Don't do this guys. Straps will scratching spots between doors and roof. Few trips you will see 4 spots nasty tiny scratches like sandpaper . It is not worth ...can be expensive if rentals guys find out.

+John Skinner Fishing What i can said more so. Aerodynamics are brutal and straps will works left and right on small areas. It's not stable solid construction mounted on edges of the roof. Enjoy your vacations next time and waiting for Floridian fish from that trip.

Great info. I take a trip down to Florida usually once a year and have had problems in the past with being able to tow kayaks around. Good to know there are easier solutions.

I used a homemade setup like this for years and never had a problem on my sedan. I used a pool noodle cut in half lengthwise lol. Last year I got temporary roof racks that work better, but this is a nice cheap solution and it works.

Pro tip:
Twist the straps so they don't make any noise when you're driving. When you keep them flat like that they will flap in the wind and that will annoy the hell out of you on a long trip.

John- you mention leaving the foam blocks and straps on all week. When I leave mine on, if it happens to rain, the straps break the seal at the door frame and my car gets water inside. No issues with that? I have the inflatable Milone setup. But the straps through the doors are similar.

Where did you keep the kyack at night? I imagine it wouldn't be there in the morning if it was tied to the roof.

I didn't worry about it as I was staying in a fairly secure place, but you could crack the windows slightly and run a cable around the support between the front and rear doors and run it through a scupper hole on the yak. I seem to remember doing that one night when I was tarpon fishing and the car was some distance away on the overseas highway.
