What are the advantages over scuba? It seems like it is scuba in a drysuit that blocks most of your vision and mobility and adds significant risk.

and it works, at first I thought it was a joke, as it proves to go underwater, is a matter of improvement so it may be available for different purposes, it has great potencial, not just for fun but research it is unbelievable. it is a nice machine, lot of creativity to reach such point of success, of course whoever wants to use it for sure need some training and experience on underwater matters, being in good shape is important,

G'day,

That looks like being a great way to get snagged and stuck underwater, and have to bail out, when the "Shark-Tail" Sweep becomes entangled in Seaweed or old Fishing Lines...; it doesn't appear to be capable of driving the little Unterseeboot backwards, at all.

Just(ifiably ?) sayin' ,

;-p

Drug runners would love this thing. Down low to the surface, human power so no engine noise or heat signature from a hot engine, If the authorities show on the horizon submerge till they go away.
Soulrider2012
Soulrider2012 - 7 years ago
They already have them. It's been on the news before and there are smuggling documentaries on Youtube as well. They have subs that are human powered, engine powered and they have ones that are towed far behind a boat. The towed subs are designed such that if the police show up the subs can be cut loose and they sink. That way the boat towing them has nothing illegal aboard if boarded and searched and they know the position of the sub so hey can come back later and retrieve the cargo/drugs. That is, if the police who are now aware of this type of activity, don't go find the sub first.

Also, part of the problem with running on the surface is they create a wake which can be seen by aircraft.

ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+Pablo Enrique Tirabassi It's a duplication of the earliest submarine designs without the knowledge of pressure on the human body. The pressure on the outside at depth is the same inside the guy's cabin which means he could die from the bends if that's not being monitored and dealt with conservatively during each dive.

After scientists discovered pressure issues, submarines were then built to have the surface pressure in the human cargo sections of the sub to be the same as surface pressure. This meant circular/ball shaped designs to withstand pressures at depth.

ILuvJuly4th From where are you getting that scary information on how dangerous shallow dives are? I just checked the U.S. navy five tables, and they show decompression as not a concern. At 30 feet, you can stay down for well over THREE HOURS without a decompression stop. At 20 feet or less, the tables show no time limit.
There are plenty of dangers anytime someone goes into the water, but when diving at zero to thirty feet, the bends is, thankfully, not one of them.

John Newall
John Newall - 7 years ago
I am certified under Naui and so I know the difference between the bends and a lung expansion injury. My point was that if the craft failed at depth and say, started flooding/sinking, the occupant would have to escape rapidly. The tendency would be to hold your breath when you exited the craft. Obviously if you did this you would be holding compressed air in your lungs and swimming to surface under those conditions could prove fatal.
Adrian J Nyaoi

In the hand of someone who do not understand the physic of scuba diving, this toy is a sinking coffin. ILuvJuly4th is right.
DL
DL - 7 years ago
John Newall:
"Lung expansion injury" isn't what is meant by decompression sickness. I'll spare you the lesson here but it's worth looking up. I'll bet that the (paddler? pilot? Jurgen Prochnow?) also has to equalize.

Also, there enough protocols and backups should one's "regulator pack it up at depth". Every single person with a PADI card has demonstrated underwater that they can at least swap regs, clear their mask, and buddy breathe.
John Newall
John Newall - 7 years ago
Although the bends may be possible, I kind of doubt that a lung expansion injury is likely since holding ones breath during an ascent, assuming that you are all in one pieces inside the hull. I think that breathing normally would be second nature inside the craft. However if there was some sort of catastrophic failure and the occupant had to exit the craft then this injury would be much more likely, just as it's likely if someone's regulator packed up at depth.

DL
DL - 7 years ago
While one could indeed suffer from a decompression illness using this, if he is using PADI rec diving guidelines, he has a dive computer on board that is giving him times for zero-d diving. That means he can ascend immediately to the surface with no ill effects and no deco stops. But then again, despite using carbon fiber for the shell he has 'cheaped out' on the exterior hatches and internal (ballast?) plumbing so my inner cynic doubts there's a computer on board.

The lack of consideration for dealing with internal humidity (you can see it on the windows) suggests he found a lot of things found to be improved on in the MkII model. Humidity has always been a problem in this sort of craft and would be even worse in a human powered craft. A big step would be to breathe through a regulator so the moist exhalations are not released inside the cabin, or to route the dry incoming tank air over the windows to clear them (like a gas mask)

I wonder why the snorkel is venting so much as he's ascending ? I can see it doing that on descent if you don't have a pump to recover ballast air.

+jdmdealers Building an orbiting human cargo space module that launches itself from a 747...but without any radiation shield (not to be confused with a heat shield) is cool too as long as the human cargo doesn't mind having their DNA altered is in the same vein as this "sub".   I'd rather smoke 12 packs of cigarettes a day.

+ILuvJuly4th Interesting, thanks for the info. How long could you stay at 30 feet without problems? Could he carry enough air to stay at 30 feet that long?
ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+Mojave888 +jdmdealers Nope. That is a myth. You can get the bends at any depth if you exceed the time limits. The most dangerous depth in scuba class is between 0 and 30 feet where the atmosphere becomes doubled.

The fact the sub is shaped like a cigar to slice aerodynamically thru the water means it has the potential to have a runaway ascent. You're screwed. Hope there's a decompression chamber nearby.

The human cargo needs to maintain 1 atm at all times. If the submarine engineer cannot maintain that, the license to operate the homemade craft needs to be revoked. This is putting the local fire department at an unnecessary stress for someone without an exhibition permit -- think Evel Knievel stuntman/a parachute stunt, etc.

+ILuvJuly4th- It is very interesting the amount and degree of negative things you are compelled to complain about on this persons working Project Mini Sub Creation. I really do not know what to make of you? With such a vigorous negative approach hindering on pure contempt or sheer jealousy. Maybe it is the engineer in you that cannot stand a creative person without your education being able to produce a cheap affordable working Mini Sub that a big company could never produce. If you require every single detail on this project you should go to the creator himself. I and many other people think this person is a very creative and driven to have made this working Mini Sub no matter how much you disagree. You are just one person. Not many people have this ability to do all the things to get a idea from a dream and make it a reality all by themselves. Even great engineers do not do their own building all by themselves. They depend on other people to assist and finish the job. So, in closing I wish you the best and Seasons Greetings.
ILuvJuly4th

+jdmdealers Pure oxygen is poisonous. Where are you seeing pure oxygen markings on canisters/tanks in the cabin? I saw hoses and gauges but no markings to indicate he was using gases other than just basic compressed air used in regular scuba diving.

By the way, that video looked like more than a 20-25 foot dive.

Usually a strange mixture of gases are used for scuba dives beyond 100 feet...with lots of periodic safety stops along the way back up to the surface.

Just curious where you are getting your information.

His body is still like a 2-liter of soda pop (Coke/Pepsi/Mountain Dew), that is absorbing gases into his tissues to get the bends whether his skin is wet or not.

ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers Low depth is the most dangerous depth while scuba diving. The pressure change is doubled the surface pressure at 33 1/3 feet.

Are you finding/saying you found evidence this sub is using an oxygen mixture as well in the cabin instead of standard compressed air at these shallow depth dives?
jdmdealers
jdmdealers - 8 years ago
+ILuvJuly4th - If you are trying to claim the low depth Sub use with O2 tank in 5' to 20' of water is as dangerous as 50 feet or better?

ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers Most people (including myself) thought the cabin pressure was the same as the surface pressure which is extremely impressive if true...until they stumbled upon the online article that stated the inside pressure was the same as the outside pressure.

You can't base your argument on popular opinion in the latest replies here because ... the pressure issue wasn't revealed. People are being duped. In addition, the viewership here would have to know of its criticalness which would require a prior background in scuba education.

You don't comprehend the bends or a lung expansion injury from scuba diving. Nor do you comprehend how the vast majority of engineers are the real heroes (not this guy) that refused to build a sub like this one that is relatively easy to make. Anyone could have built a sub like this. It's easy to have a proper sealant for controls from the inside cabin to the outside when the pressure will be the same.

If you think this guy is someone extraordinary, you are sadly mistaken. Everyone in the rest of the world can build a sub like this one. It isn't practical and it definitely isn't safe.

With all due respect, you don't comprehend the bends and lung expansion injuries. That, I believe, is the source for your misdirected compassion for this guy.

+ILuvJuly4th- I am not a Submariner or a engineer. But, I do see a rather creative person here using his own working Mini- Sub.  It is refreshing to see someone with this drive, talent, and determination to do a home project like this. Even though it is not a true conventional Sub. Yes, this Personal Mini- Sub Creation has limited uses given it's primitive construction, design, and features. But, the creator still does use his creation and gains enjoyment from it. With all inventions used in different foreign environment there are always risks. This creation is no different than any other as to the dangers that can happen at any time. This video is proof of a successful under water use and is very entertaining to watch. I just see this invention as it is. A wonderful demonstration of the power to imagine & create something useful to enjoy. What is the harm or problem with that?
ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers Prior scuba instruction would have been the red light about atmosphere issues and the danger of this sub. At least with an uncontrolled ascent while scuba diving I can spread my arms and legs out like a snow angel to slow myself down. This guy is a dead duck in a cigar shaped object that dives like a rock and ascends aerodynamically at ease.

+jdmdealers Have you gone through the scuba diving certification process (PADI)?
jdmdealers
jdmdealers - 8 years ago
+ILuvJuly4th- Well, you appear not to understand what I am saying at all. I am not claiming this is a real Mil-Spec Sub in any way. Please listen before the engineer in you screams again at me. This item is simply a very limited depth Sub for personal use only, that was made by one man, on a limited budget, in his spare time, and just for his enjoyment. No team of engineers or wealthy company with investors. Just one man who has done something impressive on his own. This is what makes this project so impressive. It really does not matter if you are not impressed. What matters is it's being used and enjoyed by it's creator.
ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers

I disagree wholeheartedly.

I think most engineers like myself would cancel this project if the surface pressure could not be maintained inside the cabin at all times.

It's a waste of time and money to build a wetless scuba unit (because you have to monitor depth/time there at all times plus have a slow return to the surface) that happens to operate like a submarine.

This is not an engineering marvel.

It's like building and flying an airplane that cannot be controlled on its 3 axis (Wright Brothers competitors).

I don't see methodical problem solving in this video to maintain inherent control and safety in it's creation process by design.

+ILuvJuly4th- There are always new ideas and products to create threw life. I am sure other more great ideas and products will be made in time. It is rather refreshing to see a individuals with a creative mind and the ability to invent and produce something that functions. I see this feat as much more difficult than a regular company with unlimited man power and money. You just do not see many gifted people doing everything to produce their own working product like this one. This is just my humble opinion.
ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers Well, most new inventions will be occurring in a lab nowadays. The basic discoveries have been exhausted. That's probably why you feel the way you do.
jdmdealers
jdmdealers - 8 years ago
+ILuvJuly4th- Well, I agree it is not high tech. But, it did impress me & that is my humble opinion. Not many people design and make their own private transportation products from scratch. It takes a person with drive, talent, and determination. Many traits that seem to be declining.
ILuvJuly4th
ILuvJuly4th - 8 years ago
+jdmdealers

It's not impressive. It's wet-less scuba diving, which means you can get the bends, unlike a real submarine. The pressure in the inner hull is the same as the outside pressure by design. The midsection is not super strong to have the same pressure as the surface pressure.

Nice toy but it eats the gas doesn't it
Maybe a mouthpiece instead of positive pressure in cabin & better pressure resistance the mouthpiece could vent to the cabin then at 2 atmospheres it would vent out so cabin was slightly positive but not wasting so much oxygen but more nitrogen

Light Eye's - 7 years ago
The engine would have to be in it's own water tight compartment with air refilling capability when he surfaces for air. He would then have to be able to close the valve that is for the engine compartment before engaging the process of diving. I would think more time on the surface would be good, but then again their should be a much faster way to replenish Air into the engine compartment and the sub altogether.

Consider it's human powered, and can really dive as deep as scuba divers can, it's promising than those powered shark or dolphin shaped ones that can only dive using reverse lift only in less than a minute. What I really like in submarines is their ability to travel underwater specially when surface water is unstable during a typhoon or a storm or when a hurricane is right above the surface, and subs can safely travel the oceans underneath the surface of the water where it is safer
Fireball Fitness170
Fireball Fitness170 - 9 years ago
+Alan Caldoza Thanks Alan for your input. Nice points on advantage of being beneath the surface in a storm. I wonder how far beneath the surface you would have to be? If not too far, maybe there would be an option to have breather hose to the surface, to wait out a storm. No clue here I am just curious.

This is brilliant.  As long as the air inside the hull is the same as the water pressure outside the hull, nothing blows out or leaks.  Freaking brilliant.

It appears that the extensions fore and aft are to accommodate the ballast tanks so that it has enough buoyancy with the extra weight of the breathing air supply, CO2 scrubber, and the high pressure air for emptying the ballast tanks at the end of the dive. He just needs to flood the ballast tanks to reduce displacement enough to no longer be buoyant. Based on the bubble trail, it's apparent that it's an ambient pressure dry sub (that is, the pressure inside is the same as the pressure outside) so he still has to deal with decompression tables; but the strain on the hull is greatly reduced. You'll notice that it vents a good deal more air when surfacing and this is because it is exhausting the excess internal pressure in order to match the ambient pressure. What I am curious is how many times he can blow the ballast tanks dry to surface before exhausting his high press air tank. I would not be surprised if he keeps a scuba "baby bottle" on board in case he needs to ditch while submerged. I'm also very curious what mechanism he uses to drive the fish tail.

Also, Washington doesn't go after all drug cartels. Only the ones whose leaders refuse to bow down before Washington are hunted. If you want to stop drug trafficking, then you need to start by stopping your govt's role in this trafficking, first. Washington decides which cartels are allowed to operate, and not. There's nothing new about this. CIA, DEA and FBI, plus LAPD and other PD's, have been exposed for their involvement. Big banks profit a lot from the $ laundering. Etc. Big Business!
mikecorbeil
mikecorbeil - 11 years ago
Drug cartels wouldn't be interested in this kind of machine, except, perhaps, for extremely short distances. This is an extremely slow-moving vehicle. You can walk faster, assuming you're not handicapped or in very poor physical condition. But, they might possibly be interested in using this sort of vehicle if it was remotely controllable. Their trafficking might then be detected and stopped, but there wouldn't be anyone who could be immediately arrested, etc.

Very cool, so impressed! ...I'd love to know: Is that air out of a scuba tank, how does he regulate the inflow and outflow so that the chamber does not get pressurized or too saturated in CO2 ? What about decompression? What is that propeller, and how is he powering it? What kinda depths can it handle?
