When motoring around in my small dinghy, Ive met off shore swimmers, fishing kayaks, Fising nets/buoys of any kind. They all are "entitled" to at least 1-200 yards clearence - and they are all over the place. My point is - you are not a country out there, and you are not entitled to "your own waters". Noone runs over your line on purpose . Nobody wants to hurt anybody. But everyone has the right to be on the water. Freighters, motor boats, sailboats, swimmers, kayaks - and seals for that matter :)

I would not shed a tear for a dumb ass who got run over by a boat because he did not have a flag. The carelessness in that scenario is not the boater, its the diver or swimmer. If you're in a navigable waterway, swimming or diving with no flag letting boats know you're there, then you deserve some prop scars. There is a reason those flags are the law.

Full throttle and an empty head is a dangerous combination. I've been driven off the water by idiots more than a few times and finally gave up even trying to fish one of my favorite spots on weekends. I do enough stupid things on my own to waste fishing time being angry at other idiots!

Here in Oregon August 2017 Buoy 10 fishing on the Columbia River guy was trolling for salmon the first day out of his two week fishing trip. Along comes an ocean boat and runs right over the boat. All three passengers jumped out of the boat or would of been likely killed. The owner of the ocean boat is also the owner of a nearby resort. Totaled the anglers boat. The owner of the ocean boat supposedly got his lower unit replaced and was back out. Have not heard what happened to the owner of the ocean boat. Totally negligent to run over a boat on the river. Have seen these idiots run right along shore and through the middle of boats.

How about if you go diving and you take a damn flag with you , always have a flag no matter what . Sometimes I go snorkeling about 30 to 40 meters out and I always have a flag trolling me behind .

There are no, no wake signs in a kayak paddling trail in my area. You have to cross a channel, and paddle/peddle quickly to avoid fast, power boats.

I'm just randomly watching fishing videos, and come across this one. I live in Pensacola and go to the beach alot, the best part is going to Pensacola beach at night and go shark fishing, we used to do it all the time, and we're trying to get back into it. You fish from the shore, but kayak the bait out. Good sharks, lots of black tips, an few white tips, and hammerheads, we caught a nine footer off of Pensacola beach about a year or two ago

The Pensacola Snorkel reef is a local snorkeling spot on Pensacola Beach. It is highly frequented by tourists that do not understand "diver down flags." This is a place where people snorkel, swim and paddle board. Most are not aware of the dangers of the area. It is commonly known in our area that there will be people in the water swimming and playing in this spot. It is also on navigational maps. But yes, technically they should have a flag up. This was a calm day and the boater was running the surf line where people were swimming. Hope this explanation helps.

Safety is a two way street. Not familiar with snorkelers and if they are required to, or if there is a reef planing distance for boaters, but I know when my buddies went scuba diving of a boat in Flordia, they always had a dive buoy out. Further, for a kayak pilot I'd be sure to have some type of bright flag off the top of my rods so boat captains can see me. Yeah right of way, etc. until you get split open by some poor guy you are invisible to. YMMV.

Did they have a dive flag up? Something to notify boaters that they're in the water? If not, then its kinda hard to see until you're right on top of them....I look out for divers all the time, including the ignorant ones who don't carry a dive float with flag and I've come close to nailing a few even at slow speeds...so it goes both ways...

You Kayak looks like it's made by Native Craft? I have a Native Craft, but mine is open inside like a canoe but shaped like yours. I have a little electric trolling motor for mine, they make a wooden adapter for the back. I have the interstate deep cell battery all the way forward, me in the middle, and the motor and rain gear ice chest aft compartment. I paddle when I troll to go slow, but i'm 64 years old and the motor allows me more distance without getting really tired.

Hi Yak.. love the channel. I also watch Ty and Teresa.. As a Longtime Floridian (1976) Kayak Fisherman and formerly an avid Scuba Diver i can assure you that Florida Law requires ANYONE in Florida Waters with Snorkel Gear to have a Dive Flag employed and must maintain a Distance from that flag no longer than 300ft. (less in navigational channels and rivers, etc.) Safety on the water is a constant concern and Everyone must do their due diligence. I do appreciate your passionate efforts to warn the boater. However, the captain is in NO WAY IN DANGER of losing any rights on the water if they had no dive flag. Please
keep up the great Vids...Rock On!

But what you can't see due to the limits of a go pro is that the boater was so close to the shore that he was in the swimmers zone . The Pensacola snorkel reef is full of swimmers and snorkelers it is a land mark on the beach that boaters know it is there . I don't not condone anyone to be hit by a boat flag or not. I had a chance to warn a swimmer about to be hit I would do it again whether it's his fault or not. There is no way that boater should be in the surf zone.

Having had two kayaks before and now on my 5th boat, I can tell you that while boating/fishing, it's easy to miss seeing kayaks much less snorkelers/swimmers and that's at slow speeds. The ocean swells sometimes hides small craft like kayaks and low draft boats such as aluminum skiffs. I agree that that captain running at that speed has to be very aware of his surroundings.

I forgot to mention that when I had a kayak, I had a whistle on a lanyard around my neck and also a canned air horn. In fact, I still have that same air horn as a back up on my latest boat.

Like other posters, I have to put the blame on the snorkelers IF they were out beyond any beach boundary buoys or if there were none. Common sense and FL law requires a dive flag. While no one wants to see an accident, if there is no visible warning to the boat captain (buoy or flag) he cannot be held at fault.

+Jim M it is the Pensacola Snorkel reef. That is an artificial county reef for snorkelers . I am surprised the boat didn't hit the concrete pillars. That's why there were no diver down flags . The boater should have known it was there .

Nice video. Try a double shoulder deer drag harness to drag your kayak. Academy has them for less than $10. Works for whatever reason.

Yeah, I have a harness thing that is supposed to be used for shoulder carrying a paddelboard. I put a carabiner at the end and attach to kayak, It helps a lot to put the weight on shoulders/chest. Especially when you have to pull OVER a dune like us Navarre guys do...unlike going THROUGH the dune like the wusses at PB...haha.

We got a ton of careless looney boat owners here in California, that seem to be the majority on the water. Some of them actually go out their way to speed by us yakers to get us to capsize, especially in the Delta.
