Sea Kayak Around Ireland - Full Documentary

Winner of Best Sea Kayaking Film - Reel Paddling Film Festival 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sea Kayak Around Ireland is 45 minute documentary the tells the story of 2 Irish Sea Kayakers who take on their dream journey of circumnavigating their country. 2015 will go down, for myself (Jon Hynes) and my paddling partner, Sean Cahill as being one of our most memorable years. We both have enjoyed a lifetime of adventures from a very young age. This has been one of our most satisfying adventures yet. We really hope you enjoy our documentary “Sea Kayak Around Ireland”. It’s been a dream of our to paddle around our own country for many years. In fact we were inspired by many of our kayaking friends who have taken on the journey in the past. Over the year both Sean and I have kayaked all over the world, we’ve had great victories over nature and the elements both on the sea and on the river. Sometimes we fared less well against those elements, however we always maintained a grounded sense and a willingness to learn. With these experiences behind us we embarked upon our dream trip around Ireland in June & July 2015. Not only did the weather and elements test us but our trip was a celebration of life, fitness, adventure and most of all, Irish people. Every day we met people, who were so kind to us, we are forever grateful to each and everyone of you. Hopefully this film in some small way reflects how much that kindness means to us. Ireland truly is, one of the world’s most special places to come and sea kayak. Both Sean and I would to thank the following people and companies. Cian Walsh of Marine User Experience (http://www.mux.ie) for all his hard work, dedication and unending energy to help us bring our story to life in this documentary. We really appreciate every ounce of energy you gave. Much respect. Thanks to Nick Bendon of www.chmarine.com , he came on board our trip plans from a very early stage and supported us with product and publicity. Yak Kayaking equipment kindly supplied us with some really fantastic kit. The Greenburg Buoyancy Aid and Glacier Jacket felt like battle armour when we faced the most challenging of Atlantic sea condtions. http://www.crewsaver.com/yak Craghoppers clothing and Gavin Fox were also very kind to us taking care of all our shore based clothing. Thank you. http://www.craghoppers.com Gavan Murphy of www.globalstar.com kindly supplied us with a Spot Tracker Gen 3 device that was superb in allowing people to monitor and track our progress. Music Annette Buckley Beneath the Big Blue Sea, thank you so much for this beautiful track. Can't wait to take you sea kayaking in Summer 2016. Moby SSDX The Hynes Family, thanks for all your belief in me over the years. A special thanks to my Father, Tony Hynes and my Mother, Hillary Good who gave me the opportunities as a young boy to go kayaking and brought me to the most special place every summer, Roaring Water bay, West Cork. Those childhood experiences have forged a lifetime love of being out on the water. A special thanks to the Cahill family for all their support of Sean and his journey around Ireland. A special thanks to all the volunteers and staff at Coast & Cliff Rescue stations and RNLI stations all around Ireland who let us camp, shower, refresh along the way. Keep up the great work at sea. We’d also like to acknowledge and thank the lads who work 24:7 at the Marine Radio Centre’s at Valentia Island, Malin Head and Dublin. Thanks for watching over us and the weather updates every day. We really do appreciate your great work. A final note, to our wives, your belief in us and un-ending support means so much. Without you, we could not have done this! Thank you. Sea Kayaking Around Ireland is something that can be enjoyed by everyone. Check out http://www.seakayakaroundireland.com for details of all the people who have taken on the challenge. Hello. How does someone kayak around iRELAND and CUBA and HAWAii and JAPAN and MADAGASCAR?
I.E how can I kayak around the world? Kayaks are too big for airlines. Must I buy a kayak everywhere I go? Anyone?
Peter Wolf

Depends a bit on your budget, you can in fact fly there by plane and simply send your kayak there by container ship. Don´t know what it costs, but this is the only alternative way I know apart from buying one every where you want to go.

Excellent! Years ago I read "On Celtic Tides" by Chris Duff and followed his trip on google earth. I was searching for that book title again when I came across this grand voyage. Thanks for producing it. My wife & I watched with joy from the high desert in Arizona. My wife worked on a cruise ship. When they got to Ireland, she decided not to leave the ship because she wanted to put her foot on Irish soil with me by her side...so we'll see you some day. Best wishes!

Jon Hynes Jon Hynes. Thank you very much for your reply, Jon. I am still in the preparation mode you describe. I go out into bigger and bigger wind and waves, but some days, the waves are a so high and curling that it just scares me. I look out to the deep and the waves are even bigger. I imagine being 15 or 20 miles out and being hit by a wild storm and getting into trouble fast. I will keep training and heading into bigger and bigger waves and storms.
Jon Hynes
Jon Hynes - 7 years ago
Hi Mike. We did not mention in the film that I lost a GoPro in Donegal that had over 90 clips of the bigger conditions on the west coast. I shed a tear or two that day! Note to file, ALWAYS leash your GoPro to the deck!

Dealing with the big seas was dealt with in a number of ways.

Firstly we agreed the previous October to do the trip and from that point on I threw myeself into the sea as much as possible that winter in the biggest conditions I could dealing cold, wind, big surf etc. I also used my surf kayak and wave ski at my home beach as possible and that forced so many natural rolling sessions.

Sean was the same. We met up as much as we could in the months prior to the trip.
For example we paddled one day on the mouth of the Shannon and had to cope with 37knot gusts.
We paddled 4 days over Easter on the west coast with some big conditions. So ultimately our confidence was good because we had the evidence we could trust each other, we had our homework done!

The Taran with the weight in it and wing paddles worked so well when thnings got hairy.

There are stil 3 occasions I remember being on the trip where we said to ourselves "We shouldn't be out here" and ordinarily we wouldnt have if it was at home but our goal was the priority and we had to make calculated pushes from time to time.

Thats what it comes down too! Set the goal, get the preparation done, leave nothing to chance and then execute as best you can.

I have thought about longer distance paddling a bit more since and have studied Sea Survival again and perhaps a lifejacket might be a better option than a PFD for someone who is left confident in such remote situations just in case they had to buy as much time as possible while waiting for rescue.

Best wishes for your own paddling.

What challenges did you have with high seas? How did you handle it? That is the one thing that really scares me about long distance sea kayaking is being way out to sea when big waves and storms come pounding in.

Hi Peter. Good question. I bought a Go Pro pole such as this https://shop.gopole.com/products/reach and then sawed off the end and used resin to fix in a male GoPro conector and then stuck the female receiver on the back deck of the kayak. I then rigged 4 black bungee cords mid way up the pole and used plastic spring clips to tension them and connect them to the deck lines and steady the camera. Finally the camera was controlled using the GoPro remote control. All in all a pretty good system, it delivered some good results I think you'll agree. Hope the answer helps? Happy Paddling Peter.

Great to hear you have sailed here on such spectacular coastline. Perhaps by way of clarifying, We had intended on a lot more action footage but I suffered a catastrophic loss of a brand new GoPro 4 with 92 high qualifty clips of the west coast of ireland action. I dropped it overboard during a thunder storm near Malin Head. So, we had to change the angle in which we told our story without that footage. I know some folk might like to have a more technical storywith more stats etc. Almost one year on, the residue from the trip is so positive. Makes me want to go again!

Bottom line.... Always have your GoPro tethered! Lol.

Best wishes to you in Australia.

I learned a lot from this video. The Irish coast is nothing like Norway or Alaska. There is no protecting archipelago and those few places you can go onland are already heavily populated with illegible orange hu-mons. Double Misery. Great film ! Really captures what a challenge it is and the rewards for achieving it :) Having circumnavigated myself in 2014 I really think your advice at the end and enthusiasm for others to "give it a go" is uplifting and your dead right its the people and human kindness which make the adventure so fulfilling .......Congratulations and well done.... great video. what is the advantage of the shape of the blades on your paddle and they sit offset on the end of the shaft?
Jon Hynes
Jon Hynes - 8 years ago
+Joseph Mullin Hey Joseph, so they are called Wing Paddles and work on the same principle of an airplane wing. They are much better for forward speed and generate more lift out of each paddle stroke. They sometimes take a bit more to learn but ultimately deliver better output over long distances. Thanks for watching.

Super inspiring story, guys. I appreciated the emotion, adventure and storyline. Bravo. Well-produced, beautiful, and thoughtful. I also thought it was astute for you to offer the 4 decision factors at the end along with a personal challenge for folks to get out there and pursue adventure. I hope to report back here someday that I have built my own sea kayak and paddled on the Oregon coast.

Jon Hynes
Jon Hynes - 8 years ago
+Stuart Sutherland Hey Stuart. Yes its a dam good piece of kit. Its a heavy duty piece of kit. I particularly liked the collar (Fleece lined!) which worked really well when the weather was cold and miserable. The hood is high vis and helped when we were out in heavy downpours. After many months of heavy use its still going strong and no leaks! Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks, Jon

Men of Steel, on an iron coast. Impressive stuff, the closest we've managed was a complete circumnavigation of Owey Island, ha ha. Couple of questions if you would............Where did you manage to land between Loop Head, and Cliffs of Moher? Also, what were your favourite spots?
Jon Hynes
Jon Hynes - 8 years ago
+GBPaddling Hi and thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed it. So, when we crossed the Shannon we used Kilbaha to overnight and then left for Loop Head the following morning and then on up the coast to Kilkee for lunch and then we stopped at Quilty that evening to meet family who had come to visit. The next day we headed up past the Cliffs of Moher and up through the Aran Islands into the Galway coast.

My favourite spots, well spending the first week on the West Cork & Kerry coasts was spectacular. We loved Inisboffin & Inisturk as always. Donegal is simply stunning and has world class Sea Kayaking. The Rathlin Island & Fair Head day was action packed and thrilling. The last day was truly special as I paddled familiar spots but with the joy of having completed a wonderful adventure.

Let me know if you ever fancy coming over for a paddle and finally.... Happy Christmas. Jon

Phenomenal effort lads. Massive well done. Cutting the wedding ring off cos the hands swelled up, pure drive man.
I have dreamed about doing this for a long time too, I'm wondering what is the first step for someone with minimal kayaking experience? .... and on a student budget....
Any advice at all would be much appreciated.
Jon Hynes
Jon Hynes - 8 years ago
+Anto Duffy Hi Anto. Thanks for your kind message. Any kayaker can do this trip. There are so many variables to contend with when taking on such a journey. Ultimately it is all down to training and preparation. And depending on where your starting from a skills point of view will determine how much training you will have to do. I'd be glad to help you in further detail if you decide to take it on sometime. In the meantime, keep paddling!
