What about a boyant towable solar array for a high power charge. More drag on the motor is a con but a good design will help.

If you can get yourself a solbian all in one panel it would serve you about 100 times better than that power film.
The power film on it's own is 600g, the charge controller is likely between 250-500g (not sure which one you used) then that frame is maybe 200-300g?
So low end 1050g, high end 1400g on the canopy? Sound about right? Or am I off?
8Jory
8Jory - 5 years ago
They also have smaller ones.
47w 1100mm x 292mm 900g
47w 601mm x 546mm 900g
23w 600mm x 292mm 600g

All with built in mppt

Sorry to keep replying to myself. Trying to get my own solar canoe build going before this summer and these are at the top of my list.
8Jory
8Jory - 5 years ago
72w flexible panel with a built in mppt charge controller is 855mm x 546mm and weighs 1200 grams. They're meant to go on trailers, rvs, and boats anyway so it seems like a natural fit.

You should build a towable battery skiff to tow behind. You should put aluminum tube arced of your motor 2 by. It would support the panel.

@CanadianPrepper I see you're using a beach towel in the back seat for Marshal¿l?. I picked up the Soggy Doggy slip covers for my truck last winter. They have been working great. Canadian product too.

Not sure about you, but where I'm at, it's illegal to have a dog in the vehicle without a harness. I've been using the Kurgo "crash tested" safety harness on both my dogs. Not cheap, but they they work really well. Caveat being that I haven't crash tested them myself. ;-) I don't use the built-in loop like the instruction say though. I use a climbing rated caribiner with a twist lock to clip it onto a loop which is sewn into my seatbelts. Then, the loop is attached to the back of the harness.

The setup works great. Keeps my seats clean, and the dogs contained, even when sopping wet, muddy, etc. Cleanup of the seat covers is as easy as pulling them off, dumping out the schmutz, hosing them down, and hanging to dry

Quick tip, you can rotate the head on that trolling motor so the throttle handle is facing rearward. Much less awkward for this setup. Just remove the screw at the top of the shaft and spin it.

In concept including all of the downhill side this prepper thang is working out good overall I think . One thing You could run with is watching you fettle with sealing methods . Find us a cheep good way of sealing all manor of plastics , ie, adjustable application . You've helped a lot already and now I'm gonna tack one of those Inergy pack sales to your account and want to run it hard . May be add more later as needs or investment dictates going forward instead of back . Thanks All , Thanks be

Check out the Nucanoe line of kayaks. They have a square stern for mounting either a gas outboard, or trolling motor. Also the 12' Frontier model supports 650 lbs weight capacity, the most I've seen on any sit on top or other similar kayak. They are not cheap, but I've had one for about 5+ years and still love it. It's extremely stable too.

Cool stuff! I'm going to share this info with my son who uses a similar kayak now, but has not used his trolling motor with it. The solar panel is a brilliant addition. Even if you cannot keep the battery fully charged, you still can extend your run/fishing time. Good stuff. Thanks. Found your channel recently, and have enjoyed 6-7 of your videos so far.

I did almost the same set up with the minkota 40 and deep cycle battery. It worked but I did not like the weight. And I have a big yak. Between my weight and battery in back I hated the way it would ride. I don’t like the thought of my battery getting wet especially in a plastic boat.
They do make yaks with trolling motors you can drop in. But again battery weight is always an issue.
If your gonna continue to use that set up you need to get that battery up front somehow to distribute the weight in the back.
Im, cool with paddling it’s a good physical activity. Actually if your fishing the trolling motor kind of defeats the whole purpose of a kayak fishing in the first place, which isn’t speed but stealth.

Good day on the water. My only suggestion in terms of exhibiting preparedness on-water is showcasing, recommending, and using a PFD. I did not see you (or dog) wearing any PFD while out boating in this video w/ the exception of the inflatable PFD in the older outtake shots.

Just a concern regarding using a battery with water.. Hopefully you have have the risk of electrocution worked out.
Your posture sucks in that thing but I don't expect its something you spend a lot of time in though.
I hope you don't capsize with no life jacket on you or your dog. All it takes is a bit of rough water or a storm coming in unexpectedly - could see you took in quite a bit of water already.
Good luck and awesome video!

If SHTF what’s going to keep someone from sniping you off that kayak and taking all your stuff? You’re a sitting duck out there. Also, wouldn’t it be better just to hide a cache of rice and beans out in the woods since every unprepared person is going to be out there trying to catch fish with you? And why not fish with nets and fish traps instead of rods?

This just inspired me to attempt a little "project". I have an old pickup with a steel/aluminum flatbed. And I have two identical jon boats. If I build up a box and centerline from the bed, ...just right, mind you, ...those two jon boats might slide in, ...upside down and stern first. Locking in place to form a two piece camper shell/boat carrier.

I haven't eaten in so long.... I can't tell if this is a good idea, or pure stupidity. Lol.

You can use a tire inner tubes to float game across water... We use mainly canoes to do all our moose hunting and that's how we transport them over water four tubes tied to a square frame of 2 inch pvc can float about 1000 pounds and the set up weighs about 50 pounds. We take the valve stems out of the tubes so that they can be filled with a matress inflater quickly and use teflon tape on the caps so no air leaks out... The head, legs and hide go in the canoe with us and the body gets rolled up in an insulated tarp incase it falls off the tube raft it floats
