A bizarre encounter involving a seal, an octopus and a man has been caught on camera. A kayaker inadvertently got a face full of tentacles while coming between a seal and its lunch in waters off New Zealand. Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island has a large population of fur seals. A seal popped up like while I was waiting to catch a wave in Malibu, many years ago. Scared the hell out of me, since there had been a fatal Great White attack days before. It just stared at me, before diving under and vanishing. The seal reminded me of a huge hairless dog. Much further out, I would see an occasional whale jump. Great times, excellent waves, but very cold water compared to the 85 degree gulf coast surf, that I was used to.
