Poor Man's Kayak Modifications

Cheap Menards kayak fishing modifications. This video was put together as a inexpensive way to get your sit in kayak water ready for fishing. I show you how to install heavy duty handles, an inexpensive anchor trolley system, flush mount rod holders and rod leashes. Keep in mind this is a sit in kayak, the open cockpit will allow water to get in. That being said, I do not use silicone on my drilled holes. What I do is use a rubber washer that fits the stainless steel screw nice and snug and then a stainless washer slightly over sized to the rubber washer to create a water tight seal. You will get more water through the cockpit opening then any hole on this kayak if any at all. These are inexpensive modifications to get on the water. At any time you can take these ideas and upgrade to better quality material and maybe even build on these ideas and make them better, it’s your yak. Keep in mind that any cuts and or holes you make a very hard to repair so measure tice cut once. Some of these mods are necessary and some may not be for your style of fishing. I would highly recommend backing plates on ALL of those nuts and bolts. That's pretty thin plastic

Love the modifications I wouldn't worry too much about the silicone because that kayak is just a death trap don't like them they flip too easy
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 6 years ago
Mark Gutierrez I’ve been using it for 5 years I can even stand in it and fish this one is very wide and very stable. Some of the other cheaper yaks are not and I agree with that on some of them.

Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 6 years ago
Jason Kloos were you able to get the washer on the inside? Or was it on the outside? That’s a good idea I’ll have to keep that in mind.
Jason Kloos
Jason Kloos - 6 years ago
I used rubber washers with rivets as well on a sit-on.
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 6 years ago
Jason Kloos you are correct but the rubber washers I used seals the holes, no leaks in five years. If it was a sit on top I would use rivets. Thanks for the input.

Dicky Fisher that’s awesome I agree it doesn’t have to be expensive to set it up to fish. We’ve been running these yaks for five years and we’ve only had to replace the para cord. No leaks no problems.

Why add 2 trolley systems o on same side of yak? Deck eye in middle should of been more vertical amd just run cord thru it to bow and stern. Also, definitely should of used silocone to seal screw holes.
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 6 years ago
MrHookSet not sure I understand the obsession with silicone we’ve been running these yaks for 5 years not a single leak I use rubber washers on the inside, same as some of the manufactures. And I tried the single trolley system and the para cord always flipped up and over the cockpit, this was the best fix. That happens because of the shape of this yak. Now if this was a sit on top with no access to the inside I would’ve used silicone for sure, thanks for watching.

Drop a little silicone in there when attaching. Stuff lasts forever. It is even dishwasher proof.
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 7 years ago
911 Tech I hear you, the one thing I’ve seen with silicone is it likes to separate at the seal sometimes do to the elements hot and cold and sun. This doesn’t happen all the time but I’ve seen it on yaks because most of the time they either sit in a garage or outside causing extra wear and tear. Thanks for watching and the advice. I think yak attack makes a video wear they use rubber washers as well on a anchor trolley system but I could be wrong.
911 Tech
911 Tech - 7 years ago
That's fine but most rubber washers will eventually dry rot. Probably not over the life of a yak but if the washer is not top notch I immagine it is possible. I have seen it happen in sheet metal screws with rubber washers. I had a coffee mug that I accidentally dropped a bead of silicone on and that bead stayed there for about a decade before the the mug was broken accidentally. I assume it is still there in some landfill, lol.
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 7 years ago
911 Tech don’t need it those rubber washers I used work just as good. I’ve been using it for about 4 years now not a single leak through any hole I drilled.

Love the video. I am in the process of doing the same to my kayak. I want to put an anchor cleat in a similar position as shown in this video. However my kayak does not allow me to have access to the under side of the kayak, meaning I cannot place a washer and a nut on the backside to ensure the cleat stays on. Any suggestions on where or how I could attach my anchor cleat?
Fishing POV
Fishing POV - 7 years ago
That's a tough one without seeing the yak. But some guys use rivets but I'm not sure if they would fit down the cleat screw holes. there are also different styles of cleats out there as well. What ever you use, if you have a sit on top kayak be sure to use a sealant of some sort to insure no water gets in.

i added a short piece of bungee on the pad eyes front and back, with stainless pulleys from home depot (cheap and awesome) rather than run anchor chord thru the pad eyes. it acts as a shock absorber for choppy conditions and puts less stress on the pad eyes. also, i use stainless steel pad eyes from Austin kayak and canoe ( they also have pulleys and tons of great accessories) because i've snapped several nylon ones. do it right, do it once!

The side holes, yeah, probably best to use some kind of sealant.

The ones on top, the only time it would matter is if drilling in to a location that has no access hatch. You also won't get much water, if any, in a regular flatwater lake type situation anyway.

Meant for?? Why would they put a skirt on it then for cooking food or losing weight when on the water? No man so you CAN go through rough terrain or rapids. It surely isn't one you can roll if you tip it, but the skirt is there to keep water out!! This allows you to go where no goon will go. Goonies.

+Bass Hole Cool... I have a SOT fishing kayak... and my mate just bought a sit-in much like the one in your video.

If you check out my YT channel, you should find videos of me and my rig... Sometimes I put a 34 lb trolling motor on the back with a couple of pontoons to support the extra weight of the motor and battery.

I'm looking forward to getting to post videos from a few more locations around Sth Oz this coming summer... West Lakes is nice, but there are so many potential fishing spots in Sth Oz... Not sure whether to go round the coast, or up the Murray! ;)

Tight lines!

Michael Cox
Michael Cox - 7 years ago
That IS NOT a trolley system by any form of the definition. A trolley system is one continuous section of rope to move the anchor the full length of the boat and pulleys should be on each end. I'm not surprised though, since they opted for phone cord when three rod leashes can be had for $10.

Heat shrink wire wrapping is pretty cheap, and will last longer than electrical tape. Also, those deck eyes don't hold up to paraccord friction. A few cheap pulleys will extend the life of the whole system.

... ps.. is the anchor trolley for an actual "anchor"? I bought a small 8 pound collapsible anchor and thought about using just a double screw eyelet like you used.
... pss.. got it for $169 after the 11% rebate.

Instead of electrical tape on the rod leashes I would say slip a half inch diameter heat shrink tube over the cord, make a loop and sew it together with braided fishing line then pull the heat shrink tube over the sewed part of the loop and use a heat gun or a lighter.
It will look a lot neater and be a lot less likely to come undone.

I wish I were brave enough to start drilling and sawing into my kayak so I could do some cool mods. Great video!

I did have to replace some eyelets on my kayak. I used marine sealant from our local Ace Hardware on the eyelets on the inside of my yak. Yeah, it's a sit-in and invasive water in the cockpit is unavoidable, but, I felt better inside by covering the bolts w/ marine sealant. Guess I'm OCD like that! LOL

Love what you did with this kayak. however on your anchor trolley I would have opted for the loop at each end of the para-cord line and a mini carabiner that you can get at walmart for under a buck. oh and most para-cord they make these days has a nylon weave if you put a little heat to it it will melt together nicely thus eliminating your need for the electrical tape.
Andy Sjostrom
Andy Sjostrom - 8 years ago
ok if I ad a side car which costs around 5 grand for a decent one I may as well just go buy a trike with a trailer hitch and if I do that I may as well just put my freedom up for sale and become just another autonomous robot in a cage. the other way to get around the problem would be to move closer to the water. of course if I did that I'd have to give up the place I'm in now which would mean losing the mote...lol
Andy Sjostrom
Andy Sjostrom - 8 years ago
yea I've been thinking of buying a kayak or another canoe. however since I drive a motorcycle getting a kayak or canoe to the water would be a little tricky..lol
Andy Sjostrom
Andy Sjostrom - 8 years ago
ok yea it would be if you already had the ring and the para-cord I used to run a similar set up on a canoe I had. the only differance with my set up was I ran one line from the bow to the stren tied two lines to the carabiener one for the anchor and the other to one corner of my seat and I'd sit in the middle of a 16' canoe. I do like your set up better having one line in the water and only one line running stern to bow.

Just a question - is there any need to use a sealant on the eyelets? Did the yak ship water through the holes or did it stay water-tight? If you used sealant on a poly yak, what would stick to the plastic?

Instead of using electrical tape on the anchor trolley knot ends... snip the paracord back so there is about a 1/4 inch of tag end left.  Use a lighter to melt the tag end back and while it's molten use the rounded shaft of a screwdriver or something similar to drive the molten paracord into the last knot.  Very secure way to lock in that last knot by because the end melts and becomes one with the knot.
