I have the same yak,but don't stay dry in it due to water splashing in from paddles.Basically it's a decent sit on top for the money(got mine from Tractor Supply $100 less than WalMart or Amazon).Used it three times so far.I put an anchor trolley system on mine.Put styrofoam float on the anchor line in case I need to unhook anchor from boat(use carabiner)I got another seat as the one that comes with it is uncomfortable on my back.You could try either a stadium seat or another kayak seat.Nevertheess,hope you enjoy yourself paddling and fishing.

+Jiamian lin I would not if you are going to go through waves to get there. If its something like the inter-costal than you would probably be ok, just remember the kayak does not bail water.

Where does the water go after you made those 2 drain holes under seat?

Into the hull, you can drain the hull with the drain plug located at that rear

More videos please! I just bought a Bali 12 foot ( same kayak just without the special rod holder) and am planning on installing a larger hatch in the bow, one under the container in the back and a fish finder to the center console. Any thoughts or opinions on this would be appreciated. :)

It doesn't weigh 48lbs either. Its heavier and a bit awkward with no handles to carry.

they are nice kayak's, the weight ratings are a little exagerated, i have an aruba ss, its rated at 395, but at 350 it is pretty much maxed out i wouldn't go beyond that

Salt water is fine, I am in Nova Scotia on the ocean, but, like mentioned, not in choppy waters.....You'll get wet....

No. Without scuppers you would swamp it in choppy water.

Hey Jeremiah, I also live New Jersey and i always go fishing up by the Delaware River, and I was thinking on getting a first kayak to go fishing in Delaware. Since you live you, and go fishing there would this kayak be a good Kayak to go fishing in the Delaware River. Can you please let me know, thank you.

I have thiss yak and love it i am gonna buy the ten foot version also. its great for fishing ponds and lakes. it works good on the yellowstone river in mt for fishing and duck hunting. the only downside that ive found it it does scratch and gouge pretty easy. good vid

I have done shark fishing from kayaks before in the ocean and I would not recommend using this one. When you go through the waves to make your way to the flats you will take on water. I think it would just be safer to use a sit on top kayak that is self bailing and can drain out the extra water. If you still want to try out the journey SS on the ocean, than I would bring a hand bilge pump. I have not filled the cockpit to it's max with water, so I don't know how well it will float under that type of condition. I only have used it on lakes so far, but plan to take a trip down the Delaware river this summer.

Nothing new that I know of, good little yak if you want to stay very dry. There is lots of room to move around, and I have no problem taking stuff out of the back container. I did add a fish finder to it at the end of the season, not that hard, it has a nice space to mount one. I'll try to post another vid of how I carry all my gear, right now we are under about a foot of snow here in Nj :( I can't wait to fish again!!

One more thing, you can not standup in this yak, I tried it in my pool and it was crazy unstable. Try looking at kayaks that are made for that or check out the Jackson Kayak SUPerFISHal paddle board

No, I would not recommend it for the ocean. But I would give it a thumbs up for the intercostal. I would look at a sit on top that is self bailing (scuppers). The Journey 12 SS is more like a mix between a canoe and a kayak. One advantage of not having scupper holes is that you stay very dry, this is great for early spring and late fall up here in Northeast NJ. I have taken it out in some 6" wind chop and it handled very well, the shape of the front forced the water away from the yak and I was dry all day.

I don't mind not having the scuppers, because I stay dry. This will extend my season here in NJ, when the water gets colder. lol The bow forces the water away from the yak and very little ever splashes over and into the boat. I don't think I would use it to blast through waves and take it into the open ocean...but for lakes and inter coastal, some mild rivers, this is just the ticket.

The Journey 12ss is not made for standing. I tried standing in my pool and it was very shaky. That said I love fishing in it, the journey kind of reminders me of a canoe, you sit down so deep and the ride is dry! I just took it out on a mountain lake and the wind was crazy, the chop was around 6" and the yak cut right through it and I stayed dry the whole time. BTW I just installed a fish finder, so I think I will post a vid on that soon.

good info, I am new to kayak fishing and found the journey 12ss on craigslist for 350 so I am doing research on it, wonder if it does well while standing. hope to see more vids on this yak. thanks for the info. FISH ON

Have you taken it out yet? How does it do without scuppers? I hear ya' when you say you wanted a Malibu. I myself was after a Malibu Mini x, but the guy I was going to buy it from decided he didn't want to sell!!! I was pissed because he was asking $350 seat and paddle included. If you know Malibu Kayaks, you know that's a good deal!!! So I ended up settling for a Lifetime Tamarack Angler 120. It was between that, and the yak you have. The deal breaker for me was the scupper hole thing....

I dig it. Your route of how you purchased the Yak as well as the kayak it self, is right up my alley. Pretty much soon I'll be doing the same soon enough. I've seen the 12SS for fair price brand new and used. But I will say, I don't know about that scupper hole situation. Best the luck on the rigging, btw. Tight lines. Sub'd you for the hell of it as well.
