Yes, that was the reasoning for trying to use the tensioner /derailer system. The problem is that the set up was using too short of a chain and it was jumping off and not meshing properly. Later I found one gear ratio that worked well and abandoned the whole derailer idea.

I didn't refit or change the derailer. Everything is just inverted but I am still pedaling in the same direction. The reason the chain jumps off is due to the fact the chain is much shorter than usual and the drive sprocket is smaller. This requires more spring tension to be supplied than the derailer is capable of. I got it to work better with additional springs but eventually scrapped the derailer and went with a Snap-Idle HMW tensioner. Works flawlessly now.

the problem with the chain tension is because you have fitted the derailer (chain tensioner ) on the wrong side of the drive i would guess it works very well going backward !
