Power kite kayak sailing fast in Goa

Third prototype of my invention since I had the idea for this heeling free kite boat rig 2 1/2 years ago. Have been working on this and financing it all alone so far, but hoping to find some investor/partner, water sports company or private individual, to get through the remaining patent procedure(Patent Pending(WO2011095178 (A1)) and bring this thing to market. Any serious proposals welcome! For kayaks and dinghys it's virtually market ready. Once satisfactory starting and landing systems for bigger kites are developed I am convinced this will be the system of choice for yachts as well, without the need for ballast keel, dagger board or compromises on the hull shape and folding away on it's own when sailing downwind or not in use. Please support my project by spreading this clip!

is it not dangerous with this thing on the front?

Yeah, sharks are pretty dangerous, waves are dangerous, this kite is dangerous, someone could drown...

I first viewed your kite scooter. good stuff here. one really stupit query. is there a rudder involved here or is the kite your directional control?
Ingo Voegler
Ingo Voegler - 10 years ago
no rudder involved, course can be changed either through the kite or by changing the position of the lever arm (and with it the angle of attack)

very nice, you can buy and how much it might cost? On what means does it work? I live in Italy in Bergamo. ri2125@gmail.com

I think the market will always be small for this type of kiting, Kitesurfing is so popular and so very portable too. You will get some who want to use a kayak and kite, which is nothing new, its the upwind performance that is crucial..after all who wants to just cruise downwind all the time? You see this on many Kayak Kite clips on this site, which is fine if that's what some people want to do. I would rather have a system that can get me upwind though. Good idea and keep developing:)

I have thought about that, but for relatively smaller kites (3sqm should easily be enough to get a kayak close to hull speed in 10knts of wind). The rig itself would then be economical and easy to build, I wion't do that myself however, but try to find a company that already sells kayaks and accessories. To go fast the hull of a kayak is actually a mismatch, a surfboard shaped hull is better, as in my latest prototype "kite-scooter"

that a cool idea boat those big kits are expensive. and this will add to the cost. very limted market. you should just start sailing these things on line ingo dont waist your money on a patent. any patent u get will not keep big compamys from making this of they want but they will not bother because. the market is to small.

So would you sell kits to convert existing Kayaks? its a very good idea, the KiteCat was too expensive for what it was..if you can keep the price low I reckon you will be a rich man:)

Operation is definitely easier than that of most other sailcraft and also physically less demanding. Speed potential is enormous, but not yet unlocked Biggest downsides of this kayak were certainly the complicated starting procedure and that it's hull shape wasn't made for high speed and thus quite ineffective/draggy. I have meanwhile solved both problems with a beach launchable prototype and just now uploaded a video of it: "Kite scooter -- a fast and versatile novel small kite sailing boat"

It's fantastic. How does it compare to a sailboat or a kayak in terms of ease of use and speed and maneuverability? Is it physically more or less taxing than say.... sailing a small craft upwind. Or paddling upwind? I'd love to know.

It definitely would work on your canoe and I would really love to come over, alongwith kite and rig and join you on your trip, but the distance from here is a little bit too big, seems to be close to 10000 miles

I have always dreamed of having such a rig on my 2 person, 18' canoes. This is a great invention. Think it would work on the big canoes? I'll bet you could really cover some distance. Want to join us on a 10 day wilderness trip on the Churchill River? Start June 17.

I've not read through all the comments, but has anyone suggested Kickstarter as a way to get some backing? I love it and wish I could get one myself!

Great work, beautiful stuff there, I'm really impressed! I would think that the line wear you mentioned would be worse as time go by or as forces increase. (heavier riders, gear, stronger winds.) As you know those flying lines are really not suppose to take any friction..! I understand the complexity but I'd say a double-pulley might be best, but longer 4mm bar lines might just do the trick. I reckon you'd have to run them separately to avoid line-on-line friction anyway. Good luck with it!

With smaller kites this system should work on any kayak, as long as you could find strong enough points for mounting the rig at the bow. For a big kite like the one I used in this video definitely a 2-seater kayak would be better. System isn't yet available on the market and I haven't even tried to find a company to launch it.I am still trying to develop it further.

I'm really impressed with this device. I have two kayaks and do kitesurfing as well, and was thinking about something like this. I like the possibility that it could be used for more than one person; maybe to give trips to other people. "Kayak-iting trips for a very low price..." on a beach.

"I can't see the point in people playing tennis", said the boxer . . . I am sometimes having fun kiteboarding and sometimes I am having fun driving kite boat prototypes(often both in one session). Both are coincidentally using the same means of propulsion. I cant't, to be honest, see the point in your comment, would you be happier, if anyone in the world would do just kiteboarding?
rudysf
rudysf - 11 years ago
Mechanically interesting construction but somehow I fail to see the point? Would be a great option for paraplegic kiteboarders, but otherwise it seems to be much more limiting than kiteboarding.

Redirecting the lines through the ring puts the kite force attachment point effectively at the end of the lever arm, it then levels out in line with the lateral resistance force generated by the front foil. This leaves boat and rig absolutely free of heel regardless of kite position. I had tried pulleys to redirect the lines as well, but that seemed much unsafer. Using the ring has so far worked very well and only a little and seemingly non-threatening line wear is visible after about 30 hours

Why do you actually get the lines thru that lil ring on the bow? Its kind of a curious mounting but seems to be working fairly well ! Just that from a safety point of view, it might not be the optimal solution.

I highly recommend carbn fiber over okoume plywood. Build out the foils roughly in plywood laminates, sand the foil to shape, cover in carbon and epoxy, sand some more, coat it and go. Steel is monsterously heavy.

Upwind performance is quite impressive, given that this is a low-budget and largely home-made prototype; pointing about 60deg off the true wind at close to hull speed(~4knts) in a gentle to moderate breeze. Max speed I reached during filming this video was about 10knts (beam reaching), much more should be possible on flatter water or with longer and slimmer foils(needed other material than stainless steel, e.g. carbon fiber).

Great concept! Hows the upwind performance in your sit on kayak? I'm hoping i t beats slogging into a head wind in a sea kayak;-)

The flysurfer kite I can start from the water, if wind is above 10knts, but the boat has to be moored on a buoy or prevented from too much drifting by the help of a driftanker (the orange thing behind me in the video). Starting from the beach is easier though, and I prefer to do it that way; it works in less wind also.
