a copy of them, Seriously!!! - I'd pay you 30 bucks for a copy in advance. Oh and about some of the above I typed, well forget it obviously I didnt mean it. It was in gest and out of fun, and I just wanted to mess with ya. Very impressed with your work, First thing that came to my mind when I saw your video was your meticulous informative work and you are definatley giving back. You are just like a very good friend I use to have that is no longer here on earth. He was a smart photographer/outdoorsman , definately a Go Getter like yourself. He was from Cocoa beach on the Space coast (RIP Jim Conlon 1965-1997) . Zoffinger - you are a true inspiration and lets just agree, your awesome! Not many people take the time anymore to help other people in life. Truely I speak with no fork tongue. Oh yeah, and one more thing,  you should patend the name "KON - TIKI" and on that note sir, Thanks a million my friend!

This boat strikes me as not so much a poor man's kayak but rather a creative and minimalist man's kayak.  Impressive.  You seem to have the meticulousness of an engineer.  Have watched several of your videos and have no doubt that I'd enjoy a day on the water with you.  Am a seasoned fly-fishing kayaker myself, and may incorporate some of your ideas - especially the wheels, as it seems gravity is getting stronger these days.  If I could make one suggestion, it is to remind your viewers to avoid touching any released fish, as handling tends to remove slime and invite disease.

Great job and all but that things gotta weigh a ton! Hoisting it on the top of your car, whoa! I've found that successful yak fishing is all about packing light and you've just got way way too much stuff there. Be careful, you flip that thing and it may sink like a stone. Good vid though, gotta give ya credit on cutting corners! Be well and fish on!

Hey man great vid. Question though... how tall are you and how much do you weigh? Reason I ask is i'm 5'10 and 200lbs and everyone i ask tells me to fish gulf waters i need a 12-14ft kayak. I'm not ready to fork that kind of cash over if i don't need to
zoffinger
zoffinger - 10 years ago
Good question; I'm 5'5" 140lbs. The Emotion Spitfire 8 has a capacity of 240 lbs (without pontoons like I have now) and the Emotion Spitfire 9 has a capacity of 350lbs. That's plenty of buoyancy for regular folks. The main drawback with a short , flat bottomed kayak like mine is tracking and cutting through waves. I usually paddle in calm, protected waters and don't have to deal with the surf and big waves and since I added the skeg in the back, it tracks like a 14 footer! Good thing is, the small kayaks are really cheap compared to the big ones and if you come to realize that you need a bigger kayak, you can always sell it and upgrade. I think folks sometimes wait WAY to long, pining away for the perfect kayak when they could be on the water now, having a blast with a smaller, cheaper kayak.

Nice video. Those plastic tool boxes have a tendency to snap and break right at the hinges, especially when out in direct UV light for prolonged periods of time. Is your rear DIY plastic rudder just straight like a daggerboard/centerboard or does it also turn left to right and act as a rudder with tiller? Although neat use of space with your mods, most kayaks are weight limited. How well does your mods work with your own weight in the boat?  Nicely done video.

Thank's Marty,  Funny thing is I'm in the process of designing a new kayak and your work here has set my innovation clock spinning.......I just finished checking out the updates.  Good stuff as usual.  The last boat I built had a dual set of outrigger floats/ paddling/sailing.  Much more complex than yours but they worked just fine.  I'm going to try to build in some of the features you added on the new boat and check out the bed liner material too.  I love having a place for the paddle secure across the coaming of the cockpit. Stuff has to stay IN the boat. I just subscribed, so keep the good stuff coming!!
David Eblen
David Eblen - 10 years ago
I've been designing and building kayaks for years and I gotta' say this is the most innovative piece of work I've seen in many moons. If you don't have a degree in engineering, don't bother, there's not much they can teach you!!  Haven't read through all the comments so excuse me if someone else has mentioned this but you really need to do something about the "bitter" end on the anchor line.  You will eventually lose it overboard the way you are doing it now.  If it were me, I'd take the bitter end and put a loop in it, pre string it through the steel ring and hook the loop over the cleat.  When you anchor just feed the line out and then secure it the manner you are now.  This way there is no chance of it disappearing overboard leaving you with no anchor.  The only other thing I see is that fish box.  Boy is it clever but the center of gravity is so high I'd make it a priority to figure out a way to lower it somehow.  Sometimes 1/2 and inch of vertical CG displacement in a kayak is critical.  Couldn't hurt......
zoffinger
zoffinger - 10 years ago
Thank you, David. Of the thousands of comments I've gotten on my channel, this one is special; for a kayak designer to give me kudos. Your input has been preceded by many other bits of helpful hints. And I have listened. I recently posted a rigging update (my second update video) and it shows the pontoons I added to compensate for the high center of gravity. I can throw a cast net from this baby now! :^) Thanks again for the comment - Marty

I have to say your video was so nicely put together. The first instant I saw your boat in the first part of the video I was thinking, this guy has too much stuff on his kayak! But after just a few moments of you talking and explaining everything I was impressed. I was especially impressed by your adapting and scrounging trash items to make most of the stuff you have. On a budget but so well thought out. On the cheap but well designed. I think your kayak is so inspirational I am thinking about what I can do to my kayak.
It is easy to go buy a hobie fishing kayak ( not cheap, but easy) You have done amazing things for a fraction of the cost.
I bought my tandem kayak for 100 at a used marine parts store here in key largo, fl. It is a sit in kayak. I have 2 kids under 3 that go with me sometimes. It already has two seats that are mounted on rails inside the boat but I find them wet and not as comfy as I need. So my quest is to find a better seat, possibly one that allows air under my rear so I do not get so soggy if you know what I mean. So if you or anyone reading this comment can suggest anything please feel free.
In conclusion, I appreciate the fact that you say you are giving back, what a nice gesture and you expelling so anyone can understand.
Good fishing! Jonathan
zoffinger

Thanks, Jonathan. It really does work REALLY well. Though it looks like the USS Enterprise with those pontoons, I've always been more of a Star Wars guy and compare it to the Millenium Falcon. Like Han Solo said, "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts"  Haha.
I made a video showing my kayak seat modification. I wanted to keep my backside dryer too.

I am truly amazed at your ingenuity. I would greatly appreciate a step by step rundown on the making of your movable skegg. Please contact me at my email address. I am storing my 14ft. Malibu xfactor on a wall rack (bottom of boat facing out) Will skegg be a problem

What kind of pants are you wearing in this video? I need to keep Walter as dry as possible so he doesn't have another infection and these pants seem water resistant. Thanks, Marty.

Thanks, Marty. I have some nice camo waders from back when I used to go gold panning in Colorado. Nothing is quite as much of a fashion statement as an old woman in camo waders. Looks especially good with my purple tie dye shirt. Lol

I got my water resistant pair of pants at Sports Authority I think. Waders are probably your best bet though. Too pricey for me, though.

I like that anchor trolley.  Wouldn't it be wise to add a knot to the end of the anchor line so it can't slide all the way through that ring?  Say if the anchor slides into some deeper water before you can tie it onto the cleat.  The line would run through the ring until it hit that knot.

Awesome video! I'm working on one myself right now. How is the 10-pound flat weight anchor working for you? Does it work well to keep you anchored?

You are genius. I love to build and invent...repurposed stuff...and could probably have designed this, given about five years. Lol. You've saved me a boatload of time. Need to outfit a kayak for my hubby in kind of a hurry...racing cancer and want him to get out and enjoy fishing as much as possible. Looks like you're near us in Florida. We fish the Indian River Lagoon in the Melbourne area. Thanks again SOOO much for sharing what I know took you months, if not years, to accomplish.
