Why are people so stupid in the comments? A species common name means nothing. Just because one species of crocodile is called a Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), it doesn't mean that others like the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), doesn't also live in saltwater.

Saltwater crocs only have that name because in Austrailia they have two major species of croc and one of them lives in freshwater and the other in saltwater. So that's what English speaking Australians named them. Below are all common names of (Crocodylus porosus).

Australian Saltwater Crocodile, Estuarine Crocodile, 'Saltie', Indo-Pacific Crocodile (not generally accepted), Singapore small grain (probably due to resemblance to C. siamensis), Baya, Buaja, Buaya muara, Gator (regional Australian name, not to be confused with A. mississippiensis), Gatta Kimbula, Gorekeya, Kone huala, Jara Kaenumken, Pita Gatteya, Pukpuk (Aboriginal name), Rawing crocodile, Semmukhan Muthlelei, Sea-going crocodile, Subwater crocodile, Man-eating crocodile

I dont understand why people make a vertical video??? So lack of view.
Have they ever thought of why people rather spend money at a cinema to watch a movie than sit their ass at home and watch??? Simple. Because the view is bigger!!!!!!
Lance Clinton
Lance Clinton - 7 years ago
Hey there Britney, thanks for the feedback. I'm a fisherman not a film maker. I was about two miles out on the tip of an island peddling my kayak beside a crocodile with a fishing rod in one hand and a phone in the other. Screen orientation was pretty far down my list of concerns. I ended up with some half ass footage that I loaded on youtube so that a few friends could watch. As it turns out this terrible piece of video has been seen by 100k people, most of whom seem concerned with my misnaming the crocodile and holding the camera the wrong way. I have another video on here where I am about 10 feet from a humpback whale. It is a much better video where I didn't mis-name the whale and I held the camera the right way and only 1,800 people have watched that one. Interesting world we live in huh? Anyway, sorry to disappoint you...your advice is duly noted. :-)

Not a Saltwater Croc if you are in Costa Rica, what you encountered is an American Crocodile. Most crocodiles can tolerate saltwater more than Alligators & Caimans. Crocodiles are the most aggressive of the bunch and would avoid an American crocodile as much as I would a Nile or Saltwater variety

its an American crocodile but they do tolerate salt water just as well as the salt water crocodile. its not the same species as a "salt water croc" but it is in practice one. that's why you see salt water crocs so wide spread as well as the American croc. in their respective areas. I'm sure millions of years ago they were the same species.

Iraq Lobsta!! 45 I have many reptiles but can't believe people have the audacity to let it into the wild. If you're getting a pet, be prepared for how big it'll get. Good news for you, salties are VERY hard to keep as pets so I'm sure you'll be ok.
I live in rural Canada, and they just found a little crocodile in a bog right by my house someone let go because it was their pet and got too big. Like come on people. If you want a crocodilian, do your research first.

ehfoster456
ehfoster456 - 6 years ago
irhungry66 there are not saltwater crocodiles in the americas. There are other croc species, but in Costa Rica there’s only the American crocodile and the spectacled caiman. Crocodiles can swim in fresh, salt, and brackish water, but that doesn’t automatically make them a “saltwater crocodile”. The reason salties have their name is due to their ability to tolerate water with high salinity for a longer period of time than any other croc species.

irhungry66
irhungry66 - 7 years ago
There are definitely salt water crocs in Costa Rica after witnessing a few myself. Crocodiles usually stay within their natural habitat, but that won't stop others from switching locations from time to time. How a saltwater croc can travel from southeastern asia to Costa Rica, I don't know. There have even been reports of Nile crocs in southern Florida even though they are thousands of miles away from Africa. Either these crocs can handle long distance swimming between oceans, or people are bringing these species to new environments in which would considered invasive.
xpat73
xpat73 - 7 years ago
Don't get me wrong. I would not want to come up against any type of croc. I'm just making the point that Salties are apex predators and killers. Many times the victim will never ever see them.

Hopefully not, cause Salties there could endanger not only humans, but also the native crocodile population. At average Salties are bigger and way more agressive plus cannibals who will definitely attack other crocs.

Iraq Lobsta!! 45 - 8 years ago
Yeah but they still kill several people a year. We have them in South Florida too, along with Alligators and Caiman. The Caiman aren't supposed to be there but people get them as pets and let them go in the Everglades when they get too big. I fear someday several people will get salties as pets and let them go in the glades. It would almost be like home for them. Stupid people

+xpat73 Thanks for all the info. I don't really know my taxonomy but these guys are commonly seen in the ocean here. I see them regularly both fishing and surfing. Some of them are quite large...15' plus. This one was off the tip of an island over a mile from shore. I have no information on how dangerous these crocs are compared to others but there are occasional attacks here, some of which occur in the ocean and many of which have been deadly. Regarding your initial comment, I would not likely be dead regardless of what type of croc it was. This lil fella went about 6 feet.
