Practicing an assisted rescue in rough water with large waves and fast current. This is a standard sea kayak "T Rescue" performed in real conditions. Due to the size of the waves, the kayak was not completely emptied before re-entry. Instead it was pumped out enough to get to an area of slightly smaller waves where it was pumped out more than paddled out of the rough area completely before final emptying of the kayak. The location is Catumn Rocks area between Watch Hill, RI and Fishers Island, NY. A spring tide ebb with a strong southerly wind. I didn't actually know the camera was on as this was happening so my aim is off during much of the video.

wow a rescue that's not in flat water how hard to find. I see all these demo's on flat water where most would never go over if they were awake in the boat. Thanks.

I'm also way more safety minded now, last trip me and my girlfriend got caught in beteween two islands(6km open waters). And we were way over our heads. 100% focus on not tipping over. Waves bashing us around. Real scary. First thing we did when we reached shore was to hold each other and we said, never paddle in that kind of waters again.

@guillemot12 Yes, I have had that experience also--even getting tangled in the leash myself during reentry. I like to put a spare paddle under my stern bungees, just in case... Great video, very helpful! This is just a wonderful place to paddle, too!!!!!!

this video reminded me of how dumb I've been in the past. I was caught paddling solo in conditions worst than this up the sunshine coast in B.C. a few months back. If I'd bailed out I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to get back in. Step cliffs around a headwater meant that I probably couldn't have made it onto shore. Hopefully next time I'll be smart enough to camp out until it flattens out.
