OK I need a volunteer to dump it, and a volunteer to do the rescue. Seriously, it is a good idea to try these before hand, especially if you're a crappy roller like me. Yes, so crappy I had to get a sit on craft.

The best tip is to stay near the shore so worst case you can swim to safety! Too many inexperienced folks get into trouble by being further off shore than they realize We just had 2 fatalities where folks got caught in bad weather and could not make it in (no vhf in life vest or other safety items and no wet suits and no checking tides, wind and current info readily available on smartphone). Too many people think kayaks and canoes are play toys.

That's why it's not a good idea to get into open water with a sit inside, I have a sit on top and I'm 200 pounds and it's not problem getting back in

+Daniel Engle You may want to do some research, possibly take a PC or ACA course or two then reconsider your stance on sit inside kayaks. a wide short kayak (like most sit on tops) have a lot of initial stability in calm water. They are not designed to track well in wind and any appreciable current/tide. I properly designed sea kayak is designed so that the paddler creates stability. In rough seas the paddler can edge and indeed even outright lean into the wave as they have great secondary stability. Recreational boats and indeed most sit on tops are designed with loads of initial stability in calm water. A wider kayak like this isn't really designed to be edged (that's why most of them come with a rudder option). Saying this, they will take the angle of the wave (because you the paddler cannot easily edge or lean the hull off the water into the wave).

If you've taken a few courses and can roll, then the sit in is an even better option. You will exert 10 times the energy getting back into your high volume sit on top as I will rolling my 17' P&H Scorpio.

Completely agree. I was going to comment that this is a worthless video. Having a buddy with you is all well and good, but the real survival tips that need to be taught are for when you're out there on your own.

I take my Necky Zoar to the beach each year and practice several methods of re-entry. I found after rolling the boat upright, I have to bail the kayak with my bailing bucket before re-entry. If I try any method before bailing, the hull will roll again easily. Once bailed, success rate goes way up. I suspect each hull design will be a bit different and best to practice this before going into larger bodies of water.

His girlfriend clearly LOVES the bilge pump. Best valentines day gift she's ever had i'd say, going by the joyous expression on her face. I wonder if she rows out into the middle of the great lakes and deliberately sinks her own boat just so she can get her hands on that pump. All hail the bilge.

Great video, Old Town. I will put this on my Kayak the Bay Facebook page for my paddlers who rent from me. Kayaking around the islands in Lake Erie is beautiful but can be tricky. I advise my kayakers to use the sit-on-tops if they are very inexperienced. It's easier to get in and normally (if the plug isn't taken out) will always be your flotation device. Also, I put a cut out plastic gallon milk container behind the seat-it always floats.

I have a question at 2:00. she is pumping out the water in the kayak. when the kayak flip over, dont you loose many of the things on board that don't float? does that pump float?
