Sea Kayaking: A Different Kind of Race | National Geographic

Typically, sea kayakers dream of calm waters and soft tailwinds. It's preferable to navigate around waves and whirlpools. A team of young adventure kayakers redraws the sport's horizon by seeking out the sea's most turbulent places, called tidal races, and diving right in. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Some of those waves with no pile at all would not be surfable in a playboat, and others probably not. You also have to factor in that there is a long paddle out to these places.

Hull speed is completely irrelevant once you've caught a wave and are planing, whether it's a playboat or a sea kayak. You're way above hull speed then. It's pretty easy to catch a wave in any sea kayak, including a Capella. Keeping the boat going straight and upright is a whole different story.

I am sure the boat could handle the pounding but I know there are places my Capella's hull speed can't keep up with the water flow. The Exxplorer is a bit better. I know my smaller boats could go through it but surf those long not steep high speed waves. I know my T Slalom couldn't , perhaps a larger flat presentation of a surf built kayak could.

Newfoundlands surfers. Bertgs add an eliment where the ocean bottom can come at you from below, they can split from above, rupture and surge sideways. Then there is the normal stuff, Wind Waves sub zero water temperatures, pointy rocks etc.

Speed... Not sure a play boat would have the hull speed for some of this stuff. Other spots a play boat rules, normal surfing for example.

I'm not sure how far you guys have to go to get to these races, but it seems like a sweet spot for a playboat, using your sea kayak is just making your life hard.

Why on earth would you playboat in a sea kayak? Get a freestyle boat. Sea kayaks are long and keeled for distance.

Been there done that. Try paddling a whitewater boat to some of these places and you'd spend your entire day just getting there. Plus... Why not challenge yourself? Also... When you pop an ender in a 16 foot boat or start throwing ends it's a really cool sensation. Give it a try! If you can control a long boat on the wave short boats become easy.
